Corner House Christian Church: Hubbard's Church on the Corner Since 1828

Non-Denominational/Evangelical Church in Hubbard, Ohio

Corner House Christian Church has served Hubbard, Ohio from its corner on Chestnut Ridge Road since 1828, when Jesse Hall began a Bible study in his home. Today it is a Restoration-flavored congregation offering weekly communion, believers' baptism by immersion, Sunday worship with Sunday school, a Wednesday night dinner and classes for all ages, and an active food pantry and outreach ministry.

About Corner House Christian Church

For nearly two centuries, Corner House Christian Church has stood at 6954 Chestnut Ridge Road on the corner that gave the congregation its name. The church's roots reach back to 1828, when Jesse Hall, a New Jersey transplant who had settled in the area in 1801, opened his home in Hubbard for Baptist worship and Bible study around Alexander Campbell's Christian Baptist. After evangelist Walter Scott came through in 1829, Hall and the congregation became simply a New Testament Church. Services closed in 1915 due to age, neglect, and the death of many charter members, then reopened on June 24, 1923. Today the church still calls Hubbard home and remains an independent congregation shaped by Restoration convictions.

The church's stated mission is "To know Christ and make Him known by being a voice of Hope in our church, community, and the world: Being Christ in our Community." That mission shows up across a packed weekly calendar that includes Sunday worship and Sunday school, a Wednesday night dinner and classes for all ages, Bible study on Zoom, a monthly food giveaway, AA meetings, and a dozen active ministry teams.

Sunday Mornings: Sunday School, Worship, and Children's Church

Corner House runs two Sunday morning gatherings in its Sanctuary. Adult Sunday School begins at 9:30 am and is followed by the Sanctuary worship service at 10:30 am. For those who want to participate from the parking lot, the service is broadcast on 89.3 FM.

Three adult classes meet before the service: a "Life Lessons of the books of the Bible" study led by Nanette using Max Lucado's curriculum, a "Discipleship" class with Dennis and Fritz, and a "Family" class led by Dave and Kim that welcomes children along with their parents.

During the worship service, children move to age-appropriate classes. Nursery care is available from newborn through age two. Children's Church classes are organized for two-year-olds through preschoolers, kindergarten through third grade, and fourth through sixth grade. Junior and senior high students have their own class at 10:30 am on Sundays, with a dedicated session for seventh through twelfth graders held on the first and third Sundays.

Wednesday Nights Around the Table

Wednesday evenings follow a steady rhythm: a shared dinner at 5:15 pm and classes for all ages at 6 pm. The midweek program runs throughout the school year and is designed to feel like an extension of Sunday rather than a separate event. Junior and senior high students meet for their own class at 6 pm on Wednesdays, complementing their 10:30 am Sunday gathering.

Open Communion and Believers' Baptism by Immersion

Corner House practices what it calls "open" communion, observing the Lord's Supper every Sunday as part of the worship gathering. The church teaches that the bread and cup do not literally become the body and blood of Christ, rejecting transubstantiation, but that communion is a genuine participation in the body of Christ and a time of union with him and his followers.

Baptism, the second ordinance practiced at Corner House, is reserved for those old enough to understand its significance. The church teaches that infant baptism is not found in Scripture and that baptism should be by immersion, restoring what the early church practiced. Baptism is for the remission of sins and the reception of the Holy Spirit, symbolizing the believer's death to sin, burial with Christ, and resurrection into new life. Anyone who has followed the New Testament pattern of baptism by immersion can become a member of Corner House.

What Corner House Believes

Corner House holds to a classic evangelical faith with Restoration roots. The church teaches that both Old and New Testaments are the inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God, sufficient for knowledge of salvation and godly living. There is one living and eternal God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three persons but one God. Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, born of a virgin, who lived a sinless life, died for sins, rose again, and now intercedes for his Church. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, indwells believers, gives them new life, and distributes spiritual gifts for the edification of the church and the proclamation of the gospel.

Salvation comes through repentance, confession of faith, and baptism into Christ, followed by continued growth in him. The church teaches that Jesus will one day return for his followers, spending eternity with them and reigning as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, while those who reject his offer of salvation will face a Christ-less eternal judgment.

The congregation's stated motto sums up its culture: "In essential beliefs, we strive for unity; in matters of opinion, we allow freedom; and in all things, we show love."

Children, Youth, and Special Activities

Corner House nurtures children from nursery through high school with what the church calls "interactive curriculum." Families are asked to complete a registration form for each child so teachers can be aware of allergies or concerns. Throughout the year the youth program adds special activities, including an October bonfire with hot dogs and s'mores, pumpkin carving, a November pumpkin smashing event with another bonfire, a Friendsgiving gathering with a shared potluck, and an annual Christmas Lock-in that runs from 7 pm on December 18 to 10 am on December 19, complete with games, snacks, breakfast, and a $10-or-under gift exchange.

Food Pantry, Mission Partners, and Community Outreach

Corner House runs a non-perishable food giveaway on the third Friday of each month from 12 to 2 pm. The giveaway is open to the public, requires no ID, and is conducted curbside at the back parking lot under the awning, with volunteers bringing bags directly to vehicles. The day may shift if a holiday falls on the third Friday.

The church partners with several local ministries. It supports AATAP (Autism Awareness Training and Acceptance), hosting a spring and fall event each year. Corner House members serve meals at the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley on the third Friday of the month, and volunteers are welcome. A partnership with Whole Life brings frozen meals to sick and homebound members and supports the food pantry through donation bins and seasonal drives, including a "Socktober" sock collection.

Each year Corner House hosts Cruise on the Ridge, a benefit car show open to anything that drives, with music, a 50/50 drawing, basket raffles, and food for purchase. Proceeds go toward extending and paving the church's parking lot. In October the church hosts a Trunk or Treat alongside the Twin State car cruise.

Women's Fellowship, Men's Ministry, and Small Groups

Women's Fellowship meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 pm in the church foyer. The group's purpose is to empower and encourage women in relationships and spiritual growth, and all women are welcome (childcare is not available). An outdoor prayer walk is held the first Saturday of each month at 8:00 am, weather permitting.

The Men's Ministry meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm, and a Discipleship group gathers on the first Tuesday at 6:30 pm. The Missions Ministry meets on the first Saturday of the month at 11 am. The Worship Ministry, whose purpose is to keep services "God-honoring, Christ-focused, and reliant upon the Spirit's work," meets every Saturday at 10 am.

The Sisters in Christ Widows Support Group meets on the second Thursday of each month for a time of comfort, connection, and encouragement. The group is led by Beverly Hlaudy, Sandra Perry, and Carol Stefanko.

AA Meetings Open to the Community

Corner House opens its fellowship hall to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings twice a week. AA meets on Mondays at 11:00 am and Tuesdays at 7:00 pm. Both meetings are open to the community.

Living by the Word

The church's "Living by the Word" teaching connects Scripture to everyday Christian life across themes of worship, prayer, marriage and family, evangelism, forgiveness and grace, giving, leadership and mentoring, service and outreach, spiritual gifts, growth, baptism, and authentic living. The church's stated path of discipleship follows five steps: large group gathering, fellowship, discipleship groups of two to four people of the same gender, ministry teams, and missions.
