About Zion Lutheran Church-Food Bank

Zion Lutheran Church is a 1943-founded Lutheran congregation at 808 Porter Ave in Stockton. It belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Sierra Pacific Synod and is known for traditional Lutheran worship at 9 a.m. on Sundays, an active music ministry and direct service to neighbors experiencing homelessness.

From a 1943 Start to Lincoln Village

Zion was formed in 1943 under the guidance of Rev. E.J. Roleder of Lodi. Its first church building stood at Monroe and Willow streets north of downtown Stockton, where the congregation grew and eventually bought property in the developing Lincoln Village area of North Stockton. A mission congregation named Grace was formed there in 1954 under Rev. C.H.S. Hunziker. As Stockton's residents moved toward Lincoln Village, Zion and Grace decided in 1961 to merge. The original Zion building was sold in 1962 to the young Stockton Civic Theater, establishing a relationship with Stockton's arts community. Zion dedicated its Worship Center in 1966. The former worship space is now called Grace Hall and serves as a gathering center for Zion, Iglesia Bautista del Norte and the wider community.

Sunday at Nine: Liturgical Worship at Zion

Pastor Rebecca Blair serves both Zion and community partner St. Anne's Episcopal Church. Her training and experience are in the Episcopal Church in the USA.

Traditional Lutheran worship at Zion is liturgical, meaning that the work of the people is to praise God. The congregation gathers at 9 a.m. in the Worship Center and joins voices with other voices around the world to sing, confess and recite creeds. The service gives glory and honor to God and Jesus Christ and praises the Holy Spirit. The congregation also worships online in real time or at another convenient time through Zion's Facebook. A worship guide is available at the entrance, and the order of worship also appears on screens mounted beside the altar.

Visitors can expect hymns of praise and responsive portions led by a cantor or song leader. The congregation collectively confesses sin and recites psalms and creeds aloud. Communion is shared at every gathering and is served by intinction, or dipping. The pastor gives the bread in the form of a wafer, and people dip it into the following cup of wine or grape juice. Coffee follows worship in the Fireside Room, creating a relaxed transition into conversation and fellowship.

Spanish Worship and Shared Space

At 11:15 a.m. every Sunday, Primera Iglesia Bautista del Norte worships in Spanish in Zion's Worship Center. Zion shares the building with that congregation. Grace Hall, the former worship space, gathers Zion, Iglesia Bautista del Norte and the wider community for church and community needs. The shared use of the property continues a practical theme in Zion's story: the original Zion building was sold to the Stockton Civic Theater in 1962, and the Lincoln Village campus houses both Zion's Worship Center and another congregation's Sunday worship.

Choir, Bagpipes and Stockton's Music Scene

Rhondda Nunes serves as Music Director. She enriches Zion's music at the piano and organ and encourages others to contribute their own musical gifts. The musical mix includes choir, piano, organ, flute, cello, bass, handbells, banjos, bagpipes, quartets of voice and quartets of instrument. Nunes also leads the band RBX and is involved in other music communities around Stockton, connecting Zion's worship to the city's broader musical life. Choir practice is held each Monday from 5:30 p.m. through May in the Worship Center, with the season running from September through May.

Sunday and weekday gatherings create a steady rhythm of worship, study and conversation.

Women's and Men's Gatherings

Women's Bible Study meets weekly at 7 p.m. at the Carr's home, and attendees are invited to bring a friend. Men's Breakfast convenes at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at Tommy's Cafe, 7407 Pacific Ave. The group shares a meal and conversation in a setting that can be serious or lighthearted. The Clothes Closet at St. John's Episcopal Church offers another regular way to serve, with volunteers sorting and distributing clothing from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at 316 N El Dorado St.

Serving Neighbors Experiencing Homelessness

Serving people experiencing homelessness is central to Zion's outreach. The church works with the Clothes Closet at St. John's Episcopal Church downtown Stockton through donations, sorting and distribution. This partnership gives volunteers a direct way to assist the unhoused community. Zion also partners with Family Promise of San Joaquin County. With St. Anne's Episcopal, Zion is a support congregation to host congregation Temple Israel. One month each year, Zion provides meals and other support for selected families, and a Resource Center operates year round to help families get back on their feet.

The church also donates food, clothing and resources throughout Stockton. Its community work includes shared meals, sorted clothing, donated resources and continuing support for families beyond a single meal.

What Zion Believes

Zion summarizes its beliefs through three statements attributed to Martin Luther: grace alone, faith alone and Scripture alone. Grace teaches that people are saved by God because they cannot save themselves. Faith is trust in God's grace for salvation. Scripture is the Bible, understood as God's inspired word for guiding faith and life.

Beyond those statements, Zion believes in the Trinity as God the Creator, Jesus the Savior and the Holy Spirit. It understands the church as the body of Jesus Christ and worship as the gathered experience of God's presence through baptism and communion. All believers are saints, and forgiveness is both from God and for one another. Prayer is intimate communication with God, and the church is here for others. Zion's stated purpose is both to gather in worship and to be present for people beyond the church.
