Deer Flat Free Methodist Church: A Free Methodist Congregation in Caldwell, Idaho

Holiness / Church of the Nazarene Church in Caldwell, Idaho

Deer Flat Free Methodist Church in Caldwell, Idaho has been gathering for over a century around four core values: worship, connection, equipping, and service. The church offers two Sunday services (Traditional at 9 AM and Contemporary at 10:45 AM), full children and youth programs, recovery and biblical counseling, and operates Camp Cascade, a retreat center near Lake Cascade in Donnelly.

About Deer Flat Free Methodist Church

Deer Flat Free Methodist Church sits on Beet Road in Caldwell, Idaho, in the heart of Canyon County, and has been a fixture in the Treasure Valley for more than a century. The congregation describes itself as a community of believers in Jesus Christ that exists to glorify God through the teaching and application of God's Word and through personal and corporate worship, with an emphasis on equipping believers for service within the church to strengthen the body of Christ, and for service outside the church to minister the gospel of Christ. Lead Pastor Ryan Stoops says simply: there is a place for everyone here, and together the congregation will take the name of Jesus to the ends of the earth.

The church's four core values, Worship, Connect, Equip, and Serve, have been part of its identity for over 100 years. Worship is pursued with biblically motivated zeal and offered in reverence with humility and joy. Connect is the commitment to draw people to God, to one another, and to the wider body of Christ so the church can be effective locally. Equip puts feet to the passion of seeing people reach their full potential in Christ through discovering and using their spiritual gifts. Serve is the commitment to live for something greater than oneself, taking up a towel and giving to bless others.

Two Services, Two Styles on Sunday

Deer Flat holds two Sunday morning services designed to serve different worship preferences. At 9:00 AM, the Traditional Worship service features a choir, an orchestra, and other instruments under the direction of Worship Pastor Carol Whitbeck. At 10:45 AM, the Contemporary Worship service brings together rotating vocalists and instrumentalists, typically two to three vocalists, drums, two guitars, bass, and keyboard, under the leadership of Eli Stoops. Both services stream online so people can participate from home.

What Deer Flat Believes

Deer Flat is part of the Free Methodist Church, and the congregation affirms the denomination's Articles of Religion from the 2019 Book of Discipline. The Trinity is central: one God in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is confessed as fully God and fully human, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried, then rose again, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and will return to judge all people.

The Holy Spirit is the administrator of salvation, the one who indwells, assures, and empowers believers. The Bible is the trustworthy written Word of God, uniquely inspired by the Holy Spirit, and bears authority over all human life. Deer Flat teaches that human beings are created in the image of God as free moral persons, but are corrupted in nature by the fall and unable to restore themselves to right relationship with God apart from grace through faith in Christ. Good works are the fruit of faith but cannot save.

Distinctively Wesleyan-Holiness, the Free Methodist tradition teaches entire sanctification, that work of the Holy Spirit, subsequent to regeneration, by which fully consecrated believers are cleansed from inward sin and empowered for service. The church also teaches restoration: believers who sin can be restored through repentance, the advocacy of Jesus, and the ministry of the church. The two sacraments observed are water baptism and the Lord's Supper. Public worship and the sacraments are conducted in a language understood by the people. The Articles of Religion also look to Last Things: the certain return of Christ, the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, judgment according to the gospel, and an eternal destiny determined by God's grace and our response.

Children at Deer Flat

Children's ministry is a centerpiece of the church. The goal each week is to fully engage children through intentional opportunities in an environment where kids feel safe, loved, and important. Programming is offered during both Sunday services so that parents can worship while children learn and grow in age-appropriate spaces.

Nursery care is available at 9:00 and 10:45 AM for children from birth through age two (or three if not yet potty trained). The space is overseen by Samantha and her staff and is equipped to meet the physical and emotional needs of little ones. A monitor allows parents to check in on their child without being seen.

Preschool classes for potty-trained three-year-olds through kindergarten also meet at 9:00 and 10:45 AM, coordinated by Miss Pam and Miss Becca. The hour includes classroom time, Chapel, music, stories, crafts, snacks, and active learning centers.

At 9:00 AM, elementary students in grades 1-5 attend Sunday School in small groups led by caring teachers. A map of class locations is available at the Kidz Info Booth.

