On Fox Hill Road in Hampton, Virginia, Langley Christian Church is known for a community-minded mission expressed through three verbs: Connect, Equip, and Serve. The congregation provides Sunday worship for children and adults, Bible studies and fellowship through the week, and mission work in Hampton Roads and abroad. Its vision is to be the heart of the community by connecting people with God and one another, strengthening disciples who make disciples, and serving one another, the community, and the world.
The Connect, Equip, and Serve Vision
Langley exists to connect people with God and one another, equip disciples to make disciples, and serve one another, the community, and the world. Its key focus is unity through the Word, prayer, and serving, with strengthening families and the community as central aims. The church describes its goals in terms of being salt and light, measured through baptisms, growth, and community impact.
The core values that guide its ministries are:
- Glorifying God and His Kingdom first.
- Honoring Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
- Treating the Bible as final authority.
- Approaching all things through the Spirit in prayer.
- Serving with love, integrity, and excellence as good stewards.
- Doing all things with thanksgiving and joy.
Sunday Mornings on Fox Hill Road
The Sunday rhythm begins at 9:00 a.m. with Sunday School. Coffee and fellowship follow at 10:00 a.m., leading into the 10:30 a.m. worship service. The congregation also gathers at 10:00 for coffee at the Welcome Center in the back of the sanctuary, where water and information are available.
Parking and dress
Parking is available in front of or behind the church. A sidewalk leads to the main entrance under the carport. Dress is casual, and people are invited to wear whatever is comfortable and come as they are. Those attending can take a seat in the sanctuary wherever they feel most comfortable.
What the 10:30 Worship Service Includes
The Praise Team leads worship through a blend of old hymns and contemporary Christian music. Lyrics are projected on the media screens. An offering is taken during the service, but guests are not asked to participate in giving; that part of the service is intended for members and attendees who have committed to joining the ministry.
Communion is celebrated weekly. It is open to everyone who confesses faith in Jesus Christ and has accepted Him as Lord and Savior.
The livestream begins at 10:25 a.m., shortly before worship starts. Members and visitors can watch the livestream and past services on Langley's YouTube channel.
Children, Youth, and Midweek Formation
Families with an infant who becomes unsettled, or who need privacy for nursing, may use the nursery down the hall from the Welcome Center. The church welcomes the noise and activity of children. Toddler and elementary-age children are invited to remain with their families during praise and worship, then join age-level activities and a lesson in Children's Church after Communion. Children in sixth grade and older stay with their parents in the sanctuary for the message. Langley Kids' teachers have background checks and Child Abuse Safety Training.
Youth Group meets on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Its director, Josiah Coburn, and his wife, Alissa, are deeply involved in marriage ministry and seek to center their home and family life on Christ.
Wednesday evenings begin with a fellowship dinner at 6:00 p.m., followed at 7:00 p.m. by separate men's and women's Bible studies. The men's group studies the Word while building trust and friendships, and the women's group emphasizes relationships with Christ through Bible study, prayer, encouragement, and mentorship. Tuesday's Ladies' Crafting Ministry meets from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall, making crafts for families and charities. Other recurring gatherings include Men's Connect and Ladies' Let's Talk at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Friday Coffee at 8:00 a.m.
What Langley Affirms
Langley affirms the Bible as the inerrant Word of God and final authority, written through the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit. God is affirmed as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, sovereign over creation and actively involved in caring for and providing for it.
Jesus Christ is affirmed as God's only Son and humanity's only Savior, fully human and fully divine, conceived by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. He suffered, died, was buried, rose bodily from the dead on the third day, ascended to heaven, and will return to judge the living and the dead. Salvation, understood as the forgiveness of sins, comes only by grace through the blood of Christ. It is received through faith in Christ, repentance, confession, and immersion, although none of those alone assures salvation.
The church also teaches that people, created in God's image, willfully sinned and are lost apart from Christ. The Holy Spirit is active and operative within the triune God, indwelling every Christian. Langley believes in the Church of Jesus Christ, founded on the day of Pentecost and consisting of Christians everywhere, and that elders exercise authority over the local congregation.
Ministry Teams for Worship, Growth, and Service
The Men's Ministry brings men together through activities, shared study of God's Word, mutual trust, and friendship, with the goal of discipling and equipping them in their roles as men of God. The Women's Ministry creates lasting relationships with Christ through the Word, prayer, encouragement, and mentorship.
Langley Kids provides Children's Church for toddlers through fifth grade. The teaching ministry also gives adults opportunities to share Jesus with children and teenagers through teaching or assisting in a training program, with background checks required.
The Worship Ministry includes the Praise Team, which selects songs to prepare hearts for the message and practices during the week and before Sunday School. A Greeters Team welcomes people and staffs the Welcome Center. Other rotating teams serve communion, prepare the elements, pray for the offering, lead congregational prayer, handle slides, sound and cameras, and support both in-person worship and the livestream.
