On Zion Road just outside the Zion Crossroads area of Fluvanna County, Zion United Methodist Church has long served the small communities around Troy, Virginia. The historic congregation centers its life on a single Sunday worship service at 10:30 a.m., where hymns, scripture, prayer, preaching, and an open communion table shape a warm, intergenerational gathering. Around that weekly rhythm, Zion UMC supports a wide network of small groups, music programs, children's ministries, and hands-on local missions, all under the care of a close-knit staff.
A Historic United Methodist Presence
Zion UMC is a historic United Methodist church committed to following Jesus and spreading God's love in the Zion Crossroads community. The congregation is Christ-centered, welcoming, locally focused, and committed to authenticity, meaning honesty about the ups and downs of life and faith. Members and leaders gather to be transformed in the love, support, and accountability of a community that takes seriously both the Bible's teaching and the everyday realities of life in rural central Virginia.
Sunday Mornings at 10:30
Worship happens in a single Sunday service at 10:30 a.m., lasting about 45 minutes to an hour. The order balances music, scripture, prayer, preaching, and communion. Sermons are kept around ten minutes so there is room for other ways of hearing and responding to God in the service. The congregation practices an open table for communion, with grape juice as well as bread, meaning that anyone who wishes to receive is welcome, whether or not they are a church member.
Music is mostly hymns, drawn from the Scripture reading for the day, with an occasional praise and worship song woven in. A choir offers special music most Sundays, and the Men of Zion, a southern gospel band, lead music monthly.
For visitors wondering what to wear, the church is intentionally relaxed. On any given Sunday, some people are in their Sunday best and others are in everyday clothes, and all are welcome.
Music at the Heart of Worship
Music is treated as central, not incidental, to Zion's worship. Becky Fisher, the Director of Music, has accompanied the congregation for forty years and grew up in the church. Under her leadership, two regular groups make music together. The Choir rehearses on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. and provides special music most Sundays, welcoming singers at every level of training. The Men of Zion, the men's southern gospel band, rehearse on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. and lead worship monthly. Anyone with a musical gift is also invited to share special music during a service.
Children and Families
Zion UMC places a high value on being intergenerational, and Sunday morning offers real options for children. A staffed nursery is available for infants and toddlers up to age two. During the 10:30 a.m. worship service, children ages three through ten begin in the sanctuary with their families and are then invited, before the sermon, to a classroom behind the sanctuary where Children's Worship Leader Liz McWilliams and adult volunteers lead them in age-appropriate worship with music, prayer, and activities built around the same Scripture and message the adults are hearing. On fifth Sundays, children stay with their families for the entire service.
The church also operates Zion Christian Children's Center (ZCCC), a weekday preschool for two-year-olds through PreK, along with afterschool care for children up to age twelve. The preschool shares the Zion campus and handles its own enrollment separately.
Growing Together in Small Groups
Sunday School meets at 9:15 a.m., gathering each week to read through a chosen book together, no advance reading required. Other small groups meet throughout the week. A Bible Study on the Gospel of John meets on Tuesdays at both 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The Wrapped in Love Prayer Shawl Ministry meets offsite on Mondays at 10:00 a.m., knitting and crocheting shawls for members of the church and community as a tangible expression of prayer. An offsite Upper Room Study gathers on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. to discuss the monthly Upper Room devotional booklet.
Hands-On Mission in the Community
Zion UMC sees mission as a direct expression of faith and concentrates its work close by. The Home Repair Ministry helps low-income individuals and families stay in their homes through volunteer repair work. The congregation also supports the Louisa County Resource Council with both finances and volunteer hours, partnering with a wider regional effort to assist neighbors in need. At Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, the Missions Team helps several local families and veterans by providing all the groceries and ingredients for holiday meals, with notes and drawings from the preschool children tucked in alongside the food.
Sharing the Building
The Zion campus is a resource for the wider community as well. Church members, staff, preschool families, and outside community groups can rent the building for special events through the church office. The facility is smoke-free, and alcohol, illegal substances, and weapons are prohibited on the property. A $100 refundable cleaning deposit and use fees apply, with discounts for Zion UMC staff, congregants, and current ZCCC families.
Accessibility and a Welcoming Sanctuary
The sanctuary is designed to be easy to enter. Handicap parking spaces lead directly to a ramp into the worship space. Rather than fixed pews, the sanctuary is filled with chairs, and ushers will move a chair so that anyone using a wheelchair can sit wherever they wish.
What Zion UMC Believes
The congregation's beliefs are stated in plain terms. Zion UMC believes that God loves every person, that God extends grace to all, that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are central, and that the Holy Spirit continues to work in the world today. Beyond those foundations, the church is comfortable with differing opinions and encourages newcomers to experience worship for themselves.
Meet the Team