At 10:45 AM, those same students can attend Kidzchurch, a praise and worship service designed just for kids, led by Miss Katie, Miss Julie, and their team. Kidzchurch is packed with music, drama, snacks, and activity centers that work together to engage children and bring them into a relationship with Jesus.

All children must be checked in at the Kidz Info Booth. A label is placed on each child and a check-out tag is given to the parent, who presents the tag when picking up the child.

Special family events include Egg-Stravaganza the Saturday before Easter, Vacation Bible School in June, Kidz Kamps in July, and a Christmas Program in December.

DFY: Youth Ministry

Deer Flat's youth ministry, known as DFY, exists to make more and better followers of Jesus. Students are encouraged to connect, learn, worship, and serve in a safe, fun, and welcoming place where they can encounter Christ and learn how to follow Him in daily life.

On Sundays, all high school students grades 9-12 are invited to DFY's High School Life Groups at 9:00 AM, meeting for a free doughnut and fellowship followed by worship, teaching, and grade- and gender-specific small groups. Discussion questions created by Pastor Ryker focus on the biblical text, discipleship, and life application. Middle school students at the 9:00 AM hour are welcome to attend the Traditional Worship service or the High School service with older friends.

At 10:45 AM, high schoolers join the Contemporary Worship service after Life Groups, with a youth section of seating reserved in the far right corner of the auditorium for those who want to sit together. Middle schoolers in grades 6-8 attend Level Up, the main middle school service, with games, Bible teaching, and life groups led by a team of adults and helpers.

On Wednesdays, high schoolers are invited to Going Deeper at 5:00 PM, a one-hour discussion and lecture on topics that warrant a closer look at the Bible. Connect is the midweek program for all youth students, meeting Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, with weekly worship and snacks, then split programming for middle school and high school.

Camp Cascade

Camp Cascade is a 10-acre retreat center near the shores of Lake Cascade in Donnelly, Idaho, owned and operated by Deer Flat Church for over 40 years. The camp exists to serve Christian churches, ministries, and community groups who seek a Christ-centered environment for retreats, camps, and events. Faith affiliation is not required, but guests are expected to honor the camp's purpose as a place dedicated to spiritual growth, fellowship, and the love of Christ.

The camp has a central lodge and dining hall with tables and seating for 200, a wood fireplace, game tables, and restroom facilities. A separate bath house has four showers, four sinks, and four toilets on each side. Lodging includes nine Genesis Cabins accommodating 13 each (which can be split into two smaller units) plus four Matthew Cabins accommodating six each with private bathrooms. Cabins are heated and insulated for winter use, with ceiling fans for summer.

Recreation options include 10 RV hookups with water and power, a fire pit with log seating for 100 surrounded by trees, a one-acre grass field for water games and volleyball, a sport court, kayaks and paddle boards, and archery.

Work teams are regularly needed for ongoing projects of all skill levels, a good opportunity to bring a group up for a weekend or a few days of ministry in exchange for home-cooked meals, lodging, and the satisfaction of serving the Lord. Summer teams stay one to four weeks in their own RVs, work an average of six hours a day, and receive three meals a day. Located at 1719 West Roseberry Road in Donnelly, Camp Cascade can be reached at 208-609-6332.

Restoration: Recovery, Grief, and Counseling

The Restoration ministry addresses hurts, habits, and hang-ups through several programs.

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered recovery program based on the Beatitudes and a 12-step process. Through this experience, hurting people become willing to accept God's grace in solving their life's problems and grow spiritually. They become free from dysfunctional behaviors and go on to experience peace, joy, serenity, and a stronger relationship with God and others. Thursday nights begin with dinner at 6:00 PM, large group worship and a lesson or testimony at 7:00 PM (with The Landing, a companion program for youth, at the same time), and small groups at 8:00 PM. Celebrate Kids and childcare are provided.

GriefShare is a 13-week support group offering biblical concepts of healing after the loss of a loved one, typically offered twice a year. The setting is a warm, caring environment meant to be an oasis on the long journey through grief.

Biblical Counseling offers gospel-centered counsel through a team of male and female counselors. The goal is to make the gospel relevant by connecting people to the life-transforming power of Jesus Christ through the Scriptures and the power of the Holy Spirit. Counselors address:

  • Abuse (adult and childhood)
  • Addictions
  • Anger and bitterness
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Childhood problems

Local and Global Missions

Deer Flat gives more than 10% of its budget to missional efforts locally and around the world. Tithes and offerings automatically support this work; additional gifts can be directed to specific mission causes.

