Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Duluth's Central Hillside: A Swedish Legacy Still Reaching Out

Lutheran Church in Duluth, Minnesota

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church is an ELCA congregation in Duluth's Central Hillside, founded by Swedish immigrants in 1870, known for its traditional liturgy, vibrant music program, weekly radio broadcast dating to 1942, and a deep commitment to inclusive welcome, social justice, and global companion relationships.

About Gloria Dei Lutheran Church

A Swedish-Founded Congregation in the Central Hillside

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church has stood at a major intersection in Duluth's Central Hillside neighborhood since 1906, when it moved into the Gothic-style sanctuary it still occupies today. Founded by Swedish immigrants in 1870 as the First Swedish Lutheran Church of Duluth, the congregation is one of the oldest Lutheran communities in the city and the region. Over more than fifteen decades it has helped birth other area congregations, including Bethany Lutheran on the west side and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd on the east.

An education and office building was attached to the sanctuary in the 1950s, and the building remains the congregation's home in a neighborhood that has shifted from largely residential toward the parking lots and institutional footprints of nearby hospitals. The parish takes its continuing presence seriously. As members like to put it, "By God's grace, we're here for good" - a slogan that appears on the banner hanging in the fellowship hall and travels with the congregation to community events such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Day walk and the Duluth Pride Parade.

The Fire of 2016 and the Decision to Rebuild

On the early morning of February 18, 2016, an electrical fire devastated the 110-year-old sanctuary. The blaze destroyed the pipe organ, the altar structure that framed the painting of the Ascension, and most of the stained glass windows. Smoke and water damaged the Gothic interior, the pews, the lower-level kitchen and fellowship hall, and the attached education building.

Engineers eventually determined that the structure could be reused, and the congregation voted to rebuild in place. In the intervening months, Gloria Dei worshiped at Faith Lutheran Church on Duluth's east end while the Synod provided office space. Nine days after the fire, the congregation's free monthly breakfast was held two blocks away at a Catholic church. A month later, more than 100 community members and area clergy joined a service of prayer and song, with the congregation processing around the building with a processional cross to reaffirm its commitment to the neighborhood. The rebuilt and renewed sanctuary reopened in 2019, with new stained glass - including a 2019 "Faith" window honoring 150 years of community - and a freshly restored organ and worship space.

An ELCA Congregation Committed to Inclusive Welcome

Gloria Dei is a member of the Northeastern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Its mission statement, adopted in 2004 after a visioning process led mostly by lay leaders, reads: "Empowered by God's grace, Gloria Dei reaches out as an inclusive, welcoming church, through worship and social action." A vision statement adopted in 2012 builds on that foundation, describing a congregation whose worship proclaims the Gospel with integrity, whose diverse parish family finds unity in Christ's reconciling love, whose faith grows in dialogue with everyday life, whose social action is rooted in God's justice and compassion, and whose stewardship celebrates the abundance of God's gifts.

Gloria Dei has been a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation since 1998, the first in the Northeastern Minnesota Synod, formally welcoming people of all gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations into full participation in the church's life and leadership. The congregation helped establish a local chapter of Lutherans Concerned North America, now Reconciling Works, and has served as a resource congregation for others considering the process. Gloria Dei is also committed to racial equity and to practicing anti-racism in its words, actions, and public presence.

Sunday Mornings: Adult Forum, Sunday School, and Holy Communion

Worship is central to life at Gloria Dei. A single Sunday morning gathers three rhythms around one service.

At 8:45 a.m., the Adult Forum meets in the Lakeside Room on the -2 level, hosting presentations and discussions on the journey of faith, church and society, justice issues, ELCA social statements, and biblical interpretation. The forum runs September through May, sometimes continuing a few weeks into summer, and has featured DVD series such as Living the Questions and Nooma, along with guest speakers from CHUM, Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota, and the wider church.

At 9:00 a.m., children gather in the Narthex for Sunday School. After a brief opening with parents that includes singing and an introduction to the day's theme, the children break into age groups. On the first Sunday of each month from September through May, the whole congregation joins together for Intergenerational Sunday School, with singing, Bible stories, dramas, crafts, and conversations meant to equip families to practice faith at home during the week.

At 10:00 a.m., the congregation gathers for Worship and Holy Communion. The service retains a traditional liturgical character while worship planners regularly incorporate a variety of instruments, and the One Bread worship band leads an alternative liturgy once a month. Gloria Dei practices open communion: all are welcome at Christ's table. Gluten-free wafers and grape juice are available at each Eucharist, those not communing may come forward for a blessing, and communion can be brought to a seat when requested through an usher.

