On a residential stretch of Van Dyke Street on Detroit's east side, Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church has been gathering for worship and Bible study for more than seven decades. The congregation worships Sundays at 10 am EST, broadcasts its services online through Facebook, YouTube, Zoom, and Instagram, and serves the surrounding neighborhood through youth programs, Bible-based outreach, and community days hosted alongside city partners. At the center of the church's current chapter is Senior Pastor Curtis R. Grant Jr., who has led the parish since 1997.
From a Prayer Band to a Detroit Parish
Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church was organized on the fifth Sunday in November 1950. It began with 42 members who met together as a prayer band, with Mother Pitts, Rev. J.S. Williams, Rev. E.A. Rundless, and Rev. E.R. Moore serving as the ministers who helped set the church up. It was Rev. Hardy of Mt. Zion who gave the new congregation its name. The small prayer band grew into the body that, decades later, would install its own pastor and add ten new ministries to meet the needs of the people God entrusted to it.
Pastor Curtis R. Grant and the Zion Hope Family
Pastor Curtis Robert Grant Jr. is from Memphis, Tennessee, where he was shaped by the teachings and nurturing of Pastor Frank E. Ray of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church. He moved to Detroit in 1982 and joined Second Ebenezer Baptist Church under Pastor Edgar L. Vann Jr., where he sang with the Youth Chorale, served in the Prison Ministry, worked as a deacon, and directed the New Membership Academy. In March 1990 he acknowledged his call to preach and began serving as an associate minister at Second Ebenezer. Seven years later, in 1997, the Lord elevated him to the pastorate of Zion Hope.
Pastor Grant is known for teaching the Word of God at a level a child can comprehend, and Bible study at Zion Hope has grown by 150 percent since he arrived. He is supported by First Lady Marcia Grant, who has walked the journey with him, and together they have raised daughter Erica and sons Marcus and Joseph.
Sunday Morning Worship at 10
The Sunday gathering begins at 10 am EST and is offered both in person at the Van Dyke Street building and online. Virtual worship is available on Facebook, YouTube, Zoom, and Instagram, so members who travel, who are homebound, or who are simply exploring can join from anywhere. The service is led by Pastor Grant and is shaped by his gospel-centered preaching. Recent online services include messages titled I Lost Sight of My Value from Luke 15:8 and What God Made from Genesis 1:26, 2:7, and 2:15, all rendered in the King James Version that is used in the pulpit.
Bible Study, Moments of Hope, and Discipleship
Discipleship at Zion Hope extends well beyond Sunday morning. A weekly Bible study meets Wednesdays at noon, and Pastor Grant has also added a morning Bible class to fit the schedules of those who have a sincere desire for God's Word. Group fasting and prayer are built into the study rhythm, and the class itself has grown into a ministry that feeds people both spiritually and physically. Short midweek devotionals titled Moments of Hope are posted online, drawing messages from passages such as Numbers 11 and 2 Corinthians 1, and giving the congregation a steady diet of teaching between Sundays.
Ten New Ministries Under Pastor Grant
Pastor Grant's leadership has been the catalyst for the institution of ten new ministries designed to meet the needs of the people God has entrusted to him. Among them is a Minister In-Training program for men and women who have accepted the call to teach and preach the Word. On December 9, 2007, Pastor Grant licensed nine women who had completed the program in a single ceremony, believed to be the first time a Baptist minister had done so in that number at one time. Zion Hope also maintains an active youth ministry, a choir program rooted in the tradition of the Second Ebenezer Youth Chorale, a New Membership Academy that walks new believers into the life of the church, and small group fellowship that ties the parish together during the week.
Reaching Out: Belle Isle, Laundromat Love, and Community Day
Zion Hope has always reached beyond its walls. Pastor Grant has led tent revivals and community outreach services at Belle Isle, and the church has long hosted Friday night youth activities that give the young people of Zion Hope a place to have fun, experience the love of Jesus, and simply be safe. Two recurring community efforts stand out. Laundromat Love, powered by the United Way of Southeastern Michigan, has brought church members out to serve neighbors at the laundromat. Community Day, hosted alongside the Pastor's Aide and the City of Detroit, opens the church's doors for a day of fellowship and service to the wider neighborhood.
Giving and Joining the Family
Zion Hope teaches that giving should be planned, passionate, and purposeful. Offerings and tithes can be made through Tithe.ly, by texting 616-421-4845, or through a designated Square checkout for Pastor Grant's Love Offering. Those who want to make Zion Hope their church home are invited to complete a New Membership form online; the form is routed to the New Membership Academy, and a staff member follows up to walk each new member through the next steps. The church's stated mission is to reach the lost and broken and to minister to them with the utmost level of dignity and respect, serving in the spirit of excellence with integrity and compassion for the community, the nation, and the world.
