From a Public School to a Larger Church Campus
Zion Prospect's story begins in 1896, when Westley Thomas, John Page, and John Furby recognized the need for a church in the community. Their first services were held in a local public school building under Rev. John Lovett. In 1900, Westley Thomas donated additional land and constructed a church building that would remain standing for 73 years. The Deacon and Trustee Boards were also established during those early years.
Rev. James Tynes served from 1937 until his death in May 1952. Rev. Thomas F. Paige became pastor in 1954 and reinstituted the Homecoming Service. After Paige's death in 1957, student preachers from Virginia Union University and Lynchburg Seminary, together with local ministers, kept the congregation growing and serving. Rev. W. F. Ivey became pastor in 1958. Under his leadership, a new church building was completed, with its first service held on July 28, 1974. Zion Prospect licensed its first son in ministry, Rev. Wilbur Jones, in 1972 and ordained him in 1976.
Walter C. Johnson joined Zion Prospect in 1985 and served alongside Pastor Ivey until Ivey's retirement. Johnson later became the church's ninth pastor, and his long pastorate brought significant spiritual and physical growth. The church expanded its educational ministries, strengthened community outreach, and enhanced youth ministry. Rev. Haywood Thomas was licensed in 1991, Rev. Walter Eley in 1993, and Rev. Alexander Duncan in 1999.
That growth included renovations and additions to the sanctuary, a baptismal area, classrooms, a choir room, an upgraded sound system, a fellowship hall, a paved parking lot, and a computer laboratory. The church also completed a 20,000-square-foot addition to its existing building. By 2003, Zion Prospect had acquired more than eight acres in total, and early plans for a Family Life Center were part of its long-range development.
Ministries for Children, Women, Men, and Lifelong Learning
Zion Prospect describes a wide network of ministries intended to help people know their place in the body of Christ and use their spiritual gifts to grow in relationship with God. The work reaches beyond Sunday worship into teaching, fellowship, mission, and service.
Children and Youth
Children and Youth Ministry provides worship and activities that help young children develop an awareness, appreciation, and understanding of worship and the significance of God's creation. It also seeks to strengthen their spiritual growth, nurture them as they learn their place in the body of Christ, and contribute to social skills and Christian character through relationships and activities. Children have a Sunday Children's Church, and the ministry includes special activities throughout the year.
Women's Ministry
The Women's Ministry serves and ministers to women of all ages by enriching and equipping them to share the joy of completeness in Christ. Its work centers on studying the Word of God, worship, fellowship, prayer, nurturing, and evangelism. Young women are encouraged to take part in mission-learning experiences connected with witnessing and evangelism, while relationships and activities support their spiritual, physical, mental, and social growth.
Men's Ministry
The Men's Ministry targets males of all ages with mission-learning experiences involving witnessing and discipleship. Its relationships and activities support spiritual, physical, mental, and social growth. The ministry also organizes an annual Men's Day worship focused on causes that benefit men spiritually, mentally, and physically.
Education Ministry
The Education Ministry provides consistent biblical teaching intended to foster spiritual growth and bring members together as representatives of Jesus Christ. Sunday School and weekly Wednesday Bible Study make that teaching a regular part of church life. The emphasis reflects Zion Prospect's conviction that Christian education and discipleship are essential tools for holistic ministry.
The ministry portfolio expanded in the late 1990s and around 2000. Mid-day Bible Study, Adult Praise Dancers, Angel Choir, Computer Training Classes, Youth Mid-week Bible Study, and a Grant Writing Ministry were introduced, and the church hosted a six-week diabetes training program. These ministries reflect the congregation's emphasis on education, worship, practical preparation, and mission.
Food, Care, and Support Across the Peninsula
The Outreach Ministry partners with the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank to provide food for seniors and families in need throughout the Virginia Peninsula. Its reach includes York County, Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, and neighboring communities. The church also provides emergency services in connection with the Red Cross and First Call, and it provides funds to assist Thrive, the Lackey Free Clinic, and the Peninsula Pastor Counseling Center.
A Caregiver Support Group and a Grief Support Ministry extend the church's care for families and individuals. Outreach has also had a prison-facing dimension: in 1999, Zion Prospect launched Jail Ministry outreach in Hampton and Newport News alongside a Grant Writing Ministry. This work forms part of the church's broader desire to make a difference through service to neighbors close and afar.
Pastor Walter C. Johnson and a Long View of Ministry
Johnson is a native of Powhatan, Virginia, and a graduate of Pocahontas High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and a Master of Divinity degree from Virginia Union University. Before entering ministry, he honorably served in the United States Air Force for 30 years. He brought that background into a long pastorate at Zion Prospect.
Johnson has served as moderator of the Greater Tidewater Peninsula Baptist Association, president of the Peninsula Baptist Pastors' Council, and president of the Clergy Division of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia. He has also served with the York County Interdenominational Ministers Alliance, the United Way Board of Directors, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Leadership Council in Hampton. During his pastorate, Zion Prospect received the Excellence in Christian Education Award from the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, the Director's Award from the Bureau of Primary Health Care, a Hampton Roads Coalition for Better Fatherhood Grant, a Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Grant, and the Faith-Based Community Service Award of Hampton Roads.
Christ-like Maturity, Inclusivity, and the Word
The church's mission is “To attract people, develop them to Christ-like maturity.” The mission is paired with Ephesians 4:13. Its vision is to “Provide for inclusive ministries that will reach people of all walks of life.” These aims shape the church's emphasis on Christian education, discipleship, and service.
- Unity, inclusivity, and diversity are valued as essential to the strength and growth of the church.
- Christian education and discipleship are valued as essential tools for holistic ministry.
- Financial stability and effective management are valued as models of whole-life stewardship.
Its beliefs address the Bible, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, eternity, humanity, salvation, and the church. Zion Prospect describes these beliefs as firmly rooted in Scripture and as guides for its decisions. Its worship praises God and glorifies his Holy Presence, while the congregation seeks to raise all in God's word and purpose and celebrates love manifested through the Holy Spirit.
