Salem Covenant Church in western Duluth
Salem Covenant Church sits at 339 North 59th Avenue West in the western neighborhoods of Duluth, Minnesota, where it has long been known as a congregation that takes the next generation seriously while still making room for the generations that precede them. The church's vision is to be a community of Christ-followers drawing this current generation into an encounter with Jesus Christ, equipping all within the community to share His love and truth with others. The building keeps a traditional feel, but inside the room the music is contemporary, the preaching is conversational, and families with young children are an everyday sight.
Two Sunday services, one program
Sunday mornings at Salem run twice, at 9:00 and 10:45, with both services covering essentially the same material. The earlier hour tends to draw the larger crowd, while the second service offers a slightly quieter room. Between the two, from 10:00 to 11:00, the church sets out coffee and treats so that early arrivers to the second service can linger; newcomers are encouraged to show up around 10:15 if they want to be part of the fellowship.
A typical service opens with a brief welcome and prayer from a staff member, followed by a short video greeting for newcomers, a highlight of an upcoming event, and a few minutes of meet-and-greet time. The worship band then leads three or four songs, blending newer contemporary music with modernized hymns. A 35-minute sermon from Lead Pastor Joe Florestano or a guest speaker follows, with a closing song and dismissal to round things out.
The last Sunday of every month is Communion Sunday, when the bread and cup are passed out together after the sermon with words of direction from the pastor. Communion at Salem is open to anyone who acknowledges Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The last Sunday of each month during the school year is also Family Sunday: rather than being dismissed to their own program, children from age three through grade five stay in the Sanctuary with their families. The nursery remains open for children up to age five, the youth band leads worship, and the children hear a short special message before the main sermon. Activity sheets are handed out for coloring during the service, and kids who complete them can show their work at the door for a small prize.
Parking, entrances, and accessibility
Visitors coming for the first time should know that the main parking lot is behind the church building, reached through the alleyway, with additional spaces across Green Street. Seven spots in the main lot are marked for accessibility. Of the four numbered entrances around the building, only Entry 1, the double doors in the alley, is unlocked during service and business hours. Ushers and the hospitality team help direct families once they arrive.
Kids: Anchored Sunday School
Anchored is Salem's children's ministry for ages three through fifth grade. On Sunday mornings during the school year, children in this age range are dismissed just before the sermon during the 9:00 service for their own lesson time, using crafts, games, and object lessons to build a foundation for following Christ. During the summer, Anchored shifts to meeting every other Wednesday evening instead. A nursery is available during the 9:00 service for infants and toddlers up to age three, and during the 10:45 service for children up to age five.
Safety is taken seriously. Every volunteer working with children is trained under Salem's Safe Place Policy, background-checked, and never alone with a child. Each child receives a printed nametag at check-in, and parents are given a matching security code they must present to pick their child up. Families who prefer to keep their children with them in the Sanctuary can grab activity bags in the rear of the room. Child noises during the service are treated as a normal part of life at Salem, especially on Family Sundays.
Youth: Remedy
Middle and high school students belong to Remedy, where the conviction is simple: "Love is the answer and the remedy to life's struggles, and Jesus is that Love." Remedy meets on Wednesday evenings as part of Salem's midweek rhythm and connects students into a community that walks with them through the ups and downs of adolescence. The ministry maintains its own Instagram and Facebook pages, sells branded merchandise to support its activities, and sends students each summer to Covenant Park Bible Camp, the Evangelical Covenant Church's camp on Covenant Park Road in Mahtowa. Youth Director Christo Möller oversees both Remedy and the worship band.
Young adults on Sunday evenings
Salem's Young Adult ministry meets on Sundays from 5:30 to 7:00 in the Remedy Room, with food and snacks each week and childcare provided. Open to anyone roughly ages 18 to 29, the group describes itself as a consistent and stable community for a stage of life filled with choices and pressure. The format combines a small Bible study with gendered small groups for confession and accountability. Pastor Joe and Megan Florestano help lead the group, and 18-year-olds who have not yet graduated high school are encouraged to finish out their time in Remedy first.
Wednesday nights built around dinner
From September through May, Salem's Wednesday evening rhythm is built around a 5:00 community dinner, with gluten-free options offered every week. At 6:00, programming runs by age group: nursery for ages 0 to 3, Anchored for age 3 through grade 5, Remedy for grades 6 through 12, and Adult Bible Study for ages 18 and up. Activities wrap at 7:30 and the building closes at 8:30. The schedule generally follows the Duluth Public School District calendar, so if there is no school in Duluth that day, there are no Wednesday activities at Salem.
Scouting and outdoor ministries
Salem hosts two nationally chartered outdoor programs for kids. American Heritage Girls Troop MN-1318 is dedicated to building women of integrity through service to God, family, community, and country, with badge work, service projects, leadership opportunities, and outdoor experiences shaped around Christian values and family involvement. Trail Life Troop MN-4110 carries a parallel mission for boys: guiding generations of courageous young men to honor God, lead with integrity, serve others, and experience outdoor adventure. Beyond these, the church also organizes a monthly Church Hike on the second Saturday of every month, meeting at Hartley Nature Center at 10:00 AM, with a carpool leaving Salem at 9:20 for those who want to ride together. Trails are chosen to be friendly to most ages and abilities, and pets are asked to stay home.
