NorthEast Christian Church: A Restoration-Movement Congregation Serving the Hamburg Community of Lexington

Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky

NorthEast Christian Church is a non-denominational congregation in the Hamburg area of Lexington, Kentucky, formed in 2000 from the merger of two neighborhood churches and rooted in the Restoration Movement. The church offers contemporary Sunday worship, robust programs for kids, students, and adults, a food pantry, a preschool, and a global missions partnership network.

About Northeast Christian Church

A Church Forged from Two Neighborhood Congregations

On October 14, 2000, two Lexington churches - Northern Heights Christian Church (formerly Maryland Avenue Christian Church) and Eastland Christian Church - merged to form NorthEast Christian Church. The story had actually begun a little earlier. Northern Heights had already purchased ten acres in the Hamburg development, sensing God was leading the congregation toward a new location and a new season of ministry. After the merger, the newly formed NorthEast began meeting in a new multipurpose building at 990 Star Shoot Parkway in November 2001.

What started as a shared vision between two church families grew into a multi-faceted ministry. A children's facility opened in October 2006, and on July 1, 2007, the congregation moved into the Worship Center that anchors the campus today. The buildings were never the story, though. People were the story. Jesus was the story. And God's faithfulness was the story.

Throughout the years, the Hamburg campus has become home to far more than Sunday morning worship. The property has housed church plants, a Congolese congregation, a Christian school called Veritas, a weekday preschool known as The Academy, office space for other ministries, twenty-three global mission partners, and a Food Pantry that has distributed more than 1.5 million pounds of food to neighbors in need across Lexington.

Restoration-Movement Roots, Non-Denominational Identity

NorthEast traces its theological roots to the Restoration Movement, a stream of Christian faith that emerged in the early nineteenth century at Cane Ridge in Paris, Kentucky during the Second Great Awakening. Leaders such as Thomas Campbell, Alexander Campbell, and Barton W. Stone called Christians back to the simplicity of the New Testament church, urging believers to be united around Jesus, follow Scripture, and live out the church's mission together. Those connected to the movement historically identified simply as Christians or Disciples, emphasizing that their primary identity was found in Jesus Christ rather than in any denomination.

That restoration spirit continues to shape NorthEast. On its visit page, the church describes itself as non-denominational, committed to solid biblical teaching and a set of essentials held as foundational to a relationship with God. The list of beliefs, drawn from Matthew, John, Genesis, Acts, Romans, Ephesians, 1 Peter, and other New Testament letters, includes belief in one God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; belief that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the final authority for matters of faith; belief that salvation comes by grace through the blood of Jesus Christ; belief that the biblical pattern for receiving Jesus as Savior involves belief, repentance, confession, and baptism by immersion; belief that God intends marriage to be a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman; and belief that the church is the body and bride of Christ, founded at Pentecost, with elders shepherding the local congregation.

The church's stated mission flows directly from the Great Commission: We exist to Love God, Connect People, and Make Disciples. Every ministry on the campus - from kids to students to missions to prayer - is described as a part of that single pursuit.

Sunday in Lexington: Worship and Sunday School

Sunday mornings at NorthEast are organized around a simple rhythm. Sunday School meets at 9:00 AM, providing Bible-centered classes for adults as well as age-appropriate teaching for children and students. The congregation then gathers for the main worship service at 10:30 AM in the Worship Center.

Worship is led by the NorthEast Worship team, a ministry described in deeply theological terms. Worship, the church teaches, is more than what happens on a Sunday morning - it is a life surrendered to Jesus. The team frames its work around values such as presence over performance, obedience over talent, righteousness over relevance, and Jesus over everything. Their stated objectives include ministering to God first, coming as living offerings, declaring what God has done, preparing the ground of the heart through praise, leading people into God's presence, and ultimately living a life of worship that flows out from the platform into daily life.

