A Walk in Newton County
Prospect Church at Oak Hill sits along Highway 212 in southern Newton County, just outside Covington, Georgia. The congregation describes itself as a community of people committed to making a real difference in Newton County and beyond, with the love of Jesus at the center of everything it does. Its stated purpose is to be a place where wounded and hurting souls can find the love of a friend and of Jesus, and its vision is to transform lives, the local community, and the world with the love of Jesus.
What They Believe
Prospect is a Gospel-centered, non-denominational body of believers. The church's statement of faith centers on ten convictions: that God the Father is the creator of the universe and humanity is made in His image; that the death and resurrection of Jesus provide salvation and eternal life for all who repent and believe; that the Holy Spirit fills the believer with power to witness about Jesus; that the gifts and fruit of the Spirit operate in the lives of believers; that God is active in healing the physical, emotional, and spiritual wounds of His children; that the Holy Bible is the inspired Word of God; that daily prayer and Bible reading are the tools God gives to know Him; that the goal of every believer is to do the will of God and become Christ-like in character; that people are stewards of God's provision and should joyfully tithe; and that Jesus will return to receive His Church and judge every person according to their personal relationship with Him.
Sunday Mornings and Wednesday Nights
Sunday begins at 9:30 AM with Sunday School for all ages, followed by the Sunday Worship Service at 10:30 AM. Each service opens with music led by the Worship Team, continues with a teaching rooted in God's Word and relevant to daily life, and includes a collected offering, though giving is always optional. During the message, children are dismissed for Children's Church.
Wednesday brings an equally full rhythm. A Prayer Group meets at 10:30 AM in the Main Church Building, and a daytime Bible Study follows at 11:45 AM. Students gather for dinner at 6:00 PM in the Lockett Family Life Center, with an evening Bible Study held at 6:30 PM and small groups for first-graders through college-age students beginning at 7:00 PM.
Children, Students, and the Family Life Center
Much of Prospect's family ministry centers on the Lockett Family Life Center, a hub for weekly programming and seasonal outreach.
Prospect Kids ministers to children in first through fifth grade, meeting on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in the Family Life Center and holding Children's Church during the Sunday worship service. Classes for infants through fifth grade are offered during the 10:30 AM service in a fun, age-appropriate setting.
Next Level Youth serves students in sixth through twelfth grade. Youth meet in the Family Life Center on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:30 PM for fellowship, worship, and engaging discussion. Students in sixth grade and above join the main worship service on Sunday mornings.
Children's Outreach rounds out the year with seasonal events that welcome more than 500 children from the community: Vacation Bible School in June, a Back-to-School Bash in July, a Fall Festival and Trunk-or-Treat in October, Breakfast with Santa in December, and an Easter Egg Hunt each spring.
Quilts, Yoga, and Fellowships for Every Season
Prospect's adult ministries span a wide spectrum. The Quilting Ministry gathers every Monday at 10:00 AM in the Family Life Center, creating quilts for those in need locally and for mission projects around the world. Christian Yoga, led by instructor Kellie Rainwater, meets on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM and Fridays at 10:00 AM in the Family Life Center. The free sessions are open to members and the community, and participants bring their own mats.
Several ongoing fellowships add regular gatherings to the calendar:
- Men's Fellowship meets on the third Monday of each month at 6:30 PM in the fellowship hall for a meal, prayer, and a guest speaker. It is open to men from the surrounding community.
- Women's Fellowship gathers on the fourth Monday at 6:30 PM at a local restaurant for fellowship and connection over a meal.
- Golden Age Fellowship, for adults 50 and older, meets on the third Friday of each month at 11:00 AM in the fellowship hall.
- Surviving Ladies is a support and fellowship group for widows that meets on the second Thursday of each month in the Family Life Center.
Mission Work Near and Far
Prospect's outreach extends from Covington to countries on multiple continents. Locally, the church supports local orphanages, provides food, clothing, and supplies to families in nearby schools, and responds to urgent needs as they arise. The Jail Ministry sends a dedicated team each month to visit local jails and prisons, offering prayer, encouragement, and the gospel to inmates who are unable to attend regular services.
Globally, Prospect partners with Prospect Ghana and the House of Grace Girls Home in Thailand, both operated by Global Servants, Inc., to provide care, education, and spiritual guidance to children in need. The church also supports missionaries serving in South America, helping to spread the gospel and meet critical needs in underserved communities.
Action Teams: A Place for Every Gift
Members serve through twelve Ministry Action Teams that keep the church running and the community reached. The Nursery Team cares for infants and toddlers during Sunday worship. The Greeter Team welcomes guests at every entry point, and the Usher Team assists with seating, offerings, and communion. The Beautification Team maintains the buildings and campus, and the Sound Team operates the sound booth alongside the Worship Team.
Other teams plan churchwide events (Recreation and Events), provide safety on the grounds (Security), lead outreach projects (Outreach), and care for hospitalized or homebound members by coordinating meals and visits (Care Team). The Core Group Team serves as teachers, leaders, and facilitators for Sunday School and small groups such as Young and Married, Young Adult Life (ages 18 to 30), and The Middle (ages 35 to 55). The Prayer Team gathers each Wednesday at 10:30 AM in the Main Church Building for a dedicated time of prayer.