Beliefs and the Evangelical Covenant Church
Salem is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC), a multi-ethnic denomination in the United States and Canada founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants that now has ministries on five continents. The ECC values the Bible as the Word of God, the gift of God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ, the call to extend God's love and compassion to a hurting world, and the strength that comes from unity within diversity. The denomination adheres to the affirmations of the Protestant Reformation regarding the Bible and affirms the historic creeds of the Christian Church while insisting that Scripture is the only perfect rule for faith, doctrine, and conduct.
Salem's own doctrinal statement, shaped by the ECC's Affirmations, centers on six convictions. The Bible is the only perfect rule for faith, doctrine, and conduct, and this reliance on Scripture is the reason the church affirms both men and women as ordained ministers and pursues ethnic diversity in its life together. New birth in Christ is the necessary start of the Christian life, with lifelong growth toward maturity. The church commits itself to the whole mission of Jesus: evangelism, Christian formation, and ministries of compassion, mercy, and justice. The church is a fellowship of believers, not an institution; membership is by confession of personal faith in Jesus Christ and is open to all believers. Salem observes baptism and Holy Communion as sacraments commanded by Jesus, practicing both infant and believer baptism and celebrating the priesthood of all believers. The ECC affirms the Trinitarian understanding of one God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and depends on the Holy Spirit for transformation and the gifts that bind the church together as the body of Christ. Finally, the church treasures the freedom Christians have in Christ, expecting to allow one another freedom to differ on matters where the biblical and historical record allows a variety of interpretations.
Missions near and far
Salem supports five missionary families serving around the world. Alex and Melanie Viana serve in Mozambique through Life for Mozambique and have visited Salem in recent years. Katie and Julio Isaza serve in the Covenant Church in Colombia. Doug and Sara Johnson serve with Kids Alive International in Guatemala. Peter and Laurel Olson serve at Black Forest Academy in Kandern, Germany. Evens and Karina Paul serve with the Evangelical Covenant Church in Haiti.
Closer to home, Salem partners with a wide network of Duluth-area ministries. Locally supported work includes Covenant Park Bible Camp in Mahtowa, the Duluth Harbor Rescue Mission, Greater Twin Ports Cru and The Encounter Youth Center, KDNW/KDNI Christian Radio (Life 97.3), the Lake Superior Life Care Center in Superior, Northland Adult and Teen Challenge, Our Place through the Covenant Ability Network of Minnesota, New Hope for Families, the Women's Care Center of Duluth, and Youth for Christ - Head of the Lakes.
Retreats, groups, and life together
Two annual retreats give the congregation a chance to step away together. The Women's Retreat is held at Covenant Park Bible Camp, built around four teaching sessions from Philippians 3 about identity in Christ, with prayer, creative activities, service projects, and time for rest. The Men's Retreat takes place at Adventurous Christians on Bow Lake off the Gunflint Trail, a Covenant ministry in the Boundary Waters region, where men, their sons, and friends spend a weekend in the rustic outdoors with options for hiking, canoeing, the lodge, and a sauna. A weeknight Adult Bible Study meets on Wednesdays during the school year, and the church's small groups ministry uses a separate Small Group Leader handbook to guide its leaders.
New believers, resources, and getting connected
Those just beginning to follow Jesus can pick up a "You Said Yes: 21 Day Guide" from Salem, a downloadable booklet designed to walk new believers through what it means to follow Christ. A second PDF guide walks readers through how to study the Bible. Beyond its own material, Salem points newcomers to additional reading resources through Life.Church and GotQuestions.org. The church also maintains a Steps and Stories video library, a long-running collection of testimonies from members sharing how God has walked with them, including recent stories from Clarence Manz and Danette Kealey.
The staff and pastoral leadership
Lead Pastor Joe Florestano grew up in Duluth and attended Salem as a child. After earning a Master's degree in Theological Studies from the University of Northwestern in St. Paul and finishing a Master of Divinity remotely through Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary in Owensboro, Kentucky, he spent several years teaching math at Superior Middle School before being called by the congregation to full-time ministry at the end of 2025. His first months in the pulpit have included series through Genesis and the Epistles of John.
Christo Möller serves as the Youth and Worship Director. Born in Heidelberg, South Africa, he grew up leading worship for Resash Ministries from age 14 and graduated from Rhema Bible College in 2007. After years of youth ministry, worship team training, and leadership in multiple denominations, he and his wife Natasha moved their family to Duluth in April 2018 to take on the role. He also preaches occasionally in the Sunday rotation, including in the Genesis series. Brandon Marini serves as Office Administrator and Technical Director; originally from Pittsburgh, he moved to Duluth with his wife Katrina in 2012 and was officially hired in 2019.
A working schedule for first-time visitors
Sunday worship runs at 9:00 and 10:45, with coffee between the two. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The church streams its services online for those who cannot attend in person, and giving is available through Salem's online platform. A Connect Card makes it simple to share contact information or sign up for announcements and prayer emails. Visitors planning to attend can also fill out a short form ahead of time so the ushers can be ready to help when they arrive.
