Northampton Bible Church: An Elder-Led, Bible-Centered Congregation in Cuyahoga Falls

Baptist Church in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio

Northampton Bible Church is an elder-led, Bible-centered congregation in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio that has been teaching Scripture and making disciples since 1956. The church offers ministries for children, students, families, and adults, along with small-group life, baptism, and a structured pathway from first visit to leadership development.

About Northampton Baptist Church

Northampton Bible Church gathers every week at 333 W Steels Corners Road on the west side of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Since 1956 the congregation has been teaching the Bible, baptizing believers, and raising up disciples from infancy through the senior years. What began as Northampton Baptist Church grew into a multi-generational church family that now calls itself simply Northampton Bible Church, organized under a team of pastors and lay elders and shaped by the conviction that the Bible is true and that saved people serve people.

The motto above the church's front door reads "Love God. Love People. Make Disciples." That three-fold mission sets the tone for everything from Sunday gatherings to Wednesday-night children's programs to small groups that meet in homes across the greater Akron area. Visitors are welcomed in person and online, sermons are streamed on YouTube, and a steady stream of discipleship resources is available to anyone who wants to grow. A Plan Your Visit form helps guests get connected before they arrive, and giving is available online.

Seven Decades on West Steels Corners Road

Northampton Bible Church traces its roots to 1956, when it was first planted in Cuyahoga Falls as Northampton Baptist Church. Four years later the congregation moved into the building that still stands on West Steels Corners Road, and in 1972 the present auditorium was added. A 1997 east wing expansion gave the church room to grow its ministry to families and students.

Throughout its history the church has been shepherded by only a few senior pastors, a fact the congregation points to as evidence of long-term stability. In 2014 Joe Pryor, who grew up in the church and had previously served as Family Pastor, became the third Senior Pastor. The name change from Northampton Baptist Church to Northampton Bible Church came later, a deliberate shift the leaders say reflects an ongoing commitment to biblical truth and community impact rather than any departure from the church's foundational convictions.

From its earliest days Northampton has emphasized community-focused ministry: prayer groups, Sunday school, and programs for all ages. That same emphasis continues today through ministries for children, students, young adults, families, men, women, and seniors, as well as outreach efforts that reach beyond the church walls.

What Sunday Morning Looks Like

Sunday is the heart of the week at Northampton. The day begins at 8:30 AM with a prayer time, followed at 9:30 AM by Bible classes for every age, and gathers again at 11:00 AM for the main worship service. The full Sunday rhythm is called Gather North, and it is the front door of the church's discipleship pathway.

Worship at the 11:00 service is led by a worship band, with song lyrics projected on the wall so anyone can follow along. The service runs roughly 60 to 75 minutes and includes a sermon that the pastors describe as practical, applicable, and rooted in Scripture. People dress casually. Jeans are common, and shorts, t-shirts, and dress clothes are all equally at home. Coffee and a pastry are available before the service, and arriving 10 to 15 minutes early gives first-time guests time to park, grab a free gift, and settle in.

Guest parking is reserved at the front of the lot, with overflow parking in the back. A greeter meets visitors at the front door. For families with children, the children's ministry team helps with the check-in process at kiosks in the lobby.

NBkids: Birth Through Fifth Grade

Northampton Kids welcomes children from infancy through fifth grade. Every volunteer who serves in NBkids completes a criminal background check and goes through an application process, and backgrounds are rechecked every three years. The ministry meets during both the 9:30 Bible classes and the 11:00 worship service on Sundays, and on Wednesday nights during the school year from 6:15 to 7:45 PM.

On the first visit, families stop at the children's check-in kiosks in the lobby. A team member gathers basic information - parent names, child's name and birthdate, home address, phone number, and any special instructions such as allergies - and walks the family to the child's classroom. A security tag system matches each child with the adult who is authorized to pick them up. If the ministry needs to reach a parent during the service, a volunteer comes to find them personally.

