Wyatt Park Christian Church on Mitchell Avenue in Saint Joseph, Missouri, is known for two Sunday worship services with distinct music and atmosphere: contemporary worship at 9:15 AM and traditional worship at 10:45 AM. The Sunday gathering is laid-back and welcoming, with space to meet people and find hope and encouragement in the walk with Jesus. The congregation has a history in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and also offers ministry for children, adults, preschoolers, and families, along with local and global mission service.
Contemporary Music and Traditional Hymns
The 9:15 AM service is contemporary, sometimes called the “praise service.” Its praise team uses piano, guitars, and drums to sing a mix of modern songs that might be heard on the radio and familiar hymns refreshed for the congregation.
The 10:45 AM service is traditional. The congregation mostly sings hymns and other well-known songs, with piano or organ accompaniment. Both services include responsive readings and prayers, special music, soloist performances, the bell choir, and liturgical dancers. At the center of each service, everyone is invited to “come to the Table” for bread and cup in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice. The Table is open to all who have faith and confess Jesus is Lord.
Visitors do not need to know the songs. Lyrics appear on the screen, and listeners are welcome simply to listen. Each week includes prayer for the church and community, a 20- to 30-minute Bible message, and time to respond to God’s Word and Spirit. The church also recites the Lord’s Prayer using the “debt/debtors” wording and celebrates the Lord’s Supper weekly.
Parking, Entrances, and a Cup of Coffee
The west parking lot is the primary lot and entrance. It is handicap accessible, and a greeter is stationed at the doors to welcome visitors and answer questions. Inside, the Social Hall is to the left, with coffee, tea, and doughnuts, while a ramp leads to the sanctuary on the right.
On the south side of the building, the Circle Drive Entrance offers a drop-and-go option for anyone who needs easy, direct access to the sanctuary. This entrance is also handicap accessible and staffed by a greeter. A small east parking lot along 27th Street feeds into the circle drive, giving drivers another way to enter.
Nursery and Children’s Time Begin Alongside Worship
The volunteer-staffed nursery serves children from birth through age two during both Sunday services. Background checks are completed for nursery and childcare volunteers, and children are also welcome to remain with their families in the sanctuary. During Children’s Time, children ages two through third grade first worship with their parents and then meet their teachers outside the sanctuary for a lesson based on the sermon. Parents pick them up in the library immediately after the service.
Wednesday nights have childcare by reservation for adults attending Bible study, plus three age-based groups. Halo Club serves Pre-K through second grade, THAT Club serves third through fifth grade, and a junior high group serves sixth through eighth graders with worship, large- and small-group Bible study, and fellowship activities.
Learning and Fellowship Throughout the Week
Adult classes meet at different times so people can find a group that fits their week. Sunday classes include Transformer's Class at 10:30 AM and OK Class at 10:45 AM. Created to Connect meets on the fourth Sunday of the month, and Pursuit gathers young adults on alternating Sunday evenings during the academic year.
- Men’s Bible studies meet Monday at 7:00 PM and Thursday at 8:30 AM.
- Women’s Bible studies meet Tuesday at 10:30 AM and 6:30 PM.
- D6, a ministry night for the whole family, includes a meal at 6:00 PM on the first Wednesday of each month.
The church offers groups for all ages at many different times, and people from many denominational backgrounds are welcome to worship and serve together.
Preschool and Parents’ Day Out
Christian Friends’ Preschool at Wyatt Park serves children ages three through five with sustained Christian education in a caring, stimulating classroom. Activities support social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development, with field trips, special speakers, and weekly chapel led by Children’s Director Tonya Ball. Michelle Vandevort and Heather Knapp direct the preschool program.
Parents’ Day Out gives parents time away while children receive care in a Christian setting. The program serves children ages one through five.
Serving Saint Joseph and the World
Wyatt Park’s local mission life includes CarePortal, which connects children in need with churches that want to help; Inter-serv, which assists seniors, families, youth, and children in Northwest Missouri; and Open Door Food Pantry, which serves more than 250 hot, nutritious meals every day, 365 days a year. The church partners with Hosea Elementary through prayer, mentoring, tutoring, and volunteering. It also participates in Faith in Action, a network of more than 25 Saint Joseph churches, and supports Mid-City Excellence in helping at-risk youth move toward adulthood through academic success, emotional stability, purpose, and value.
Other mission work includes the Disciples Women’s Ministry, Operation Christmas Child, and Jacob’s Toybox. The church packs and ships more than 100 boxes of toys and supplies for children around the world and collects new toys and donations for children at Hosea Elementary.
International partners include Good Shepherd Mission in India, which cares for orphans, operates hospitals, and oversees churches; Fruitful Harvest on Mindanao in the Philippines; and Christian Missionary Fellowship International in West Africa. The church supports these relationships as part of its call to make and grow disciples of Jesus Christ with head, heart, and hands.
Crafting Comfort at Prayerfully Created
The Prayerfully Created ministry makes hats, blankets, shawls, prayer squares, and bookmarks through knitting, crochet, sewing, quilting, and fleece knotting. The makers describe love and prayer as central to each creation, with the aim of carrying Jesus’ love through their hands to those who receive the work. The group meets at 5:00 PM on the first Wednesday of each month and at 10:00 AM on the third Saturday.
Rooted in the Restoration Movement
Wyatt Park is historically part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and rooted in the American Restoration Movement, also called the Stone-Campbell Movement. Its aim is to follow Jesus faithfully, take Scripture seriously, and seek unity in the church. The church confesses the Apostles’ Creed and centers its life on Jesus, the Bible, baptism by immersion, the Lord’s Table, freedom of conscience, honest questions, thoughtful dialogue, and faith expressed through love, service, justice, and compassion.
Its guiding principle is “In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, love.” The congregation describes itself as a family in every sense of the word, committed to loving Jesus with the head, heart, and hands while making room for people from many denominational backgrounds. Wyatt Park Christian Church’s identity is built around worship, growing faith, shared belonging, and active service.
