Grafton United Methodist Church is at 973 Mechanic Street in Grafton, Ohio, where it is known for prayerful Sunday worship, open communion and a commitment to putting God's Word to work near and far. Organized in March 1871, the congregation continues to adapt its facilities and practices as it carries out that mission.
From Rawsonville's 1871 Beginning
When Grafton was known as Rawsonville, the Methodist church was organized in March 1871 and met in Hart's Hall. That building burned in 1874, and construction began on a new structure that would form the basis of the present facility. Its original sanctuary was dedicated on January 14, 1875. An addition followed in 1894, and the sanctuary was remodeled in 1912. A major expansion in 1962 enlarged the basement, updated the kitchen, added Howard Tran Hall and expanded the sanctuary to accommodate 175 people. The congregation continues to adapt both its facilities and practices as it lives out God's Word.
Putting God's Word to Work Near and Far
Putting God's Word to Work Near and Far is the church's mission. Pastor Robert Spaulding emphasizes a warm, caring and prayerful congregation, with a goal of helping people connect with God through worship and everything the church offers. That welcome is expressed through worship, education, shared prayer and an open communion table.
Sunday Worship at 10:00 AM
Adult Sunday Bible Class begins at 9:00 AM, and everyone is invited to study God's Word before worship begins at 10:00 AM. The Sunday service is traditional, with some contemporary elements.
A Prayer Sequence at the Heart of Worship
After the congregation shares its joys and concerns for the week, a prayer hymn is sung. Moments of silent prayer follow, then the pastoral prayer leads into the Lord's Prayer recited in unison. Nursery and child care for toddlers is available throughout the 10:00 AM worship service.
Music in the Sunday Rhythm
Doris Rand and Carol Morley serve as musicians. A prayer hymn is sung as part of the congregation's Sunday prayer sequence.
Communion on the First Sunday
On the first Sunday of each month, the congregation celebrates communion together. The communion table is open to everyone.
Bible Study Through the Week and Year
A Wednesday Bible Study meets at 1:00 PM, and everyone is invited. Pastor Robert Spaulding also leads seasonal studies during Advent and Lent, giving worshippers additional opportunities to study Scripture through those seasons.
Prayer Beyond the Sunday Service
In addition to the structured prayer sequence in worship, Grafton United Methodist has a group called Prayer Warriors. The group prays around the clock over concerns brought before it and takes part in an online prayer chain open to anyone in need. The church's prayer for people includes peace, trust in where God places them, awareness of the possibilities born of faith, willingness to pass on love received and openness to God's presence.
