Just past the intersection of West 15th Street and North St. Paul in Wichita, Asbury Church has anchored the surrounding neighborhood for generations. The congregation identifies as part of the Global Methodist Church and centers its life around a clear mission: to connect with God and others, to grow in relationship with God and others, and to serve God and others. Two Sunday morning worship services, an extensive Wednesday night program for every age, a year-round missions focus, and a community garden that feeds neighbors across the street together shape the rhythm of the church.
What Asbury Believes
The faith statement at Asbury is rooted in the historic creeds of the church and a Trinitarian view of God. The congregation affirms one God in three persons: God the Father, infinite and perfect in holiness, wisdom, and love; Jesus Christ as God's Son and only hope of salvation; and the Holy Spirit, who teaches, helps, guides, and convicts the world of sin and righteousness.
Asbury's stated passion is to follow in the footsteps of Jesus to mature in the Christian faith. A list of belief statements walks through core Christian doctrines: that God's grace is greater than human sin, that the Old and New Testaments are the inspired Word of God and the rule of faith and practice, that Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly to the earth, and that faith and works belong together. Asbury practices water baptism as a symbol of new life and forgiveness of sins, and Holy Communion as a meal open to all believers that symbolizes the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The laying on of hands is also practiced, praying for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
Sunday Mornings
Worship happens twice on Sundays, at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Both services are offered in person and online through the church's livestream, with a podcast archive that collects past sermons for those who want to revisit a message. First-time guests are invited to fill out a Connect Card so that staff can follow up, answer questions, and help connect newcomers into the life of the church.
Adults who want to dig deeper between services have five Sunday School classes to choose from, all sharing the 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. hour. The Bereans meet in Room B111, Genesis in Room B104/Fireside, the Searchers in Room D106, the Logos class in Room B105/Atrium, and Wonders of the Word (Wow) in the library. Asbury Youth also meets Sunday mornings at 9:15 in Room D104. A Sunday Brief newsletter summarizes announcements and upcoming events, and anyone interested in joining a class can contact Mary Jo Fraipont in the church office.
Wednesday Nights for Every Age
The busiest night at Asbury is Wednesday, and the schedule is built around fellowship and formation for everyone from infants to adults. At 5:00 p.m. the Fireside Room opens for a shared dinner ($5 per person, $20 maximum per family), where families can eat together before programming begins. The nursery for children ages 0 to 4 opens at 6:15 p.m. in Room A106. Kingdom Kids for grades K through 5 runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Room A118, with worship, games, and age-appropriate Bible teaching. Asbury Youth, led by Youth Pastor Levi Thomas, gathers students in grades 6 through 12 in Room D104 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for games, worship, and Bible study. Asbury Young Adults meets in Room A115 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for Bible study, honest conversation, and authentic community.
Adults also have a full slate of Wednesday electives. Options include a study of Shannon Bream's book "Nothing Is Impossible with God," led by Roberta Beckman in Room B111 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.; a survey titled "Prayers from the People of the Bible," led by Allison Woods and Susan Innes in Room D107 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; a Prophecy of the Minor Prophets class offered both at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. in Room D106; and Tech Connect, a relaxed session led by Travis Hoover in the Atrium (B105) for anyone wanting help with phones, computers, or tablets.
Asbury Kids
Children's ministry at Asbury begins in the nursery and early childhood wing under Early Childhood Director Bryonna Koppenhaver, who is also a music teacher for special-needs students in Wichita Public Schools. Her goal is to make Asbury an inclusive place for all children and youth of different backgrounds and abilities to learn to love and follow Jesus. During the school year, Wednesday nights center on Kingdom Kids, a free weekly gathering for elementary-age children from kindergarten through fifth grade with engaging Bible stories and hands-on activities. The children's ministry also offers a "Come and See Me" outreach: when a student has an extracurricular activity, the church will try to attend and cheer them on. Parents can sign up for the Asbury Kids email list for ongoing updates, and a parent form helps the staff know how to serve each family.
Asbury Youth
Asbury Youth, led by Youth Pastor Levi Thomas, hosts events throughout the year designed to help students take a step toward owning their faith for themselves. "Events are often the environment where students walk into our ministry for the very first time." A Parent Handbook outlines how the youth ministry seeks to walk alongside both teenagers and their parents, and a Health Form is required for participation in off-site events. Bryonna Koppenhaver in the church office coordinates paperwork for trips and events, and a parent email list keeps families current on program information.