The co-directors of NBkids are Kelly Pryor and Lana Kearns, supported by coordinators who specialize in nursery care, early elementary, elementary, Wednesday-night programming, crafts, and check-in. Age-appropriate classrooms, engaging Bible teaching, and a safe environment are the hallmarks of the program.

NBstudents: Sixth Through Twelfth Grade

NBstudents is built for middle school and high school students in grades six through twelve. The student ministry meets on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 AM for Bible study that walks through books of the Bible, and on Wednesday nights from 6:15 to 7:45 PM for an evening that breaks down into hangout time, large-group teaching, and small groups.

The ministry's mission is to disciple students and walk with them in fellowship so that they feel seen, heard, and understood. NBstudents emphasizes that every student matters and that there are no outsiders. Beyond weekly gatherings, NBstudents hosts events that range from on-site activities to concert outings and summer camps.

The student ministry is currently led by Pastor Jim Souza, who also serves as Next Gen Associate Pastor overseeing children, students, and young adults across the church.

A Statement of Faith Rooted in Scripture

Northampton's Statement of Faith begins with the Bible. The church believes the Old and New Testaments are "verbally inspired of God and inerrant in the original writings," carrying supreme and final authority for what is taught and how the church lives.

God is one God eternally existing in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - co-equal and together as one, a doctrine the church calls the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity who convicts the world of sin, gives life to the believer, and empowers the preaching and teaching of the Gospel.

On Jesus, the church confesses that Christ was begotten of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. The church believes in his bodily resurrection, his ascension into heaven, and his present life there as High Priest and Advocate. On humanity, the church teaches that all human beings are created in God's image, that sin has brought both physical and spiritual death, and that every person who reaches moral responsibility becomes a sinner in thought, word, and deed.

Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone. The Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice, and all who believe in him are justified by his shed blood. Those who receive Christ by faith are born again of the Holy Spirit and become, by God's grace, children of God and heirs of eternal life.

On future things, Northampton looks for "that blessed hope, the personal, premillennial, and imminent return" of Jesus Christ. The church believes in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting conscious suffering of the lost, and the eternal blessedness of the saved. Two ordinances given by the Lord are practiced at the church: baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper.

Two position papers spell out further convictions on baptism and on marriage, divorce, and remarriage. Both are available as downloadable PDFs from the church.

Mission, Vision, and Values

The mission of Northampton Bible Church is three words: Love God. Love People. Make Disciples. The long-term vision is to be a church where all people can come to believe in Jesus as their Savior, belong to him as a disciple, and become more like him through spiritual transformation.

Eight core values undergird that mission:

  • Persistent and Consistent Prayer - prayer is the battleground in every believer's life and the foundation for everything the church does.
  • Welcoming and Authentic Environments - genuine fellowship, transparent relationships, and clear next steps for anyone who walks through the doors.
  • Equipping and Empowering Leadership - raising up leaders who can replace themselves, in keeping with Ephesians 4:12.
  • Transformative Teaching - preaching and teaching for spiritual transformation at every age and life stage, solidly grounded in Scripture and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
  • Ministry Partnerships - partnerships inside and outside the church to further the Gospel locally and around the world.
  • Selflessly Serving - clear paths for every believer to serve the body, one another, the community, and their own spheres of influence.
  • Flexibility and Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit - openness to what God is doing, even if it disrupts what the church already does.
  • Missional Living - living as missionaries and ambassadors for Christ in everyday life, not waiting to gather as a church before serving.

LIFE Groups and Small-Group Community

At the heart of Northampton's small-group ministry is the LIFE Group. LIFE Groups meet at various days and times, often in living rooms across the area, for deeper Bible study, discussion, prayer, and the kind of community that does not always happen on a Sunday morning. Some groups offer childcare.

