About West Metro Church of God

A Pentecostal Family on Kings Highway in Douglasville

West Metro Church of God sits on Kings Highway in Douglasville, Georgia, a Church of God congregation in the Pentecostal tradition. The family-style welcome is the first thing visitors meet: "If you don't have a home church, welcome home." From there the rhythm of the week unfolds, three Sunday gatherings, a Wednesday night service, weekday classes around the campus, and small groups meeting in homes and restaurants across the city.

Sunday Morning: Connectors, Worship, and a Spanish Service

Sunday mornings begin at 9:30am with the West Metro Connectors, small groups that meet before the main service. The Worship Experience gathers at 10:30am in the Worship Center, and the church aims for worship that is "creative, Spirit-filled, inspirational." Baptism Sundays take place during that hour. The service is livestreamed on YouTube, called the "LIFE STREAM," so that members who travel or are at home can still take part.

Right after the morning service, the church opens a 12:30pm Servicio en Español in the Student Center, a parallel Spanish-language service for the Hispanic neighbors of Douglasville. Then at 1:00pm in Room 104, Carolyn McKinney leads the Hebraic Prophecy Class, walking through Scripture with a focus on Bible prophecy and current events.

The Campus: Worship Center, FLC, Bistro, Student Center

The Kings Highway campus is organized around several named spaces. The Worship Center anchors Sunday worship and Wednesday night Bible study. The Family Life Center (FLC) hosts midweek dinners and the West Kids program. The Bistro is the hospitality room used for small groups like the Warrior Group and the Healthy Living nutrition class. The Student Center is home to the Spanish service. Room 104 holds the prophecy class. The Bread of Life Food Pantry distributes from a metal shed adjacent to the FLC on the last Saturday of each month.

Church Office Hours run Monday through Thursday from 9:00am to 4:30pm, with a lunch break from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. A free calendar feed lets visitors add every regular meeting to Google or Outlook, and giving is available online through the church's giving page.

Mission, Vision, and Beliefs

West Metro's stated mission is to glorify God by touching people with Jesus' love for healing and service. The vision supporting that mission names four commitments: Worshipping in ways that are creative, Spirit-filled, and inspirational; Engaging the community, culture, and world; Serving one another as a family; and Training through discipleship that is strategic and Word-centered.

West Metro holds to the Church of God's classical statement of faith. The church affirms the verbal inspiration of the Bible, one God eternally existing in three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost), and that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of the Father, conceived of the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, crucified, buried, and raised from the dead, and now at the Father's right hand as Intercessor. The church teaches that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and that repentance is commanded of God for all and necessary for forgiveness of sins; that justification, regeneration, and the new birth are wrought by faith in the blood of Jesus Christ; and that sanctification subsequent to the new birth comes through faith in the blood of Christ, through the Word, and by the Holy Ghost.

Holiness is God's standard of living for His people. The church teaches baptism with the Holy Ghost subsequent to a clean heart, with speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance as the initial evidence. The church also holds to water baptism by immersion in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; divine healing provided for all in the atonement; the Lord's Supper and washing of the saints' feet; and the premillennial second coming of Jesus, first to resurrect the righteous dead and to catch away the living saints to Him in the air, second to reign on the earth a thousand years.

The Pastoral Team

Lead Pastor Kenneth H. Coomer III brings an unusual story to Douglasville. A combat veteran, missionary, and VA Certified Peer Support Specialist, he is a father of four. He and his wife, Paige, returned in 2021 from the Holy Land mission field, where he served as Principal of the American School in Bethlehem. The Coomers were glad to call Douglasville home. Pastor Kenneth, a Bishop in the Church of God and a graduate of Lee University, has started schools around the world; most recently he helped launch Founders Classical Academy in Douglasville. He has particular effectiveness in supporting veterans and first responders struggling with PTSD, and in helping veterans secure VA disabilities.

Tay and Tracey Chatman serve together as Next Gen Pastors, overseeing youth ministry. Tracey also directs Ladies Ministries. Jason Guyton serves as Productions Pastor and leads West Metro Worship, the church choir that rehearses on Wednesday nights and leads Sunday worship. Dan and Vicki Chamberlain serve as Care Pastors, providing pastoral care and hosting a Douglasville Connector small group in their home.

Dr. Kori Guyton serves as Kids Ministry Director, overseeing West Kids for Pre-K through 5th grade. Marilyn Foster serves as Senior Adult Pastor and leads the Silver Eagles ministry. Sammy Edwards directs Men's Ministry and the monthly Men's Breakfast. Ronnie and Melissa Burns lead Third Verse Ministries (a foster-care and adoption outreach), and Carolyn and Doug McKinney teach the Hebraic Prophecy Class.