Adults Through the Week
Beyond Sunday School and Wednesday electives, several smaller Bible studies meet during the week for those who want a smaller circle. The Tuesday Senior Bible Study gathers at 9:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room with food and fellowship, followed by prayer and Bible study at 10:00 a.m. The Thursday Women's Bible Study meets at 9:30 a.m. in Room B111, with Zoom options for those who cannot attend in person. Current work is "Lyrics of Life" by Lisa Harper, an eight-week study drawn from RightNow Media that does not require purchasing a book.
A Wednesday Men's Breakfast gathers at 6:00 a.m. at Village Inn on West Central Avenue. The group talks about life and discusses the previous Sunday's sermon over breakfast. Several Facebook-based groups also exist, including Asbury Women, Asbury Prayer Group, and a Chronic Illness Support Group. The church encourages anyone with an interest in starting a new small group to reach out to the church office.
A Heart for Missions
Missions has long been a defining mark of Asbury Church. The ministry is led by laity who support missionaries locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. A Missions Wall at the end of B-Hall tells the story of each missionary the church supports and asks the congregation to pray for them by name.
In Wichita and the surrounding region, Asbury gives time and resources to several partners. Hands of Hope is a fund that helps meet the practical, tangible needs of those experiencing financial difficulty. Grace Med is a local clinic serving the poor and under-insured. New Covenant Food Pantry, located in Delano, distributes food, hygiene products, and clothing. Asbury also partners with Angel Tree through Prison Fellowship to deliver Christmas gifts from incarcerated parents to their children, and supports Michelle Martling's 24/7 Street Ministry, dedicated to helping women exit life on the streets of Wichita.
The church maintains a list of immediate needs, including hats, gloves, blankets, sleeping bags, and clothing for New Covenant and Open Door, as well as a detailed shopping list for the Cupboard Food Co-op and Clothes Corner. Volunteers help serve lunch at New Covenant on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 2:45 p.m.
Growing Food for the Neighborhood
Across the lawn at 14th Street and St. Paul, near the Indian Hills Apartments, the Asbury Community Garden grows fresh produce for neighbors. Members of the community are invited to stop by, check out what is ripe, and pick what they can use. The garden exists to support the residents of Indian Hills Apartments and to give the church a natural way to know its neighbors. Worship and Technical Arts Director Nathan Snyder, who also founded the related Brewery Ministries, coordinates volunteers. Those who want to help in the garden or share in its produce can reach out through the church office.
A House of Prayer
Prayer shapes the life of the church at Asbury. A weekly Prayer Guide walks members through a Monday-through-Saturday scripture reading plan rooted in recent sermons, and a public Prayer Request List is updated weekly with joys, hospital and surgery needs, congregational concerns, cancer fighters, homebound members, and prayer requests for friends and family. Anyone can submit a confidential prayer request to the church. The list also remembers members of the congregation serving in the United States Coast Guard and Air Force, as well as broader prayer concerns including Israel and the unborn.
Leadership
Senior Pastor Dr. Clint McBroom, a Wichita native, has been in ministry for sixteen years and earned his Doctor of Ministry from Asbury Theological Seminary. Before joining Asbury he served at Central Community Church in Wichita, First Church of God in Newton, Kansas, and La Junta Church of God in Colorado, and he continues to lead short-term mission trips to Honduras. He and his wife Rebecca have four sons.
Supporting the senior pastor are Kate Green as Executive Director, who helps lead staff and day-to-day operations; Levi Thomas as Youth Pastor, who joined the staff with his wife Kinsley and their two daughters; Nathan Snyder as Worship and Technical Arts Director, who has been on the Asbury staff since 2019 and studied the Bible in its ancient Near-Eastern context at AWKNG School of Theology; Bryonna Koppenhaver as Early Childhood Director; and Pastor Jessica, who helps members navigate the church's resources and ministries. Asbury also has a preschool associated with the church.
Getting Connected
Anyone new to Asbury can begin by filling out a Connect Card or signing up for the church's email updates. The church uses Realm, a private online community, as its database and gives members the option to register there for events and giving. A Devotionals page offers additional spiritual reading.
Giving can be done online through Realm, on the Realm Connect mobile app, by texting ASBURYICT followed by an amount to 73256, by dropping a gift in the offering plate on Sunday, by mail, by recurring credit or debit card through the church office, or by non-traditional gifts such as securities or property. Asbury has also purchased a congregation-wide license for RightNow Media, giving every member free access to a library of more than 20,000 Bible study, devotional, and worship videos.
