White, Georgia sits in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains, and at the junction of Old Tennessee Highway and Cass-White Road stands Wofford's Cross Roads Baptist Church, a Southern Baptist congregation that has gathered at this crossroads since 1848. The church takes its name from its location and from Thomas Wofford, who donated the original one-acre plot of land on which the first structure was built.
A House That Has Grown Since 1848
From a small original building, the church has grown into a larger sanctuary, a full education wing, and a fellowship hall paired with a fully equipped kitchen. The property still sits at the crossroads that gave the church its name, and the surrounding Bartow County landscape of rolling foothills remains much as it was when the first members met here nearly 180 years ago.
What the Church Teaches
Wofford's Cross Roads Baptist Church teaches that the Bible is the divinely inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of God. The congregation affirms one God eternally existent in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and holds to the deity of Jesus Christ, his virgin birth, his sinless life, his miracles, his vicarious and atoning death through his shed blood, his bodily resurrection, his ascension to the right hand of the Father, and his personal return in power and glory.
Salvation, the church teaches, requires regeneration by the Holy Spirit through repentance from sin and acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit then indwells the believer, enabling a godly life and growth into the image of Christ. Members are described as the body of Christ, of which Jesus is the head, called to glorify God by loving him and making him known to a lost world.
Sunday Mornings and Wednesday Nights
Sunday School begins at 10:00 AM, followed by the worship service at 11:00 AM. A midweek gathering takes place on Wednesday at 7:00 PM, offered both in person and over Zoom so members who cannot drive or who are away from home can still take part.
Coming for the First Time
The church welcomes first-time visitors, returning Christians, and newcomers to the area, and makes a point of saying that no one needs to worry about what to wear: jeans and suits alike appear on Sunday mornings. Time is set aside during the worship service to bring prayer requests before God, and anyone can submit additional requests online through the prayer list page. It is described as a praying church that has seen God work in response to those prayers.
Serving White and the Wider World
The church describes its purpose in three parts: winning lost souls to Christ, serving the needs of the local community, and supporting Southern Baptist causes around the world. The kitchen and fellowship hall are put to use for community meals and gatherings, and the church records its worship services and music on a YouTube channel where past services can be watched from home.
