Rose Park Baptist Church at 5560 Buncombe Road in Shreveport, Louisiana, is known for its dedication to excellent preaching, teaching, worship, and discipleship. Three Sunday services and Sunday School are joined by a Wednesday gathering that begins with a fellowship meal, moves into prayer, and ends with worship. Music, children's ministries, student preparation, senior fellowship, and dedicated gatherings for women and men shape life around that rhythm.
Preaching and Discipleship at the Center
Dr. B.J. “Rocky” Maddox has served as pastor since 1985. Raised in Bossier City, Louisiana, he came to faith in 1972 and later earned a Doctor of Ministry from Luther Rice Seminary in 1993. Before joining Rose Park, he worked in full-time evangelism and led more than 570 revival meetings in the United States and overseas. The church defines its work through four connected aims: excellent preaching, teaching, worship, and discipleship.
Three Sundays and Wednesday Night
- Sunday morning: 8:30 a.m. worship, 9:30 a.m. Sunday School, and 10:30 a.m. worship.
- Sunday evening: 6:30 p.m. worship.
- Wednesday evening: a 5:30 p.m. fellowship meal, 6:30 p.m. prayer meeting, and 7:00 p.m. service.
The Wednesday sequence begins with a shared meal before prayer and worship. Services are held in English.
Families with young children have two church-run options. Nursery Ministry is available for children from infancy through age three during Sunday School, all worship services, and some special events. Children's Church offers a fun, age-appropriate worship service for ages three through seven during the Sunday morning worship service.
From Bed Babies Through Sixth Grade
The preschool and children's ministries seek a safe, loving, and Christ-centered environment from bed babies through sixth grade. They partner with parents to build strong spiritual foundations. The AWANA program runs during the school year on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m., combining Scripture learning with activities that strengthen children, parents, and leaders. Monthly family activities, Vacation Bible School, and a children's summer camp are yearly highlights.
Children's Director Diana Duncan joined the staff in 1999 and became full-time in 2005. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Church Careers with a concentration in Children's Ministries from East Texas Baptist University and has also taught Vacation Bible School clinics and Sunday School conferences.
Hymns, Praise Choruses, and Modern Worship Songs
Rose Park's music ministry deliberately blends generations. Congregational singing includes hymns, praise choruses, and modern worship songs, reflecting the conviction that music should appeal to people of all ages. The music ministry has four goals: praising Jesus Christ, proclaiming the Word through song, planting eternal truths in people's lives, and giving members a place to use their talents in service.
Instrumentalists are welcome to help lead weekly worship, and band practice meets on Wednesdays at 7:15 p.m. Occasional groups include a men's quartet and a ladies' ensemble. The handbell choir rehearses at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and plays several times a year. The music ministry also maintains listening files for worship and children's songs.
Camon's Path From Rose Park to Ministry
The student ministry includes Camon, who grew up at Rose Park and serves as a student intern. He has surrendered to the call to preach and pursues a degree in Biblical Studies at East Texas Baptist University.
Young at Heart: Fellowship From Age 50
Rose Park's senior adult ministry is called Young At Heart and includes men and women age 50 and older. The group gathers for fellowship on the third Thursday of each month at 11:00 a.m. Food and fun anchor these meetings, which sometimes feature guest speakers or musical artists. The ministry also participates in associational events.
Game Day happens on two Tuesdays each month at 1:00 p.m. Members play board games, dominoes, and other games. Young At Heart also plans occasional one- or two-day trips and a larger trip about once a year, making shared travel and experiences a regular part of its fellowship.
Rose Park Ladies and Men's Discipleship
Rose Park Ladies meets on the first Monday of every month. Its gatherings include cooking demonstrations, guest speakers, craft events, and ministry or mission opportunities. The ministry also creates room for mothers to share the concerns, care, and stories of daily family life with other women who understand those experiences.
The Men's Ministry is built around the conviction that every man needs to be discipled. Its vision follows outward from the man to his family, church, and community: change begins with a man who is discipled.
What Rose Park Holds True
Rose Park's beliefs begin with the Bible as the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, and the supreme authority in faith and conduct. The church believes in one living and true God existing eternally in three persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is affirmed as God's only begotten Son, with his virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension, perpetual intercession, and personal visible return.
The Holy Spirit convicts the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment, and regenerates, sanctifies, empowers, and indwells believers. Human beings are created in God's image but fall into sin; those who repent, forsake sin, and trust Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit and receive eternal life. Christian conduct should honor God, care for others, practice faithful stewardship, and pursue maturity in Christ.
The church holds to two ordinances: baptism by immersion of the believer in water and the Lord's Supper, instituted by Christ in commemoration of his death. It also affirms the resurrection of the body, final judgment, the eternal felicity of the righteous, the endless suffering of the wicked, and the establishment of Christ's kingdom.
Giving from Gratitude
Rose Park teaches that giving flows from gratitude and love rather than fear of negative consequences. Members can give online through the church's safe and secure giving option.
