Hamilton's Lutheran Congregation Since 1843
On South Front Street in Hamilton, Ohio, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church has gathered for worship since 1843, making it one of the oldest Lutheran congregations in Butler County. The church belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, in the Southern Ohio Synod, and continues to hold a traditional Lutheran service week after week. Its motto - "Reaching out with God's love!" - sums up both its long history and its busy present, and a number of families in the congregation travel from neighboring communities to take part in the historic liturgy.
The congregation is currently led by Pastor Patti Eaton, a retired nurse who stepped into ministry during the COVID-19 pandemic when she helped lead worship while the previous pastor and his family had to isolate. As she continued to lead and learn, she came to recognize a new call. She is now working toward ordination through the T.E.E.M. (Theological Education for Emerging Ministries) program, with Pastor John Mittermaier of the Southern Ohio Synod acting as her mentor. Council President Nathaniel Kaelin, a lifelong member and at least the fourth generation of his family to be confirmed at Zion, anchors the lay leadership alongside Vice President Ken Gerold, Treasurer Ron Alcorn, Secretary Julia Hilbert, and council members overseeing property management, group ministries, social concerns, and Christian education.
Sunday Mornings at the Sanctuary
Worship follows a simple, steady weekly rhythm. Sunday school for all ages begins at 9 AM and runs from Labor Day through Memorial Day. The sanctuary service follows at 10 AM, with Holy Communion served at every service. Prayer requests submitted by the congregation are read aloud during the liturgy, and masks are optional for those who attend in person. Visitors who cannot join in person can watch the service livestreamed on Facebook, and recordings of recent services and a Pastor's Prayer video series are available on YouTube.
The building itself is fully ADA accessible, with elevator and ramp access and a wheelchair-accessible sanctuary, so anyone who wants to join can do so comfortably. The church office is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to noon, with afternoon visits available by appointment.
A Music Program with Deep Roots
Music is a defining part of worship at Zion. Music Director Bill Seale is a vocal performance graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music who served on the CCM Preparatory Department voice faculty for decades and directed music at the Presbyterian Church of Wyoming for twenty-five years. At Zion he serves as conductor, pianist, organist, and handbell director, shaping a program that draws on a wide sacred and choral repertoire. His performing background includes solo work in Handel's Messiah, the Brahms and Fauré Requiems, Bach's Christmas Oratorio, and Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, and he has accompanied master classes and recitals across Cincinnati, Florida, Delaware, and Washington, D.C.
Three Partnerships for Feeding Hamilton
Community outreach is central to Zion's identity. The congregation's stated vision is "to be a welcoming place that nurtures all people in Christ's Love & Grace through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which transforms us as we serve God and community." Three ongoing partnerships put that vision into practice each week:
- Open Door Pantry. Zion is a long-standing partner of the Open Door Pantry, which serves and feeds residents of Hamilton.
- Community Meal Center. Together with several local agencies, Zion helps provide healthy meals to guests on Friday nights and every other Saturday at lunchtime, opening its doors to organizations that assist guests while they eat and fellowship.
- Mini Pantry Program. Through a partnership with New Life Mission and its bulk purchasing power, the Mini Pantry Program supplies food to individuals and families across the community.
Zion also periodically hosts a community meal in partnership with a local United Methodist church and gathers for fellowship events throughout the year.
Learning and Small-Group Life
Christian formation at Zion extends well beyond Sunday morning. Sunday school classes meet for all ages before worship during the school year, and the church stays visibly connected to the wider ELCA through the Southern Ohio Synod. Members can subscribe to a weekly email that delivers the Sunday bulletin, weekly announcements, and the monthly Messenger newsletter, keeping the broader congregation in touch with everything happening at Zion.
A range of small groups and fellowship circles gives members regular ways to connect throughout the month:
- Lydia's Ladies
- Women of Zion
- Band of Brothers (men's group)
- Adult Fellowship
- Young at Heart
- A Book Club
Children and youth have their own rhythms through Vacation Bible School and the Lydia's Ladies Youth programs, both organized in cooperation with the congregation's volunteer leaders. The church also marks the start of each school year with a Blessing of the Backpacks and welcomes everyone back in early autumn with Rally Day and an annual God's Work, Our Hands Sunday of service.
Pastoral Care, Giving, and Staying Connected
Anyone can submit a prayer request through the church's prayer page, and the pastor lifts those concerns at the next worship service. For immediate pastoral care or counseling, the Pastoral Care Team can be reached by calling the church office at (513) 863-5774.
Giving is welcomed in two ways: an offering plate passed during the Sunday service, or online through Zion's contribution portal, where members and visitors can set up one-time or recurring gifts to the church's general and specific accounts. The church also keeps its Facebook and YouTube channels active with livestreams, recordings, and community updates for anyone who wants to stay connected between visits.
