Tucked along North Salem Street in Apex, North Carolina, Salem Baptist Church has been a steady witness for more than 180 years. The congregation still gathers around the same calling that has carried it since the 1840s: to glorify God, to make disciples who pursue Jesus, and to share His story with neighbors, families, and a community that has grown up around its grounds. From a small nineteenth-century meeting house to a multi-building campus serving hundreds each weekend, Salem has remained a Baptist church with a deep sense of place and purpose in western Wake County.
A Mission Rooted in Scripture
Salem's mission statement sits at the center of everything the church does. The staff summarizes it in three movements: glorify God, make disciples who pursue Jesus, and share His story. Each phrase is paired with a Bible text. Glorifying God flows from John 4:23-24 and Luke 10:27, calling the body to worship saturated with the spirit of the Gospel and to love God with heart, soul, strength, and mind. Making disciples is anchored in Matthew 28:19-20, with baptism and ongoing teaching at the center of Christian formation. Sharing His story grows out of Acts 5:42, Romans 15:20, and 1 Peter 3:15, reminding believers that every follower of Jesus is obligated to know and tell how Christ has personally transformed their lives. The church is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and partners with the Raleigh Baptist Association, the International Mission Board, Transworld Radio, and other denominational efforts.
Sundays at Salem: Two Worship Services and a Bible Hour
A typical Sunday at Salem revolves around three gatherings. The morning begins with Traditional Worship at 8:30 AM, followed by Bible Fellowship Groups at 9:45 AM, and then Worship at 11:00 AM, which is also livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person. The 11:00 AM service includes dedicated moments for children: Wee Worship for birth through Pre-K and Children's Worship for kindergarten through fifth grade, both running alongside the adult gathering. The church's livestream page invites online worshipers to text the word "online" to (919) 322-8605 to connect with the staff.
Salem describes its two Sunday services as a way to serve different generations. The 8:30 AM hour carries a traditional feel, while the 11:00 AM service is led by a worship band and praise team. A weekly sermon podcast is available for those who want to catch up later. Visitors who want a guided introduction can sign up through the Plan Your Visit page, which the church uses to walk newcomers through what to expect on a first Sunday.
Bible Fellowship Groups: Classrooms for Every Stage
Salem's small-group ministry is called Bible Fellowship Groups, or BFGs. The name captures the idea that these are not Bible studies alone but fellowships - close communities that study, pray, serve, and do life together. More than a dozen BFGs meet at 9:45 AM on Sundays, organized by life stage and led by lay teachers. The list includes a College and Career class for post-high-school young adults, median adult classes for singles and parents in their thirties, forties, and fifties, an adult class for those in their fifties and sixties, families-with-children classes, a women's class, a men's class, and a senior adult class. Two specialty groups round out the lineup: a Mandarin BFG for Chinese-speaking members and a Caregiver's Refuge that supports parents and family members caring for loved ones with disabilities.
The BFGs meet across the campus in rooms named within Buildings B, C, and D, and the church invites first-time guests to visit more than one class to find a fit. Several classes use Lifeway's Explore the Bible or Gospel Project curricula, taking members through Scripture book by book or topically. There is no registration, no homework requirement, and the church's welcome team will walk anyone to their first classroom.
SalemKids: From Birth Through Fifth Grade
SalemKids is the church's ministry to children from birth through fifth grade. Parents check children in at a SalemKids station, receive a security sticker, and are escorted to age-appropriate rooms. On Sunday mornings at 9:45 AM, children join their own BFGs with games, crafts, singing, and Bible teaching. At 11:00 AM, Wee Worship serves infants through Pre-K, and Children's Worship dismisses K through fifth grade partway through the service for a tailored time of Bible teaching, singing, and games.
On Wednesday evenings during the school year, AWANA clubs meet from 6:15 to 7:45 PM for ages 2 through fifth grade. Before AWANA begins, kids are invited to sit at the Pastor of Children's Ministries' table during the church's weekly Wednesday fellowship dinner, which starts at 5:15 PM. The Pastor of Children's Ministries also publishes a family email newsletter for parents who want ongoing updates and resources.
For families with children who have special needs, the Precious Jewels ministry engages children, teens, and young adults on Sunday mornings. Trained volunteers spend time with participants in crafts, books, puzzles, games, and simple friendship while their parents attend worship. Volunteers are background-checked and equipped for the role. Salem describes Precious Jewels as one of the most beautiful places to serve at the church.
Student Ministry: Middle School Through High School
The Student Ministry serves students in grades 6 through 12. Its aim, in the staff's words, is to produce "fully devoted followers of Jesus equipped to depend on God's grace daily." On Sunday mornings at 9:45 AM, students gather upstairs in Building C for age-specific BFGs that walk through the story of Scripture and connect each passage to the larger arc of God's plan to rescue His people through Jesus. On Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 7:45 PM, students meet in the same space for a high-energy gathering with worship, teaching, and games.
The ministry also takes students on mission trips. Middle and high schoolers alternate between in-state and out-of-state week-long trips, partnering with communities through service projects and disaster relief. A weekly Student Ministry newsletter keeps parents and students informed about upcoming events and teaching series.