The atmosphere is intentionally casual. Visitors are told to come as they are - jeans and a t-shirt fit comfortably alongside Sunday best - and parking is straightforward. As you pull onto the campus, head to the right side up front to find a parking spot labeled "New Here." From there, visitors walk through a landscaped courtyard into the main lobby, where a welcome team is ready to help with next steps. Accessible seating is available for wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, and other needs, and ushers are glad to assist.

NorthEast Kids

NorthEast Kids exists to partner with families and help kids chase Jesus. The ministry serves children from six weeks old through fifth grade and is built around three commitments: safety, fun, and intentionality. Children are checked in through the Church Center app or at the New Families station, and every volunteer working with children has completed a background check.

The preschool floor is divided into two environments. Baby Land, for infants from six weeks until they are walking independently, provides a safe, secure, and loving environment where babies are cared for and prayed over while parents worship. Ark Landing, for children who are walking independently through Pre-K, uses age-appropriate Bible lessons, worship, stationed play, activities, and snacks to introduce young children to the Creator God and to Jesus. The classrooms are decorated with an animal theme that gives the floor its name.

Upstairs on the second floor, The Rock serves Kindergarten through fifth grade. Sunday mornings include games such as "9 square in the air," large-group worship, and grade-specific small groups. Kindergarten through third grade meet in single-grade small groups, while fourth and fifth grade boys and girls meet separately. The children's ministry uses the Hyfi curriculum by Lifeway, designed to reach a generation of kids looking for identity.

Parents can stay connected through a Parent Facebook Group and can speed up their first visit by filling out a First Time Guest form online before they arrive.

NorthEast Students

NorthEast Students is the ministry for middle and high school students. The community gathers on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM for Bible study, then joins the rest of the congregation at 10:30 AM for worship or serves in the children's ministry.

Wednesday nights are the highlight of the week for students. From 6:30 to 8:00 PM, the ministry opens its doors for games, worship, relevant teaching, and small groups. Throughout the year, students also have the opportunity to participate in camps, retreats, special events, and service opportunities. A 26-27 student handbook and calendar are available online, and a new-student registration form is open for families new to the program. Students can also connect through Facebook and Instagram or by emailing the ministry directly.

The Academy Preschool

NorthEast Christian Learning Academy - simply called The Academy - is a state-certified Christian childcare program that operates as part of the church. The Academy offers part-time childcare for children ages eight weeks through Pre-K, with a school day running from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Families can choose between a two-day option on Tuesdays and Thursdays or a four-day option running Monday through Thursday. The school year begins in September and follows the Fayette County Public School system for holiday and weather-related closures. To enroll, a child must reach the required age by August 1, matching the Fayette County cutoff.

Tuition is published by class. Two-day monthly tuition runs from $275 for the older preschool rooms to $300 for the baby room; four-day monthly tuition runs from $550 to $600. A three-day option is available in one room at $412 per month, and households with two or more enrolled children receive a $15 monthly discount. A one-time $100 registration fee is due at registration. Families interested in enrolling can complete a New Student Registration form to be added to the waitlist.

Academy Director Vicki Rainwater leads a sizable teaching staff that includes Assistant Director Tammi Reeves, lead and assistant teachers across each age group from infants through the four-year-old room, and specials teachers in art, music, and physical education. The Academy has its own handbook and calendar published on the church's site.

A House Built on Prayer

NorthEast describes itself as a House of Prayer, with the conviction that everything the church does should be built in and on prayer. The prayer ministry takes several forms throughout the week.

On Sunday mornings at 8:00 AM, a group gathers in the Prayer Room (Room 134) to lift up the church family, leaders, and community before the day begins. Parents in Prayer meets on the first Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM in Room 207, giving moms and dads a place to pray over their kids, families, and schools. On the last Sunday of each month at 6:00 PM, the church gathers for a Monthly Prayer Service in the Worship Center.

NorthEast also participates in a citywide movement called Unceasing Prayer - a 24/7 prayer effort that covers Lexington all year long, with more than thirty local congregations rotating through hours of prayer. NorthEast carries the second Thursday of each month. Anyone who wants to join the prayer effort can connect with the church's prayer groups or follow along with the monthly prayer guides.