West Kids and the Next Generation

West Kids gathers on Wednesday nights at 6:00pm in the Family Life Center. Children in K5 through 5th grade start with Kids Choir, using vocal and dance abilities in worship, and continue with a Bible study from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. Children also serve in ministry on designated Sundays in Big Church. Monthly birthday celebrations bring the West Kids family together in the FLC with Dr. Kori Guyton.

Middle school and high school students join the Next Gen Pastors, Tay and Tracey Chatman, for evenings of food, games, and devotional teaching. Young ladies gather as the "Mary" group to learn how to follow Jesus amid life's distractions, and young men meet for food, fellowship, and study with Pastor Tay.

Wednesday Nights: Dinner, Bible Study, Choir, and Veterans

Wednesday is the second front door of the week. A 5:00pm Wednesday Night Dinner in the FLC starts the evening; families bring a main dish, side, salad, or dessert to share at the West Table. At 6:00pm, the Midweek Bible Study for all adults opens in the Worship Center. That hour is also livestreamed on YouTube.

At the same hour, Kenneth Coomer leads the Warrior Group in The Bistro, an open gathering for veterans and first responders. The group works to address suicide among service members through what they call the Three C's: Claims, Camaraderie, and Christ. The night closes at 7:00pm with West Metro Worship choir rehearsal under Jason Guyton in the Worship Center, preparing music for Sundays and for the Christmas season.

Connectors: Small Groups Around the City

The Connectors are West Metro's small-group network, and they meet in homes, on campus, and around the Douglasville area. Each group has a leader and a flavor.

  • King's Hwy Connector, hosted by Darrin and Cindy Cline in their Douglasville home, meets bi-weekly to invest, learn, and grow in the Holy Spirit.
  • Douglasville Connector, led by Jamie, Dan, and Vicki Chamberlain, meets bi-weekly on Thursdays in their home to study how the Old Testament points to its fulfillment in the New Testament.
  • Healthy Living, led by Janice Crowell and Elaine Grier, meets Tuesdays at 7:00pm in The Bistro for practical teaching on nutrition, food labels, balanced meals, and portion management.
  • Ladies Lunch Bunch meets bi-weekly on Tuesdays at 11:00am at local restaurants for food, fellowship, and prayer.
  • Women of West meets Wednesdays from 7:00pm to 8:00pm in Room 104 for fellowship, Bible study, and occasional craft work, connecting women across ages.
  • Silver Eagles, the senior adult ministry led by Marilyn Foster, gathers for monthly potluck brunches in The Bistro and seasonal outings.
  • Men's Ministry, under Sammy Edwards, gathers monthly for the West Metro Men's Breakfast in The Bistro and a time of service around Douglasville.

Spanish Service and Hebraic Bible Study

At 12:30pm on Sundays, the Student Center holds the Servicio en Español, a full worship gathering for Spanish-speaking neighbors. The service runs weekly.

At 1:00pm in Room 104, Carolyn McKinney teaches the Hebraic Prophecy Class. The class travels through Scripture week by week, exploring Bible prophecy and current events. It is open to anyone interested in following the prophetic arc of the Bible.

Tuesday Prayer, the Warrior Group, and Outreach

Prayer is woven through the week. Intercessory Prayer gathers every Tuesday at 9:30am in the Worship Center to intercede on behalf of the community, the church, families, and more. The simple teaching is that "prayer changes things."

The Warrior Group meets Wednesdays at 6:00pm in The Bistro for veterans and first responders. Led by Lead Pastor Kenneth Coomer, a combat veteran and VA Certified Peer Support Specialist, the group pairs peer connection with practical help through the Three C's: Claims, Camaraderie, and Christ.

On the last Saturday of each month from 10:00am to noon, the Bread of Life Food Pantry distributes food from the metal shed adjacent to the FLC. The church partners with ministries like Maximum Impact Love on community events and supports broader missions through partnerships with organizations such as Operation Compassion and World Vision.

Discipleship Tracks for Every Age

West Metro shapes its teaching around the four commands of Matthew 28:19-20 and Mark 16:15. Adults can study in tracks covering Family, Financial, Topical, Personal Enrichment, Bible, and Prophecy (End-Times) subjects. Student ministries serve high school and middle school, and children's ministries reach upper and lower elementary and preschool. Sunday mornings include Sunday School classes that the church describes as preserving and perpetuating the faith, alongside the main worship service. Wednesday nights are for investigating the faith in weekly classes. Various electives and small-group studies run seasonally or bi-monthly, often in homes.
