Two Services, Two Sounds on South Broadway
South Suburban Christian Church, known to its members as South Sub, anchors the corner of South Broadway in Littleton, Colorado. The congregation's mission is simple and direct: to bring people to Jesus Christ and together become passionate followers of Him. Sunday mornings are built around that purpose with two very different worship services running back to back.
At 9:00 AM the Contemporary service opens with the South Sub Band leading modern songs in a bright, engaging atmosphere. At 11:00 AM the Traditional service fills the same room with the South Sub Choir, hymns, anthems, and a more reflective tone. Both services run roughly an hour and include heartfelt worship, life-relevant Bible teaching, and engaging media. Both services are also interpreted in American Sign Language. Worshippers who cannot attend in person can join online through Church Online or YouTube at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
What Visitors Should Know Before They Arrive
South Sub asks guests to come as they are, and that includes how they dress. People show up in anything from jeans and t-shirts to business suits, and no one is going to comment on either end of that range. First-time guests are invited to park at any of the building's entrances; greeters and a staffed Welcome Center help direct families to the right place.
Arriving about fifteen minutes early gives time to park, check children into South Sub Kids, and grab a coffee from the cafe before heading into the worship center. Kids are released from the main service during the announcements and walked down to the lower level for their own programming.
Children from infants through sixth grade are cared for at the 9:00 AM contemporary service. A secure check-in and check-out process protects each child, and every leader and volunteer working with kids has had a background check. Fifth and sixth graders have their own Preteen group during the 9:00 AM hour, with additional Preteen Events offered through the year.
Wednesday Nights and the Sojourner Students
Student ministry at South Sub is called Sojourner, a name that captures the ministry's aim of being a family of believers who confidently live like Christ and serve a world that is not their home. Students in seventh through twelfth grade meet in two weekly touchpoints: Sunday mornings during the 9:00 AM service, when they gather in the student room for Bible study and fellowship after worship, and Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 PM for Sojourner Students.
The student director, Kinnon Dodson, oversees Sojourner and partners with parents through recommended resources from Axis, the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, Sean McDowell, Focus on the Family's Christian Counselor Network, and Where Grace Abounds for families navigating sexual and relational struggles. Wednesday night also opens the door to Awesome Adventure, the church's midweek children's program that runs alongside the student gathering.
Brotherhood and Sisterhood
Two adult ministries have shaped life at South Sub for years. Brotherhood is the men's ministry, described in its own mission as serving the Lord, helping others, and leaning on each other. All men, whether members of South Sub or not, are welcomed into the group. Brotherhood gathers monthly for breakfast and Christian fellowship from September through May at 7:30 AM, with featured guest speakers, Santiago burritos, Lamar donuts, and plenty of coffee. Each spring the men head into the hills for an annual retreat built around relationships, fun, and following Jesus. The men keep their hands busy year-round too, picking up furniture donations for Love INC and delivering them to families in need.
South Sub's women's ministry carries the name Sisterhood. Its purpose is to encourage women and their involvement within the church family while establishing and strengthening their relationship with Jesus Christ. The ministry anchors itself in Ephesians 3:16 to 19, praying that women would know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge. Sisterhood gatherings, retreats, and service projects give women ongoing ways to deepen friendships and live out their faith together.
Senior Adults at South Sub
South Sub has long welcomed adults into its senior ministry, offering Sunday School classes that meet on Sunday mornings throughout the year for adults age sixty-five and better. The Senior Adult Ministry partners with the broader congregation to enhance the value of senior adults by guiding them to connect with others.
A long-running favorite is the Lunch and Movie Matinee, generally held on the last Friday of each month. Volunteer hosts put out a simple lunch followed by a film, freshly popped popcorn, candy bars, and soda pop. The gatherings are built around fellowship in a faith-filled environment, erasing boundaries and developing a true appreciation of God's love.
