A Family of Faith on Broad Street
Second Baptist Church stands at 501 West Broad Street in Griffin, Georgia, a Southern Baptist congregation whose motto, Love God. Love People., sets the tone for everything it does. The church introduces itself as a family of faith that seeks to love God and love people for the glory and renown of His name, drawing its calling from Matthew 22:37-39's command to love the Lord with all the heart and to love the neighbor as oneself. From Sunday worship to weekday handcrafts, that two-fold love shapes the life of the church.
Sundays at the Worship Center
Worship begins at 9:30 AM each Sunday in the Worship Center. After the service, at 10:45 AM, the church gathers across the campus for Bible Study Fellowship, when adults dig into Scripture together. The preschool area also opens at 9:30 AM for children from birth through four years, and the Children's Ministry meets at the same hour for kindergarten through fourth grade, so that families can attend worship together before releasing the children to age-appropriate teaching. The Lord's Supper is observed on the first Sunday of each month during the 9:30 AM service, gathering the church around the table Christ set.
Five Biblical Pursuits
The church describes its work through five practices drawn straight from Scripture. Members seek to lead people to a personal relationship with Christ (Matthew 28:19), help believers grow in their relationship with Christ through the teaching of His Word, equip people to lead within the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:11-12), show people the love of Christ by carrying one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2), and share the Good News of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). These five pursuits shape every program on the church calendar, from Sunday school to special events.
Tabitha: Quilts, Crochet, and Service
One of Second Baptist's most distinctive ministries is Tabitha, a sewing and handcrafting group that meets Mondays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Family Life Center. Ladies use their God-given talents in crochet, knitting, sewing, and other handcrafts to produce finished pieces for local and overseas missions. The group has committed to making quilts for the Georgia Baptist Children's Home on Highway 19 South in Zebulon, providing families with something lasting to take when they leave. Tabitha partners with the Christian Women's Center in Griffin to teach sewing skills, and the ministry's biggest current need is a longarm quilting machine that would benefit three nonprofit organizations. No childcare is available at the meetings.
Missions to Children: Camp Faith and Shoeboxes
Camp Faith is a one-day kids' adventure for ages three through fifth grade, hosted right on the church campus. Each fall the foyer fills with Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse; the church's collection deadline falls in mid-November, and members are invited to stop by the foyer to pick up empty boxes and packing information. Together, Camp Faith and the shoebox drive point an entire generation of the church outward, teaching children that their hands and gifts can reach the world.
Second Sundays and JOY Fellowships
On the second Sunday of each month, the church gathers for a Second Sunday Fellowship Meal immediately following worship. A hot lunch with sides and dessert is served, and members are invited simply to show up; no dish to bring. JOY Fellowship gathers older adults for monthly outings such as the October gathering at Maneki Neko Hibachi Sushi House in Zebulon, where members meet for lunch, optional ice cream at a neighboring shop, and a little shopping. The pattern keeps tables and friendships at the center of the church's life.
Holding to the Baptist Faith and Message
Second Baptist holds to the Baptist Faith and Message, the doctrinal statement of the Southern Baptist Convention. The church's stated calling is to lead people to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to help them grow through the teaching of God's Word, and to equip believers to serve within the body of Christ and to share the Gospel in the community, the nation, and the world.
Sermons on the Radio and Online
Sermons from Second Baptist are archived online by month, going back several years, so anyone can catch up on a missed Sunday at any time. Selected messages also air on WKEU Radio at 9:00 AM, extending the teaching beyond the building. The church keeps an active Facebook presence at facebook.com/sbcgriffin, where weekly announcements and event reminders are posted.
Four Ways to Give
The church makes giving simple with four options. Members and friends can place a gift in the offering plate during Sunday worship, give online through the church's Realm giving portal, mail a donation to P.O. Box 708 in Griffin, or text a gift to 73256 by typing SECONDBAPTIST followed by the amount (for example, SECONDBAPTIST 75 to give $75). Gifts support the proclamation of the Gospel in the community, the nation, and the world.
Pastors and Office Hours
Pastor David Hill leads the congregation. Associate Pastor Dan Todd serves alongside him. Ministry Assistants Suzette Byous and Shonda Hately, along with Operations staff member Patti Russell, keep the office running Monday through Thursday from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, closed for lunch. The church sits at 501 West Broad Street in Griffin, with mail directed to P.O. Box 708, Griffin, GA 30224.
