A Family of Faith on East 20th Avenue
Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene sits on East 20th Avenue in Spokane Valley, Washington, a few miles east of Spokane. The congregation has been part of the Valley since 1950 and describes itself as "a group of people who have grown into a family of faith" who are "excited to seek, learn, and follow in the example set by Jesus Christ." The church's calling, drawn from Scripture, is summarized in four phrases: Pursue God, Build Faith, Share Truth, and Love All. Those commitments shape everything from the Sunday worship gathering to the preschool classrooms down the hall.
Sundays at 9:30, Then Wednesday Nights at 6:30
The weekly calendar at SPokane Valley Naz is built around two anchor gatherings. Sunday worship begins at 9:30 AM and is offered both in person and online through a Facebook livestream. Children's programming for birth through 5th grade runs at the same hour so that parents can worship without juggling schedules. After the service, Sunday Classes meet at 11:00 AM for all ages, and a youth Bible study for 6th through 12th graders runs from 10:45 to 11:45 AM.
Midweek, the church lights up again at 6:30 PM. Wednesday Groups is the umbrella for adult Grow Groups, the KidsQuest program for kids, nursery care, and the youth group for middle and high schoolers. The office is open Monday through Thursday from 9 to 3:30 and Fridays from 9 to 1, and a weekly e-newsletter called Midweek Connection keeps the wider congregation in the loop between Sundays.
KidsQuest: From Nursery Through 5th Grade
Children's ministry is led by Pastor Tawnya McKinney, who also directs the preschool next door. The goal, in her words, is to "help kids grow in their relationship with God and others" through engaging activities, biblically based learning, and healthy relationships. Sunday mornings provide nursery care for ages 0 to 3, Kid's Church for preschoolers through 5th graders during the 9:30 service, and Sunday Classes for everyone from nursery through 5th grade from 11:00 AM to noon.
Wednesday nights add KidsQuest, a separate program that meets from 6:30 to 7:45 PM. KidsQuest is split into two groups: ages 4 through kindergarten, and 1st through 5th grade, with nursery care available for the youngest children during the same window. Special family events round out the year, including Vacation Bible School in midsummer, Kids Adventure Camp in late July, Trunk or Treat on the Saturday before Halloween, and Family Skate nights. Families can pre-register and pre-check kids in through the Church Center app to make a first visit smoother.
Teens: Reach, Connect, Grow, Discover, Honor
The youth ministry exists to REACH non-believing students, CONNECT them with other Christians, help them GROW in their faith, challenge them to DISCOVER their ministry, and HONOR God with their lives. Youth Pastor Kaylee Griffin leads a team of four small group leaders: Donna Steigleder and Tanner Griffin for middle schoolers, and Jaryl Weisen and Sean Donahue for high schoolers.
Students in 6th through 12th grade meet on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:00 PM for worship, a message, games, and small-group discussion, and on Sunday mornings from 10:45 to 11:45 for a deeper Bible study. Teen Bible Quizzing adds a separate opportunity to grow in Scripture knowledge alongside other youth from the Northwest District. The ministry is connected to the wider Nazarene Youth International network at the district, national, and international levels, and the church highlights Northwest Nazarene University as a continuing education option for graduates.
Amazing Day Preschool
Sharing the campus is Amazing Day Preschool, a play-to-learn preschool for children ages 3 through 6. The program uses the Creative Curriculum by Teaching Strategies (the same curriculum used by Central Valley School District), supplemented by Learning Without Tears, Heggerty, and ZooPhonics for literacy and math. S.T.E.A.M. activities are a regular part of the hands-on learning, and Bible teaching is built in from Group Publishing and ABC Bible curriculum.
Two classes are offered for the 2026-2027 school year. Early Learners (ages 3 to 4) meets Tuesday through Thursday from 9:30 AM to noon, and Pre-K (ages 4 to 5) meets Monday through Thursday on the same schedule. Annual tuition for Early Learners is $2,618 (or $320 per month across nine months), and Pre-K is $2,963 annually (or $360 per month). A non-refundable registration fee plus a supplies fee applies. Tours can be scheduled through the preschool office.
Adults: Grow Groups, Men, Women, and PrimeTime
Adult ministry at SVNC is organized around small groups. Grow Groups are the church's small group ministry, meeting in homes and at the church for Bible study, fellowship, and prayer. Three other adult communities have their own pages: a Women's ministry that hosts casual mornings of conversation and encouragement, a Men's ministry, and a Young Adult group for ages 18 to 30. PrimeTime (tagline: Young at Heart) gathers the church's seniors. A Care Team supports people through difficult seasons, and a Sports Connection group offers a more informal way to build community. Prayer requests can be submitted online, and a Prayer Ministry team lifts them up.
Missions: Spokane Valley and 160 Countries
Through its NMI (Nazarene Missions International) committee, SVNC mobilizes the church for prayer, giving, education, and engaging children and youth in missions. Globally, the congregation supports the wider Church of the Nazarene, which is at work in more than 160 countries through child sponsorship, disaster response, and education. Locally, the church follows the Jeremiah call to "promote the welfare of the city" and invites members to join in showing Jesus to the Spokane Valley community through service opportunities.