Beyond the LIFE Groups, the church offers a menu of other regular studies:

  • Prayer & Share - Sundays at 9:30 AM in Room 202, led by Mark Pickett and Mike Milsaps. A discussion-based LIFE Group experience for deeper study, discussion, and application.
  • Ladies Bible Study - the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 to 10:00 AM in the Cafe.
  • Mid-Week Study - Wednesdays at 6:15 PM in the Cafe, led by Jeff Woods and Cindy Farley. Another discussion-based LIFE Group for deeper study, discussion, and application.

The church also offers downloadable discipleship tools: the SOAP Bible-study method worksheet, a Scripture memory chapter listing, a fasting and prayer guide, a prayer-of-the-Bible reference, the Old Testament in 108 Days reading plan, and the New Testament Challenge, an eight-week plan that walks through the New Testament with a downloadable journal.

The True North Pathway: Discover, Align, Lead

Northampton calls its overall discipleship pathway "True North." It is a series of intentional steps designed to move people from a first visit to a fully invested partnership in the life of the church.

Gather North is the starting point. Each Sunday, visitors and members gather to worship Jesus, open God's Word, and refocus on what matters most. Casual, welcoming, and Bible-saturated, Gather North is where guests are greeted, children are checked in, and the sermon is taught.

Discover North comes next. Discover North is a relaxed gathering where newcomers learn about the church's mission, vision, and beliefs. Participants meet leaders, ask questions, and connect with others taking the same step. Discover North introduces the rest of the True North pathway and helps each person figure out the right next move.

Journey North is the spiritual-growth track for those who want to grow deeper in their walk with Christ. Real-Life Discipleship, the heart of this stage, is described by the church as the heartbeat of Northampton and the core of how the congregation grows, builds authentic relationships, and learns to follow Jesus in everyday life. It runs in small groups several times a year.

Align North is the partnership class. Through Align North, attendees learn what it means to become a Partner at Northampton and complete the Partnership Application Form. The full pathway includes profession of faith and baptism, attendance at the Partnership Class, an elder interview, and an affirmation of the church's doctrinal statements.

Lead North is the leadership-development pathway. Lead North offers courses for those who sense God inviting them to influence, shepherd, teach, and build within the church. A Bible Doctrine Course is launching in fall 2026, a preaching course called From Text to Pulpit is in development, and an Apologetics 101 course is being added. Accreditation tracks are available for those pursuing eldership or director (deacon) ministry.

Baptism and Partnership

Baptism at Northampton is for every Christian. The church teaches that it is the public proclamation of faith in Jesus, an outward symbol of an inward change, and a step that follows saving faith rather than a step toward earning salvation. Baptisms are scheduled as part of the Gather North worship services. Interested believers complete a Baptism Application Form.

Partnership at Northampton is the church's term for what many congregations call membership. The Partnership Covenant spells out the commitments Partners make to one another: to walk together in Christian love, to advance the church, to sustain its ordinances and doctrines, to support the ministry financially, to maintain family and private devotions, to seek the salvation of relatives and acquaintances, and to remember one another in prayer. When Partners move away, the covenant encourages them to unite promptly with another Bible-believing church.

Parent and Child Dedication

Parent and Child Dedication is offered on Mother's Day and other times through the year as needed. Parents who dedicate their children agree to four commitments: that they have trusted Jesus as their Savior, that they will walk in obedience to God's Word and seek to be a Christlike example in their home, church, and community, that they will pray for their child and seek opportunities to lead them to faith in Christ, and that they will teach and model obedience to the Lord. A form is provided for those interested in dedicating a child.

An Elder-Led Church

In May 2024, Northampton Bible Church formally transitioned from a board-led model to an elder-led model of governance. The change, voted on overwhelmingly by the congregation, was the culmination of a multi-year process of study, constitutional revision, and elder training that began in 2011.

The team of Elders is now the governing group entrusted with the teaching, protection, leadership, discipline, equipping, and care of the church body, as well as oversight of all ministry, operations, and finances. Within the elder team, Vocational Elders are paid pastors and Lay Elders are volunteers who serve without church compensation.

