Calvary Chapel Massillon sits on Stuhldreher Street NW on the northwest side of Massillon, Ohio, a Bible-believing evangelical community church that opens its doors each Sunday morning at 10:45 and its parking lot each December for one of Stark County's most distinctive Christmas traditions: a free, walk-through experience of the first Christmas called Night in Bethlehem. "We are a Bible believing, evangelical community church," the church says simply, and a warm invitation runs underneath: "Whether you're married, single, divorced, young, old, rich or poor, you matter to us - because you matter to God."
Sunday Morning at 10:45
The weekly gathering runs from 10:45 AM to 12:00 PM at 8151 Stuhldreher Street NW. The single Sunday hour-and-a-quarter fits the church's philosophy that "going to church should be something both adults and children look forward to." Visitors can settle into the Sanctuary while families with younger children head to age-appropriate programs. The fellowship extends to the Fellowship Hall, where seasonal meals are served, and to the parking lot, which transforms into a Trunk or Treat village each Halloween and a Nativity scene each December.
The office asks visitors to arrive a few minutes early, especially when children are coming along. There is no published dress code for the Sunday service, but the church describes its people as "friendly and accepting" and its aim as providing "a place to worship, fellowship, learn and serve for all who know and love the Lord, or who are honestly seeking Him." Sunday morning is intentionally built for a multi-generational room: children, parents, grandparents, singles, and longtime believers sitting alongside those still working through what they believe.
A Doctrinal Statement Rooted in Scripture
Pastor Josh Pizor has committed the church's teaching to a written doctrinal statement that walks through the essentials of evangelical Christianity one article at a time. The Bible, in its original writings, is "verbally inspired of God" and is of plenary authority. There is one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Lord Jesus Christ was begotten by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and is true God and true man.
Because of the fall, all people are "by nature" dead in trespasses and sins and "totally unable to make themselves acceptable unto God." Redemption is therefore through the voluntary, propitiatory death of Christ on the cross of Calvary, accomplished "once and for all." Salvation is received by faith, as a gift apart from works, and the believer is "justified freely by God's Grace." The Holy Spirit is a person who convicts, regenerates, baptizes, indwells, enlightens, and empowers the saved.
The church itself is one Body of Christ with all the saved as its members, and its mission is to preach the Gospel of the Grace of God "in order that God may take out from among the nations a people for His Name." The statement closes with the bodily resurrection of Christ, the resurrection of both the just and the unjust, the personal, visible, and glorious Second Coming of Christ, and a definition of marriage as "a sacred institution established by God" between one man and one woman.
Seven Values at the Center
Seven core values guide the work of the church:
- Scriptural Authority - "The Bible tells us what is right, helps us do what is right and shows us how to stay right."
- Spiritual Growth - taking personal responsibility to grow in the Christian life as God enables.
- Seeking the Lost - sharing faith with others.
- Service Involvement - "Everyone is important and we all have a place to serve the Lord with our spiritual gifts."
- Spiritual Reproduction - being a disciple-making church, multiplying Christians.
- Social Influence and Impact - "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."
- Supportive and Loving Fellowship - grace, forgiveness, and acceptance in relationships.
The seven values are meant to be visible in everyday ministry, not just printed on a wall. The "Seeking the Lost" value, for instance, drives Night in Bethlehem. The "Supportive and Loving Fellowship" value shapes the Sunday morning welcome and the holiday potlucks.
Night in Bethlehem
Night in Bethlehem is the church's signature community event and the outreach that has put Calvary Chapel on the map across Stark County. For multiple evenings in early December, the church campus turns into a free walk-through recreation of the little town of Bethlehem on the night of Jesus' birth. Each tour begins on the hour from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, runs about an hour, and is led by costumed volunteers who bring the Nativity story to life with stops at a market, a stable, and the manger. Dress is casual. The route is appropriate "for the entire family or groups of any size," and light refreshments are served at the tour's end. No reservations are required.
The format has adjusted over the years. In December 2020 the tour was offered as a drive-through experience so families could take in the Nativity from their vehicles. Since then it has run as a free walking tour with costumed volunteers, and the church has welcomed hundreds of guests each December evening from Massillon, Beach City, Canton, and the surrounding towns. For many local families, Night in Bethlehem has become the kickoff to the Christmas season.
A Calendar Built Around Families
Most of the church's programming aims at families rather than at adults-only interests. The annual rhythm looks like this.
On Halloween afternoon the parking lot opens for Trunk or Treat, three hours of decorated trunks, candy, and costumes. In December, alongside Night in Bethlehem, the church hosts a Christmas Dinner Potluck (with a White Elephant gift exchange for those who want one) and a Christmas Cookie Exchange paired with a soup dinner.
Lent brings three Friday Family Movie Nights in the Sanctuary, often pairing a Hollywood release with a more pointed faith-themed film. Past picks have included "The Apostle," "The Passion of the Christ," and "Risen." Holy Saturday hosts a free Easter Egg Hunt for toddlers through fifth grade, with a Gospel illusionist performing at noon, and Easter Sunday morning opens with a free Easter Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall from 8:30 to 10:15 AM.
Summer gatherings include a Bowling Night and an August Family Rafting Trip, with a van leaving the church at 8:00 AM for an all-day whitewater run on the Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania. Adult-focused evenings have included a Human Trafficking Seminar hosted at the church, an issue the pastors describe as "the second largest and fastest growing organized crime worldwide" and one that local Christians can do something about.
Youth Group: Lock-Ins and Camp Wanake
Middle school and high school students have their own regular youth ministry. Lock-ins at the church building run from Friday evening to Saturday morning, with food provided and Nerf guns, in the words of the church, "encouraged." An annual youth retreat at Camp Wanake in Beach City, Ohio, about twenty minutes west of Massillon, has run Friday evening to Sunday morning for students middle-school through high-school age. Drop-off and pick-up happen at the church, a per-person fee covers the weekend, and parents handle transportation. Olivia Carpenter serves as a youth leader and is the contact for retreat sign-ups.
Pastor Josh Pizor
The senior pastor is Josh Pizor. A graduate of Kent State University, where he studied philosophy and worked through the writings of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and especially Plato's Republic, Pizor brings an apologetic edge to the pulpit. He writes the church's blog, contributing pieces that tie Scripture to current events. "Liberty and Justice for All" walks through Isaiah 59 to distinguish biblical righteousness from the modern concept of social justice. "Lasting Hope" turns to John 14's promise of "many mansions" to ground believers in an unshakable identity in Christ during turbulent times.
Pizor's writing and preaching share a habit. He will set up a contemporary issue, walk a reader through the relevant text, and end with the cross. The motivation is the same in both directions: he wants people to leave with a clearer picture of Christ and a steadier hold on the hope of the Gospel.