Anyone with a prayer request of their own - whether for healing, provision, salvation, or praise - can submit a request through the church's online form or contact the prayer team directly.

Worship and Production: All for Jesus

The NorthEast Production team works behind the scenes to support every Sunday gathering. The team serves in audio, lighting, cameras, and ProPresenter, with the conviction that production is ministry. Their stated values are to encounter God, elevate excellence, remove distractions, and amplify mission - all for Jesus. The church emphasizes that volunteers do not need to be production experts to join; willingness is the primary requirement, and the team will train anyone who wants to serve.

Worship and Production work hand in hand. Both ministries invite people who want to use their gifts in music, vocals, photography, videography, or design to apply through the Church Center app. Auditions or samples of work may be requested, depending on the area of interest.

Men, Women, and Discipleship Pathways

NorthEast Men's Ministry describes its heart with the phrase as iron sharpens iron. The ministry exists to help men discover their strengths as husbands, fathers, brothers, businessmen, and leaders through men's groups, serving opportunities, conferences, and retreats. Whether a man is a college student, a new husband, a single parent, or enjoying the prime of his life, the ministry aims to provide a place to belong and to be sharpened.

NorthEast Women's Ministry exists to lead women to Jesus Christ, to help them become fully devoted followers, to encourage their spiritual growth, and to equip them to respond to God's leading in their lives. The ministry runs women's groups and events and keeps women connected through Facebook and email.

Beyond men and women, the church has built a structured Discipleship Pathway that includes several on-ramps. Sunday School meets at 9:00 AM for adults and provides consistent Bible-centered teaching. Small Groups use a free-market model in which groups can choose from approved marriage studies, Bible studies, Financial Peace, parenting studies, or newly married studies. Groups meet in three trimesters - winter, summer, and fall - with strategic on-ramps and off-ramps so new people can join without feeling like they are interrupting an established group. Equipping Classes go deeper into theology and practical Christian living throughout the year. For those who want a more personal investment, the church is developing opportunities for intentional one-on-one discipleship.

Anyone wanting to learn more about membership can take the START Class, which covers the church's beliefs, mission, and how to be part of what God is doing at NorthEast. The class is the formal pathway to becoming a member, and members commit to leveraging their time, talents, and finances so that more people can know and follow Jesus.

The Food Pantry

The NorthEast Food Pantry is a partnership with God's Pantry Food Bank, serving the east side of Lexington. The pantry is open every Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with closings posted on the food pantry's Facebook page. Items available typically include dairy, breads, meats, fresh vegetables and fruits, and non-perishable goods. Limited hygiene items may also be available, and Spanish translators are often on site.

Volunteers serve in three capacities. Food Pantry Prep volunteers help unload, sort, and stock on Thursdays and Fridays. Food Pantry Hosts serve on Saturday mornings, stocking shelves, assisting guests, and helping with crowd control - children are welcome alongside a parent. Food Pantry Drivers operate a box truck and pallet jack to pick up deliveries. Each Saturday, the pantry serves upward of 140 families.

Food donations can be dropped off on Sunday mornings or during normal church business hours at the West Wing entrance. Monetary donations are also welcomed; the food pantry purchases bulk food from God's Pantry at a significant discount, and donations are tax-deductible through the church, with a donation statement issued each January.

Missions: From Lexington to the World

NorthEast's missions ministry partners with a wide network of organizations, both locally and globally, to spread the gospel. The church supports twenty-three mission partners around the world, in addition to several unnamed partners whose security the church is careful to protect.