Music at Gloria Dei: Choir, One Bread, and the Annual Blues Service

Music is woven into nearly everything Gloria Dei does. The Gloria Dei Choir leads congregational song and offers choral music that reiterates a theme, enhances a hymn, assists prayer, or intensifies praise. Rehearsals are held before church each Sunday at 8:30 a.m., except on the second Sunday of the month when the band plays, with an additional Wednesday evening rehearsal once a month. The choir sings from September through mid-June. There is no audition; members describe the ensemble's strength as its dependability and welcome anyone curious to try it out.

Gloria Dei's organists faithfully accompany the choir and congregation, drawing on an instrument history that reaches back to 1971. The One Bread worship band draws from the Dakota Road liturgy, the ELW hymnal, and other sources, and involves the musical talents of several adults and youth. Members of the band have composed arrangements for the annual Blues Service in August, a jazz service, and the children's Christmas program.

The Blues Service on the second Sunday of August falls on the weekend of Duluth's Bayfront Blues Festival and has become a local tradition. With new music written for the service and old favorites, the service is designed to move body and soul. Other Sundays the liturgy is led on organ and piano.

Worship Through the Church Year

The Seasons at Gloria Dei follow the rhythms of the Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal and form a thoughtful arc through the year.

Advent begins the church year as a season of waiting, marked by blue paraments and the lighting of candles one each week. Christmas explodes with light, flowers, color, and music: a tree adorned with white and gold Chrismon ornaments, poinsettias, and spreading candlelight on Christmas Eve, when Gloria Dei offers services at 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. The 5:00 p.m. service includes a children's message and is livestreamed; the 10:00 p.m. service features the choir and is broadcast live and re-broadcast Christmas morning at 10:00 a.m. on WDSM.

Lent is a forty-day journey that begins with Ash Wednesday. In addition to Sunday worship, Gloria Dei offers a midweek meal of soup and bread, time for learning, and an opportunity for worship and prayer around the cross. Holy Week moves through Palm/Passion Sunday, Maundy Thursday with footwashing and the stripping of the altar, and Good Friday, with the sanctuary growing ever darker as the story of Jesus' last hours unfolds. At the Vigil of Easter, darkness turns to light and sorrow to joy as the congregation tells its family stories, welcomes new members, and celebrates the first Holy Communion of Easter.

The fifty-day Easter season culminates in the Feast of the Ascension, whose altar painting at Gloria Dei depicts Christ's return to God, and then the Day of Pentecost, celebrating the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church. Each summer the congregation sets aside five Sundays as a Season of Creation, concluding with Lake Superior Sunday on the third Sunday of July, when worship reflects on the gift of God's creation, water, and the ecosystems of the Lake. Autumn brings a Blessing of the Animals near October 4, a Service of Healing near October 18, Reformation Sunday, and All Saints Sunday, remembering those who have died.

From the Radio to the Livestream: Worship That Travels

Since 1942, Gloria Dei has broadcast its Sunday worship service live on WDSM Radio - AM 710 or 98.1 FM. The broadcast is the longest-running live broadcast of a worship service on the same station in the state of Minnesota. The radio ministry remains central to the congregation's sense of identity, and the office can provide CDs of services that have been especially meaningful to listeners and their families.

Worship also reaches beyond the sanctuary online. Services are livestreamed at 10:00 a.m. Sundays through Boxcast (which works in browsers and on smart TVs), on Facebook, and on the church's YouTube channel. Visitors are invited to sign the guest book in the foyer and to join the congregation downstairs for coffee and refreshments afterward.

Faith Formation for Every Age

Children and youth are central to the life of the parish. Sunday School meets from September through May at 9:00 a.m. in the Narthex, with age-appropriate focus on Bible stories, crafts, and the day's scripture readings. Confirmation is offered for students in grades 6 and up, following a two-year curriculum that spends one year on the Bible and one year on Luther's Small Catechism. First Communion instruction is offered for children and their parents when the time seems right. Vacation Bible School is held for one week each summer in collaboration with Trinity Lutheran, also in the Hillside neighborhood.

Gloria Dei's youth participate with other young people from across the Northeastern Minnesota Synod in the Junior High Gathering each fall and the Senior High Gathering each winter, and every few years they attend the ELCA National Youth Gathering. The congregation encourages young people and families to take advantage of Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry's outdoor ministry at Camp Vermilion and Camp Hiawatha, supporting it with an annual financial commitment and offering camperships to help with the cost.