The current Elders are:

  • Pastor Joe Pryor - Lead Pastor and Elder.
  • Pastor Jim Souza - Next Gen Associate Pastor and Elder.
  • John Fisher - Elder, Facilities Director, and Financial Team.
  • Jeff Woods - Elder.
  • Daniel Zinzow - Elder and LIFE Group Director.

Northampton teaches that Elders must meet the character qualifications laid out in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9, and that the office of Elder is reserved for men, in keeping with the church's reading of 1 Timothy 2:12 and 3:2.

The church also calls its ministry team leaders "Directors." What other churches call deacons, Northampton calls Directors. Directors facilitate ministry through teams and must meet the qualifications for Biblical Deacons in 1 Timothy 3:8-12. Under each Director sit Coordinators, and under Coordinators sit Team Members.

A Constitution and Bylaws document, updated in May 2024, governs the new structure. A seven-week sermon series called Biblical Church Leadership laid the theological foundation for the change and remains available for review.

Reaching Out to Cuyahoga Falls

Outreach at Northampton is led by Jeni Gilbreath. The church's signature community touchpoint is Drive-Thru Donuts, a free donut and coffee giveaway held several Wednesdays a month in the parking lot at 333 W Steels Corners Road. Drive-Thru Donuts collects baby supplies - diapers, wipes, formula, and baby clothes - for Akron Pregnancy Services.

The Family Life ministry walks alongside families through parenting support, marriage enrichment, and seasonal events that reach beyond Sunday morning. Family Life events have included Trunk-N-Treat, Donuts with Dads and Grandads, and an annual Fall Fest. Blessing Bags, Fill the Crib, and Operation Christmas Child collection weeks have been recurring community-outreach rhythms.

Vacation Bible School is a marquee summer outreach, and the church regularly partners with local agencies and ministries through its Outreach and Family Life teams.

Teaching the Whole Bible, One Series at a Time

The sermon archive at Northampton Bible Church holds more than two hundred messages. Series work has ranged across Old Testament narrative, poetry, and prophecy - including Esther, Exodus, and the Psalms - to New Testament epistles such as Colossians, Romans, and Galatians, and to topical series on marriage, freedom, generosity, suffering, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Preaching has also included named series such as Free Indeed, an extended journey through the book of Galatians focused on the truth that salvation is not earned by effort but received by grace. Other series have explored hard questions about the faith, walking with God through hardship, standing firm in identity, generous living, and the meaning of Christmas and Easter. A seven-part Biblical Church Leadership series worked through the theology of eldership and deacons during the congregation's governance transition.

Sermons are posted to YouTube after each Sunday gathering. A printed bulletin with a sermon study guide accompanies each worship service and is available online.

One Rhythm: Engage, Connect, Serve

One of the simplest tools Northampton offers for everyday discipleship is called ONE. It is a weekly rhythm built on three words: Engage, Connect, Serve.

Engage means making it a goal and priority to gather with the church family for worship every week. Worship re-centers the heart, priorities, and identity. Gathering is where believers hear from God's Word, encourage one another, give of their time, talents, and treasure, and remember they belong to something bigger.

Connect means intentionally stepping toward community every week. This might be a LIFE Group, a ministry team, coffee with a friend, or encouraging a newcomer. Walking alone makes growth hard. Connect keeps every believer known, supported, and accountable.

Serve means using God-given gifts to build up the church and bless others. Serving can happen inside the church - welcoming guests, investing in kids, leading students - and outside the church, in everyday relationships and workplaces.

Engage. Connect. Serve. One rhythm, one mission: to love God, love people, and make disciples.

Northampton Bible Church gathers at 333 W Steels Corners Road in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, with Sunday prayer at 8:30 AM, Bible classes at 9:30 AM, and worship at 11:00 AM. Sunday messages are streamed on YouTube, giving is available online, and a Plan Your Visit form helps first-time guests get connected before they arrive.