Global partners include Amazing Grace in the Philippines, where Pastor Danny leads evangelistic outreach, a feeding program for children and elderly neighbors living near a dump site, ministry among the aged, street evangelism, and pastoral ministry. Cru partners minister among Muslim-background students in Central Asia. Ethnos 360 supports a family that has served in urban and rural Mozambique since 2006, training pastors and equipping believers, and has now relocated to South Africa to serve the African church. SEND International supports a couple church planting in Tokyo, Japan. Pioneer Bible Translators partners with three families in sensitive translation work in Eurasia. Remember the Children ministers to orphans in Romania and, more recently, Tanzania, through Eternal Families. Lemonade International partners with NorthEast to serve the children and families of La Limonada in Guatemala through education, gang prevention, community relief, and sponsorship programs.

Local partners include Assurance for Life, a free medical clinic serving those facing unplanned pregnancies; Bluegrass Christian Camp, which disciples youth and engages families; Christian Student Fellowship, a campus ministry at the University of Kentucky; Church Under the Bridge, a weekly Sunday worship and meal ministry for homeless and marginally-housed neighbors in downtown Lexington; the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Central Kentucky; Generations Church, a church plant in the Pacific Northwest; the Lexington Rescue Mission; Psalm 82:3, which is developing a foster care village in Liberia; and City for the Nations, which connects, unifies, equips, and deploys the church for multiplying disciple-making movements in some of the least-reached places on earth.

Members interested in becoming a mission partner, applying for a missions scholarship for college, or joining a mission trip can complete the corresponding applications online. Financial assistance applications for mission trips are also available.

Serving and Membership

NorthEast runs its ministry on the time and gifts of its members. Serving is organized around four steps: filling out a Ministry Application, completing a background check where required, meeting with a team leader, and trying out a role before committing. Volunteers are scheduled on a rotating basis and serve at least one Sunday a month, with scheduling handled through Planning Center and the Church Center app.

Serving opportunities span the life of the church. Guest Services includes the Sunday Welcome Team, Hospitality Team, Parking Team, Baptism Hosts, Safety Team, Medical Team, Community Event Hosts, and Weekday Lobby Hosts. NorthEast Kids needs Sunday teachers, assistants, and welcome team members. NorthEast Students needs Wednesday small group leaders, Sunday School teachers, and support for special events. The Discipleship Pathway Team includes women's and men's ministry leaders, Sunday School teachers, equipping class teachers, group leaders, and disciple makers. The Creative Arts Ministry includes NorthEast Worship, Production Arts, photography, and videography. The Altar Ministry supports those who respond during worship gatherings. Facilities and Grounds teams care for the campus, and a Security and Medical team keeps events safe.

For those ready to make a deeper commitment, the START Class serves as the gateway to membership. Members commit to following Jesus, being part of the NorthEast family, and intentionally leveraging their time, talents, and finances so that more and more people can know and follow Jesus. Baptism by immersion follows a similar step-by-step pattern, with a Next Steps form and Baptism Class available for anyone ready to publicly declare what Christ has done in their heart.

Planning a Visit

First-time guests are welcomed at 990 Star Shoot Parkway in Lexington's Hamburg area. Sunday School begins at 9:00 AM, followed by worship at 10:30 AM. From the parking lot, follow the signs to the New Here spaces, walk through the courtyard, and step into a lobby where a welcome team will help with anything you need. There is no dress code beyond what feels comfortable, accessible seating is available throughout the Worship Center, and the entire experience is designed to feel easy and low-pressure.

For families, NorthEast Kids serves children from six weeks old through fifth grade on both floors of the children's wing, and pre-check-in is available through the Church Center app. Students are invited to gather for Bible study at 9:00 AM and to join the larger worship gathering at 10:30 AM. Those who want to keep up between visits can subscribe to the sermon archives, follow the church's Facebook and Instagram pages, watch services online, and give online or by text through the Church Center app.

More than two decades after two neighborhood churches joined together in 2000, the people of NorthEast Christian Church continue to gather around the same conviction that has marked the Restoration Movement since Cane Ridge: the Bible is God's Word, Jesus is the center, and the church is called to live out the mission Jesus entrusted to His followers. The story, the church believes, is not finished yet.
