Christian Church of Hillsboro sits in the heart of Hillsboro at 540 NE Edison St., on the corner of 6th and Edison. Founded in 1862, this independent Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement congregation is known for gathering weekly for worship, a message, and partaking in the Lord's Supper, with the Holy Scriptures as its sole rule for faith and practice.
A Sunday Service of Songs, Preaching, and Communion
Sunday worship begins at 10:00 a.m. and lasts about an hour. Three to five worship songs begin the service, followed by a sermon. The service concludes with weekly observances of prayer, communion, and the giving of gifts. The congregation describes itself as a family of believers that seeks to follow Jesus by reading his word and sharing in community with other believers.
Independent Roots Since 1862
Established on October 17, 1862, the congregation came together with the aim of taking “the Word of God, the Scriptures of divine truth, as our only rule of faith and practice.” The Stone-Campbell Movement began in the early 19th century to regain the spirit of New Testament Christianity.
Churches in this tradition practice local autonomy, and Christian Church of Hillsboro has no national denominational organization. Similarities among congregations are not imposed by outside authority but arise from a common understanding of what the Bible teaches. Its identity statement is “No creed but Christ.” Alexander Campbell said, “We do not consider ourselves to be the only Christians, but choose to be Christian only.”
While honoring its heritage, the congregation also looks toward the future and desires to carry out the ministry Christ entrusted to his Bride, the Church. Its stated aim is to equip men with the teachings of Jesus and their implications for the world in which they live.