Local partners include the Boise Rescue Mission, the primary provider of homeless services in Idaho with five facilities in Ada and Canyon counties. Every week, women from Deer Flat provide a meal, worship, and a Bible study at the Valley Women and Children's Shelter in Nampa. Other partners include the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (currently supporting Sean Rooney), Hope House (a home for children ages 6-18 who are emotionally impaired, developmentally disabled, or from disrupted adoptions), Lifeline Pregnancy Center, Stanton Healthcare Clinic, Love INC, and Operation GUARDian Angel, a ministry to National Guard families that has drawn more than 150 volunteers from Deer Flat in a single year. The Good Samaritan ministry offers Christ-centered counseling, inner healing, trauma therapy, group support, and educational resources, plus grants and financial assistance for children, individuals, and families in need.

Global mission partners include Eden Reforestation Projects, Free Wheelchair Mission, Hands of Hope Northwest, Mission Aviation Fellowship, Samaritan's Purse (including Operation Christmas Child), Africa Bright Future Ministries, and Empowering Lives International. Through Free Methodist World Missions, the church supports Claire Heureuse Hospital in Haiti (a facility serving a local population of 250,000), the Bishops Crisis Response Fund for global disaster relief, missionaries Gene and Minori Hall serving in Tokyo with leadership development in Japan and Southeast Asia, and a creative-access mission district in Latin America that runs a school for over 400 students, a Bible institute, a dental and medical clinic, a soccer school, and a chicken project providing meat and eggs to the community.

Garden Ministries exists to fulfill the Great Commission by taking the message of hope to every people group on earth through humanitarian activities, Bible training, online courses, mission trips, transportation, food, and assistance to local churches. Specific activities include resources (cash and materials) for Bible training, books, transportation, food, mission trips, and assisting local churches, along with equipment, instruments, and material costs.

Worship and Arts

The Worship and Arts ministry exists to edify the body of Christ and provide a place of expression for those who are gifted. Participation is open to those in grade 6 and older who demonstrate faithfulness to the church's mission and leadership. Opportunities include:

  • Choir (rehearsals Monday nights at 6:45 PM, leading the 9:00 AM service)
  • Orchestra (rehearsals Sunday mornings at 8:30 AM, playing for the 9:00 AM service)
  • Vocal team for the 9:00 AM service
  • Contemporary worship team that rotates weekly
  • Dancers and actors (drama is featured every Christmas when the choir, actors, and orchestra join together to tell a story of hope and love)
  • Tech teams handling sound, lighting, video, and media for every service

Serve, Next Steps, and Prayer

Serving opportunities are open to all. Areas include children, youth, traditional worship, guest services (First Impressions), facilities, safety, and media. Children's, youth, and safety roles require an application and background check. There are no long-term commitments; people are free to try different positions until they find a place where they thrive.

Becoming a member starts with the Discovering Deer Flat Church class, held the last two weeks of every other month. After attending and signing the Covenant, new members are welcomed before the congregation during a Sunday service two or three weeks later.

Water baptism is encouraged for every believer at the first opportunity after coming to Christ. Parents may also present infants before the congregation to dedicate them to the Lord, committing themselves to raise their child in the Christian faith while the congregation affirms its commitment to minister to children.

A year-long prayer and devotional initiative called Make Room for Company meets every Monday at 10:30 AM, with each month focused on a different area of preparation: personal spiritual renewal, broader church family unity, or community outreach. The year is designed to help the congregation be spiritually ready to welcome the people God is sending, with a monthly prayer, a Scripture-based devotional prompt, and a practical prayer guide to deepen engagement.

Governance and Pastoral Team

Deer Flat operates as a Society under the Free Methodist Book of Discipline and is incorporated in the state of Idaho. The Board of Directors consists of nine elected leaders and is chaired by the Lead Pastor; each director serves a three-year term. The pastoral team includes Lead Pastor Ryan Stoops, Worship Pastor Carol Whitbeck, Contemporary Worship Leader Eli Stoops, Tech and Media Director Sean Day, and Pastor Ryker, who oversees the youth ministry. Martin Flaherty coordinates the church's missions outreach, and Samantha oversees the nursery and children's ministry.
