Faith United Lutheran Church stands in Iron, Minnesota, in the heart of Minnesota's iron mining region, southwest of Eveleth and Virginia and east of Hibbing on the Mesabi Iron Range. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregation is known for its mission of leading people into “a growing relationship with Jesus Christ” and for joining Sunday worship with practical service. It is a rural congregation where logging and farming are among the surrounding area's main economic activities and where a large retired population is among its members. Its address is 8964 Highway 37, Iron, Minnesota 55751.
Sunday Worship at 9:30
Members and friends worship every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Communion is celebrated, and a couple of dedicated pianists provide the music. Children have a place in the gathered worship through a PrayGround at the front, where they can stay and be included. The church holds special services during Lent and Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. A summer Vacation Bible School and a September Fall Fest help enhance its worship life. Most youth in the congregation attend Cherry School in the St. Louis County Independent School District, while others attend public schools in Mt. Iron, Hibbing, Eveleth, Gilbert or Virginia.
Two Congregations Become Faith United
In the 1970s, the two Lutheran churches in Cherry and Forbes merged to form the present congregation, Faith United Lutheran Church. The resulting congregation continues to provide the community with a place to worship, fellowship and serve. Its members and friends gather each Sunday morning, and the church defines its mission plainly: “We are about leading people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.” Faith United is an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregation in the NE Minnesota Synod. The merged congregation continues to gather members and friends for worship while extending its fellowship and service into food distribution, seasonal gifts, camps, Scouts, quilts and community outreach.
Children, Camps, Scouts and Quilts
Faith United supports children and families through several seasonal practices. Gifts are provided to families in need at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. At Christmas, an Angel Tree in the church allows members to give gifts to children and families in need within the community.
Children also go to Vermilion Lutheran Ministry Camps, and church members volunteer there for building and maintenance projects. The church sponsors a Cub Scout Pack and a Scout Troop. Its Piecemakers group makes quilts for the annual church auction and also makes many quilts to distribute to schools, Lutheran Social Service and other agencies.
Food Shared on the Fourth Wednesday
Ruby's Pantry, a community food distribution organization, is held on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 4:30 p.m. at the Clinton Town Hall, 8907 Highway 37, Iron Junction, Minnesota. Distribution is drive-through, which limits exposure between volunteers and guests. Each guest donates $25 for a food share and brings two boxes or totes. There are no income or residency requirements, and several Faith United members provide helping hands. The pantry's monthly rhythm gives members a regular way to help with food distribution.
Faith United also maintains a Free Little Food Pantry at the church, stocked by donations from members and the surrounding community. It is accessible at any hour. During warmer weather, food sits in a red, stand-alone box marked “FOOD PANTRY”; when temperatures freeze, the food moves inside Door 2. The two pantry arrangements offer a monthly distribution event and continuous access to donated food.
An Auction That Brings the Community Together
The annual church auction is both a congregation tradition and a community event. Members and the wider community can sell and buy donated items as well as eat and visit with one another. The Piecemakers' quilts are connected with this gathering, and the event provides an opportunity for donated goods to change hands and for people to gather.
Open Doors and Open Hearts
Faith United makes room for people who have been thinking, praying, searching or hoping for a place to belong. The church says, “Our doors are open. Our hearts are open too,” and closes its invitation with “We Say Welcome.” For someone new to the congregation, a dedicated newcomer connection accepts an email with a name and the best way to be contacted. The church's open-door welcome fits its pattern of worship, hospitality, fellowship and service.
Loving the Neighbor and the Common Good
Faith United's stewardship teaching joins faith with everyday life. It begins with Jesus' command to love one's neighbor as oneself and asks whether people recognize a responsibility to care for one another. The church presents stewardship as a way of sharing time, talents and finances, caring for God's earth and serving neighbors rather than treating it only as a matter of money. The teaching connects love for neighbor with the welfare of community, relationships and the common good of all people. It defines stewardship as everything people do after they say, “I believe.” This practical understanding is reflected in pantry service, seasonal gifts, camp volunteering, Scouts, quilting and the annual auction.
Faith United highlights the work of Lutheran World Relief and ELCA World Hunger and invites participation in the Thursdays in Black campaign. Wearing black on Thursdays is presented as a color of resistance and resilience against gender-based violence, and participants are encouraged to share campaign images on social media. Vicar Christina invites members into this effort. The campaign's call to resist attitudes and practices that permit rape and violence extends the church's emphasis on love and care for neighbors.
Giving can be made with cash or check, by text message, or through Realm online giving. Cash or checks can be dropped off or mailed to the church, while Realm supports one-time and recurring gifts by e-check or credit or debit card. These forms of giving accompany the church's stated mission to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and to serve the common good.
Faith United Lutheran Church's life in Iron is built around two connected commitments: leading people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and caring for the neighbor. Sunday worship at 9:30 a.m., Communion, music from dedicated pianists, a place for children at the PrayGround, pantry service, seasonal giving, camps, Scouts, quilts, stewardship and a community auction all form the congregation's shared life.