Adults find a rich menu of formation opportunities. First Word Bible Study meets Tuesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Zoom, looking ahead at the scripture appointed for the following Sunday. Whole Bible, Whole Life is a two-year journey through God's Word, currently exploring the New Testament, meeting Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. in the Lakeside Room. Pastor Carlson facilitates a monthly Religion and Science in Dialogue study with the support of the Oreck-Alpern Interreligious Forum of the College of St. Scholastica, and the Oreck-Alpern Forum also hosts Earth Harmony, a study on environmental stewardship. Twice a year, Pastor Carlson leads "Baptized We Live," a five-week class for seekers, new members, and anyone interested in baptism, confirmation, or a refresher on Lutheran Christianity.

Fellowship: WELCA, Men in Mission, Quilters, and Fiber Dei

Fellowship at Gloria Dei is built around small groups that share food, prayer, and service. Gloria Dei's Women of the ELCA gather in three circles: Martha Circle at 10:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday, Eve Circle at 1:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday, and Phoebe Circle at 5:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday. Each year the WELCA team organizes the Fall Fair in November, the congregation's main fundraising effort to support missions locally and worldwide.

Lutheran Men in Mission meets informally for breakfast, fellowship, and service. The Gloria Dei Quilters tie thousands of quilts over the years for Lutheran World Relief and donate quilts to the silent auction at the Northeastern Minnesota Synod Assembly; newcomers are welcome to join them at 1:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday and third Wednesday of the month in the Lakeside Room. Fiber Dei, a knit-and-crochet group, meets from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month via Zoom, producing prayer shawls, prayer squares, hats, mittens, and other items for those in need, including scarves and hats for the Seafarer's Ministry. On the last Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the Hillside Room, the Interfaith Welcoming Congregations group gathers to support the LGBTQIA+ community.

From the Hillside Room to the World: Outreach and Service

Gloria Dei's Service and Justice ministry flows from its constitutional call to "serve in response to God's love to meet human needs, caring for the sick and the aged, advocating dignity and justice for all people, working for peace and reconciliation among the nations, and standing with the poor and the powerless." The congregation's long history in this work goes back to its role in founding CHUM (Churches United in Ministry), a homeless shelter, food shelf, and advocacy organization now supported by forty congregations, and the Gabriel Project, which channels discretionary funds from twelve congregations for homeless assistance. The Parish Nurse Program, begun in the 1980s, funds part-time health coordinators in three parishes in the Central Hillside. Gloria Dei also houses offices and program space for Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota's programs for youth and young adults.

More direct food and care ministries continue today. Since January 2006, Gloria Dei has hosted a free monthly neighborhood breakfast, serving about 180 meals on the fourth Saturday of each month in the Hillside Room. The Care Closet helps unhoused neighbors and others in need with basic necessities, and a clothing mending clinic is offered alongside the monthly breakfast. In 2010, Gloria Dei was an original member of a group of congregations that brought Ruby's Pantry, a food distribution program, to Duluth. The Care Team for Homebound Members visits those who cannot easily attend worship, and a Health Cabinet oversees health-related ministries. GriefShare, a thirteen-week, video-based grief support program, runs on Saturday mornings in the Lakeside Room and includes a bonus Surviving the Holidays session.

The Welcoming Ministries team coordinates Reconciling in Christ Sunday, observed on the fourth Sunday in January, and ongoing work for full inclusion. Gloria Dei gives generously to the ELCA, its World Hunger Appeal, the Nourish Food Program, and overseas projects.

Global Companions in Tanzania, India, Russia, and Honduras

Gloria Dei describes itself as a globally-connected parish, with companion church relationships and exchanges in Tanzania, India, Russia, and Honduras. Members have traveled to Tanzania's Ibura parish since at least 1998, with members including Per and Elaine Wickstrom, Harry Wick, Eldora Recksiedler, and Helen Carlson sharing journal entries, letters, and home-movie footage from those visits. In 2005, three Gloria Dei members participated in an ELCA-sponsored consultation between U.S. synods and their India counterparts. Members have also traveled to Russia's Ural region, narrated by Pastor David Carlson, and to Honduras.

Stewardship, Sustainability, and Solar Light

Gloria Dei's approach to stewardship is rooted in its vision statement: "celebrating the abundance and the value of God's gifts, practicing sustainability and generosity as joyful expressions of God's love for all creation." The Green Team encourages sustainability in the life of the congregation, honors the biblical mandate to care for the earth, and reflects God's redemptive love for all creation. Building and Grounds maintains and renovates the 1906 building and grounds as an instrument for ministry in the twenty-first century. Financial giving is offered through regular offering, online giving, planned giving, and a mission endowment fund, with proceeds from events like the annual Great Sale going toward the Building Preservation Fund.

In 2008, the congregation was one of about a dozen community organizations to participate as an Early Adopter of environmental sustainability using The Natural Step framework, a year-long training process that helped develop creation care teams across the synod. The congregation has since installed solar panels and a solar storage battery on the building, dedicated to the glory of God as a sign of shared stewardship of creation.