Service continues through the Finance, Building and Grounds, Housekeeping, Lock-Up and Security ministries. Volunteers count offerings after worship, maintain the building and grounds, handle individual cleaning tasks, and secure the main and back buildings after Sunday worship and Wednesday Bible study. Training is offered for technical and ministry roles.
Opening the Door on Hampton Roads
On the first and third Thursdays of each month, Langley opens its doors from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. to distribute bags of food to community families through its partnership with the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. This twice-monthly pantry is a direct expression of the church's desire to serve people experiencing hunger and food insecurity.
Langley also partners with Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodgings and Provisions, better known as H.E.L.P. This nonprofit provides clothing, food, shelter, and medical assistance to people in the Hampton Roads community. Its A Night's Welcome program coordinates rotating shelters with more than 30 churches during the coldest weeks of the year, providing a safe, warm place, hot meals, toiletries, and community for people without stable housing. Langley supports this work through prayer, volunteers, and service.
For the Fox Hill 5K, Langley sponsors the race and provides volunteers, with proceeds going to H.E.L.P. The church also supports THRIVE Peninsula, a volunteer-driven coalition addressing physical, economic, educational, emotional, and spiritual needs through coordinated community resources.
Seeking the Symphony is another community partnership, offering conferences and small groups that encourage people to keep their eyes on Christ through difficult seasons. Alissa and Josiah Coburn help establish this ministry. Langley also connects with Waypoint Church Partners, which strengthens established churches and supports new church planting through leadership training, consultations, small groups, and other resources.
Camp Rudolph and the Kids Outdoor Zone
Camp Rudolph sits in a wooded setting where camps and retreats combine the study of God's Word, fellowship with believers, and recreation. The camp is not limited to children; adults serve as volunteers, attend retreats, help with workdays and repairs, and can receive camp scholarships.
The Kids Outdoor Zone is an outdoor adventure ministry that pairs boys with male mentors to develop outdoor skills, help boys navigate manhood, and encourage a relationship with Jesus. Together, these ministries give Langley's youth and family focus a setting beyond the church building.
Mission Beyond Hampton
Christ's Mission Yucatan and Cuba is an independent mission serving the Yucatan of Mexico and Cuba. Its work includes starting churches, assisting existing congregations, supporting camp and college activities, and facilitating mission teams. Missionaries Craig and Rhonda Gates helped construct the Christian camp at Sotuta, where the camp serves families and provides a weekday training center for the church in Sotuta. They have also assisted evangelical families in Cuba with hopes of future church plants.
Langley supports International Disaster Emergency Service, a Christian nonprofit working in disaster relief, hunger relief, development, medical care, and evangelism around the world. Its support also extends to Pioneer Bible Translators, whose teams translate the Bible, provide literacy evangelism, plant churches, and train workers among peoples without a Bible in their language.
Another mission partner is Reaching the Billion. David and Lynn Poling minister in Hong Kong and Mainland China, work with a local Chinese congregation, and are involved with Chinese Christian Seminary. Their ministry includes short-term trips across the border and support for church workers and house churches in Mainland China.
Long Service and Continuing Leadership
Lead Pastor Derek Robinson grew up near Cincinnati in a preacher's home. Before entering full-time ministry, he worked as a painter and journeyman carpenter and ran a home repair business. He began attending Langley in 2000, became active in youth ministry, and later served as a deacon and elder. Ordained in 2009, he served as youth minister before becoming Lead Minister in 2015 and now serves as Lead Pastor.
Youth Director Josiah Coburn is a lifelong Virginia Peninsula resident whose family began attending Langley in 2022. He has served in marriage ministry for most of his marriage and became Youth Director in August 2024. His ministry emphasizes knowing God himself, not only knowing the Bible and its stories.
Elder Rob Hendrickson was immersed at Langley in 1988 and has served the church since then. Elder Chris Nayadley has been part of Langley since 1980, has held various leadership roles, and serves as chairman of the Elders. These long-serving leaders work alongside a broader team of teachers, worship musicians, children's workers, craftspeople, ushers, technicians, groundskeepers, and mission volunteers.
A Church Building for Worship and Community Use
Langley's building can be requested for ministry and community events. Available spaces include the sanctuary, fellowship hall, kitchen, back building, and grounds, with setup and cleanup time considered as part of each request. The church office responds to building-use requests within two or three business days.
For Langley Christian Church, community mission is not separate from the congregation's life. Connect, Equip, and Serve shape Sunday worship, children's ministry, Bible study, leadership development, the food pantry, camp, local partnerships, and mission work beyond Hampton. That is the continuing identity of the church on Fox Hill Road.