Worship Through Music
Music is woven into nearly everything Salem does. The Music Ministry, overseen by the Pastor of Music and Worship, offers five distinct ensembles. The Worship Choir leads the congregation several Sundays each season and rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM; it is open to volunteers without audition. The Children's Choir, for kindergarten through fifth grade, rehearses Sunday evenings at 4:00 PM. The Praise Team, a group of vocalists, leads the 8:30 and 11:00 AM services and rehearses Thursday evenings at 7:15 PM alongside the Worship Band, a team of instrumentalists who serve at the same services and occasional special events. Finally, the Salem Orchestra brings together brass, woodwind, string, and percussion players with at least three years of experience for as-needed rehearsal and worship-leading opportunities.
Men's and Women's Ministries
Salem's Men's Ministry provides year-round Bible studies, discipleship classes, fellowship, and service. Open-court basketball meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:00 to 2:00 PM in the Multi-Purpose Room, with a brief time of prayer and fellowship. R.O.M.E.O. (Retired Old Men Eating Out) gathers Thursdays from 9:00 to 10:00 AM for food and conversation. A Men's Purity Group, an outreach of Inside Out Ministries, meets regularly at Salem for men working through issues of lust, unhealthy relationships, and pornography.
The Women's Ministry is built around three words: intentional, relational, missional. The ministry hosts Bible studies, fellowships, and events that connect women of all ages. A Wednesday night Bible study meets in Building B and walks through Lina Abujamra's study "Through the Desert," exploring God's faithfulness through the wilderness journeys of Abraham, the Israelites, John the Baptist, and Jesus. Women are also invited to a monthly email list for ongoing updates.
Salem Explorers: Senior Adult Life
Salem's senior adults, called the Salem Explorers, are adults sixty and over who share a love of fun, food, fellowship, music, outreach, and travel. The ministry plans day trips to local restaurants and shows, plus overnight excursions to destinations further afield. A six-member rotating committee organizes the calendar. For those who cannot leave home, Salem's Homebound Ministry delivers sermon recordings, devotional materials, and literature, and the Deacon Family Ministry coordinates in-home Communion for shut-ins.
Missions at Home and Around the World
Missions shape a large share of Salem's identity. Locally, the church partners with MissionApex and a constellation of Serving Teams to reach families and youth in surrounding neighborhoods. The Produce Ministry is a thriving co-op that delivers fresh, affordable produce to local communities every other Friday; volunteers help sort and pack, and a small donation from members covers the gap in funding. Raleigh Marketplace Ministries provides weekly Sunday services for the three hundred plus vendors at the Raleigh Flea Market, meeting at 8:15 AM.
Nationally, Salem supports Living Hope Church, a church plant in North Sarasota, Florida, and sends student ministry teams to assist with storm and flood recovery efforts such as rebuilding in Flat Rock after Hurricane Helene. The church also partners with the Southern Baptist Convention's network of more than fifty thousand cooperating churches. Globally, Salem sends family and student mission trips to Panama, India, and Uganda, supports international missionaries, and participates in the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Other partnerships include the International Mission Board and Transworld Radio.
The Salem Hub and Serving Teams
The Salem Hub is the church's online and in-person front door for getting involved. It gathers prayer requests, giving links, small-group sign-ups, and a weekly Wednesday meal registration in one place, alongside announcements for women's, men's, kids, college, senior adult, and missions ministries. Serving Teams are the volunteer backbone of the church. The Welcome Team staffs greeters before and after each Sunday service. SalemKids, Student Ministry, and Precious Jewels all rely on lay volunteers. The Media Team supports audio mixing, projection, videography, photography, and live production across services and special events. No prior experience is required, and the church trains each volunteer in their area of interest.
Weekday Preschool
Beyond Sunday ministry, Salem runs a Weekday Preschool that serves children from toddlers through four-year-olds. The preschool weaves Bible stories and Christian truths into daily activities, balancing structure and flexibility for each age level. The Director has been affiliated with the preschool for twenty-nine years, joining as a parent in 1994 and moving through volunteer, financial, and administrative roles before taking the director's seat in 2011. The preschool operates as a ministry of the church and shares the same campus.
Pastoral Leadership
The pastoral staff is led by Brian Jennings, Senior Pastor. Jennings grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, graduated from Virginia Tech, and earned a Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Before coming to Salem in 2022, he served as Discipleship Pastor at First Baptist Church Woodstock in Georgia and continues to serve as a Camp Pastor for Lifeway's Fuge camps. He preaches and teaches in an expositional manner and is married with three sons.
Jeff Olds serves as Pastor of Music and Worship, bringing decades of musical training and a heart for leading God's people into His presence. Jamie Hyden is the Pastor of Children's Ministries, a Liberty University graduate who has been in ministry since 2004 and continues studies at Bethel Seminary. Mike Cooper, the Pastor of Student Ministries, grew up in Apex, joined the Salem staff in 2017 after years of youth volunteering, and is now pursuing a Master of Divinity at Southeastern. Andrew Osborne directs the church's media work, and Justin Teseniar serves as Worship Leader. Tammy Pressley directs the Weekday Preschool.
