A Disciples of Christ Congregation in South Montgomery County
The Woodlands Christian Church gathers on Rayford Road in Spring, Texas, just north of The Woodlands and within the wider South Montgomery County community. Members and visitors describe a congregation that prizes openness, conversation, and shared life across generations. The church family identifies with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a movement born in the early 1800s in the United States by Christians who hoped to set aside denominational divisions and simply be a united church of Jesus Christ modeled in the New Testament.
Sunday Worship at Ten
Worship is held in person and online on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. Services weave together contemporary music and beloved hymns, with a time set aside for members to share joys and prayer concerns. Communion is a central feature of every gathering, reflecting the Disciples tradition that all are welcome at Jesus' table. A children's moment is part of the service, giving kids of all ages a short lesson tied to the day's theme, and children are welcome to remain in the sanctuary and to receive communion alongside the rest of the congregation. Services are livestreamed on the church's YouTube channel, and a sermon archive is available there for catch-up listening.
The Chalice and What It Means
The chalice is the Disciples of Christ symbol that hangs at the center of the church's identity. It represents the central place of communion in worship, while the X-shaped cross of the disciple Andrew points to the ministry of every person and the call to share the good news. The chalice shows up in the life of the church in weekly communion, in the congregation's name on a sign, and in the rhythm of the worship service.
What the Church Believes
TWCC holds to the core commitments of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Bible is honored as a guide for Christian living and faith, and members are encouraged to explore and interpret the scriptures in conversation with their own experience. The one shared confession is that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior of the World. The church practices inclusive ministry, teaches that all members are ministers, gathers at the Lord's Supper each week to press restart and dedicate themselves to Christ's way, and celebrates baptism by immersion as a symbolic participation in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Children and Youth at the Center
Children stay close to the life of the congregation rather than being sent off to a separate wing. During the service, a children's moment offers a short, age-friendly lesson tied to the day's theme, and kids of every age are welcome and encouraged to take part in worship throughout and to receive communion.
The youth ministry is led by Associate Pastor Kim Johnson, and middle and high school students study, play, pray, and serve together. They are active in the building, in the local community, and in the wider world. Families can reach the youth minister at kjohnson@twcc.org for more information.
Disciples Women's Fellowship
Disciples Women's Fellowship, or DWF, is built around the idea that every woman in the church and community should feel like part of the family. The group gathers often for what members call a Triple F - food, fun, and fellowship. Service projects include filling toiletry bags for the Montgomery County Women's Shelter and the Salvation Army, contributing to the monthly meals prepared for those shelters, and supporting the Pastor's Fund that helps families in crisis. Each year the women collect snack items for college care packages sent to TWCC students during finals. Power Hour Bible Study meets on the second Sunday of the month at 9:00 a.m. in the Ministry Center.
Disciples Men's Fellowship
Disciples Men's Fellowship, or DMF, is known for its barbecue. Using the church's smoker, the men prepare pulled pork, beef, chickens, turkeys, and salmon, much of which is shared with the Disciples Conference Center near Gonzales, Texas. The group prepares a monthly dinner for guests of the Montgomery County Women's Shelter. Over the years, members have built dormitories for an orphanage in Mexico, finished a private home for a family in Matamoros, and stepped in to help other families whose homes were left unfinished by illness or accident. The men also collect new stuffed animals to deliver quarterly to patients at Texas Children's Hospital. The men's Bible study meets Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. on Rayford Road, with prayer, coffee, donuts, and kolaches, and the morning ends in a hands-on mission project at 10:30 a.m. The DMF holds an annual retreat at Camp Gonzo near Gonzales in January or February and joins the Regional Men's Retreat at Lake Brownwood Christian Camp each September.
Young of Hearts
The Young of Hearts is the church's gathering for adults 55 and older. It is built around the spiritual and emotional needs of the senior community and a steady calendar of fellowship. On the first Thursday of each month, the group meets at a local restaurant for a shared meal, conversation, and lasting friendships. The gathering is open to visitors, and postcards go out to those signed up for each monthly meeting.
An Externally Focused Church
Outreach is woven into the life of TWCC. A percentage of general giving is distributed to ten core groups, made up of four denominational partners and several local organizations. On the denominational side, the church walks with the Coastal Plains Area of the Christian Church, the Disciples' Conference Center (Camp Gonzo), Christian Church in the Southwest, and ministries including Week of Compassion, Brite Divinity School, TCU, and Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries. Locally, the church supports the Montgomery County Women's Center, Pregnancy Assistance Center North, Interfaith of The Woodlands, and Gracepointe Dance.
Each month, the congregation collects non-perishable food, diapers, cleaning supplies, and paper goods for Interfaith of The Woodlands, with an updated list posted in the narthex by the collection box. On the fourth Saturday of the month, a TWCC group prepares a meal for the Montgomery County Women's Center and the Salvation Army, alongside the fabric drawstring bags filled with toiletries that the Piecemakers group assembles each month. At Christmas, the church participates in Adopt-a-Family and gathers gifts for seniors. TWCC also takes part in outreach-driven Church World Service events.