Worship Arts: Choir and Band
Music is one of South Sub's defining gifts. The South Sub Choir is a decades-old community of singers who perform classical, jazz, gospel, praise and worship, and a wide range of other styles for the 11:00 AM service. Singers receive training in technique, musicianship, stylistic interpretation, repertoire, and music history. There is no audition to join, and no formal music background is required. The choir rehearses every Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the choir room under the direction of Dr. Stuart Dameron.
The South Sub Band supports the 9:00 AM contemporary service and is always looking for additional musicians and vocalists. The band describes its goal as eliminating outside distractions and drawing worshipers into a modern style of worship. Anyone interested can attend a rehearsal first to get a feel for the group before committing.
Care Ministry: GriefShare and Recovery
South Sub connects with two partner organizations that support people walking through some of life's hardest moments. GriefShare seminars and support groups meet at the church and include seasonal tracks like Surviving the Holidays, Loss of a Spouse, the GriefShare cycle, and a Candlelight Service of Remembrance.
Alcoholics Anonymous also meets at the church, offering the fellowship of people who share their experience, strength, and hope with one another as they work to recover from alcoholism.
Serving Here, Near, and Far
South Sub organizes mission work into three concentric rings: Here, Near, and Far. Inside the building, volunteers serve as greeters, cafe baristas, Welcome Center hosts, Safety and Security team members, production and tech volunteers, events crew, and leaders in Kids and Students. Background checks are required for anyone working with children or students, and the Safety and Security team provides first aid and other training for volunteers.
In the wider community, South Sub is one of thirty-four area churches partnering with Love INC of Littleton. South Sub provides people and equipment twice a month to pick up furniture donations and deliver them to families in need. Each May, the church partners with Mission Hills Church on a community diaper and wipes drive. Members volunteer with Love INC's transportation program and Renewed Treasures boutique, and have participated in the IMPACT program. The church has also supported North Littleton Promise with food drives, summer camp scholarships, a soccer coach, and Cinco de Mayo celebrations; helped Joy House in Denver with cleaning, monthly meals, and Christmas gift cards for women and children transitioning out of difficult circumstances; and partnered with Mountair Christian Church in Lakewood to supply a community food and clothing pantry through coat and boot drives, food drives, and a July peanut butter and jelly drive.
South Sub hosts quarterly Give Life blood donation drives through Vitalant and welcomes both regulars and newcomers to donate. The church's Love Does group responds to current community needs as they arise, from breakfast treats for hospital maintenance workers during the pandemic to ongoing support for refugee students and their families, including blankets, cleaning supplies, athletic equipment, gift bags, and personal items.
Beyond Colorado, South Sub supports Wetsembekile Ministries, whose name means God is faithful in Siswati, serving the people of Eswatini. The church supports Homes For Hope builds, where groups construct housing that changes the life of a family. The church partners with Casas de Luz along the San Diego and Tijuana border, a ministry committed to transforming individuals, families, and communities through youth empowerment, cross-cultural relationships, leadership development, home and community development, and environmental sustainability. Each year, South Sub supports Operation Christmas Child, contributing shoeboxes and financial gifts through Samaritan's Purse.
Essential Beliefs and Practices
South Sub describes itself as a Gospel-centered congregation. The Bible is the final authority for the church. Members practice baptism by immersion, celebrate the Lord's Supper weekly, and sense God's call to be actively involved in outreach and mission. The church teaches that there is one God existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; that Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, was crucified, and rose from the dead; that the Holy Spirit resides in every person redeemed by God; and that salvation comes only by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
The congregation is also called to live out five core values: Gather, Give, Connect, Serve, and Invite. Those values shape everything from Sunday morning services to the church's partnerships around the world.
Giving and Getting Connected
South Sub makes giving simple. Worshippers can give online through Pushpay, drop a check in the offering on Sunday mornings, mail a check to the church's Littleton address, or text any amount to 877-488-9041 to set up text giving. Those who want to give to a fund not listed online can give to the General Fund and then email the business office to designate the gift. The church can also receive gifts directly through an IRA or as stock.
