Eighty Years on Timberlake Road
Timberlake Baptist Church sits on Timberlake Road in Lynchburg, Virginia, a sprawling campus of connected buildings where a tent meeting in July 1943 gave birth to a congregation that has now served central Virginia for more than eighty years. A month after those meetings, fourteen charter members voted to organize Timberlake Gospel Tabernacle as a non-denominational church and met in a storehouse until the first building was completed at the current Timberlake Road location. The name was changed to Timberlake Baptist Church, and Theodore Hunter was called as the first pastor. Eight faithful men have followed him, and today Dr. W. Bryan Ferrell leads the ministry as senior pastor.
The church's motto, "We exist to make Christ known and His Word clear," is more than a tagline. It shapes every dimension of life at Timberlake, from the way preaching is prepared to the way the building is shared with ministries that extend well beyond Sunday morning. Timberlake's influence reaches through Timberlake Christian Schools, The Expositors Seminary's Lynchburg campus, and Timberlake Biblical Counseling, all housed on or near the church campus, and through a large missions program that carries the gospel into the community and around the world.
Sunday in Lynchburg: A Mirrored Schedule
Timberlake runs two identical Sunday morning services at 9:00 AM and 10:40 AM, followed by an evening service at 5:00 PM. The mirrored morning schedule is intentional: a family's choice of service is determined by the adult Sunday School class they belong to, so that adults can attend a teaching hour, transition to a service with their children, and still worship together as a household. All three services meet in the Ministry Center.
When visitors arrive, parking lot attendants direct them to a space, and greeters wearing nametags are stationed around the campus to answer questions. A Welcome Center just inside the front doors of the Ministry Center offers a campus map and information about classes. The younger children's classrooms use a pager system so parents can be reached quietly during the service if a need arises.
The services are built around three habits: public reading of Scripture, singing the Scriptures through God-focused songs, and an expository message taken straight from the text. The phrase the pastors use to describe the goal is to make God look bigger in worship, so that worshipers leave with a greater sense of His majesty and a clearer understanding of His Word.
Expository Preaching and a High View of Scripture
Timberlake's preaching philosophy is rooted in its doctrine of Scripture. The church teaches that the Bible is inspired, inerrant, and authoritative: God-breathed in its very words, completely free from error, and binding on every reader. Because the pastors serve as ambassadors for Christ and not as authors of their own message, they draw the content of every sermon from the text itself rather than starting with a topic and searching for proof texts. Most weeks this means preaching paragraph by paragraph through books of the Bible, with attention to grammar, historical background, and the original audience.
The preaching philosophy links to a wider framework the church calls its ministry philosophy. Nine commitments flow from the doctrine of Scripture, including a commitment to Word-driven ministry, to God-centered worship, to equipping the saints for service, to gospel focus, to biblical congregationalism led by a plurality of servant leaders, to making and maturing disciples, to proclaiming Christ as both Savior and Lord, to training the next generation through scriptural education, and to gospel-centered families. The strategy that grows out of those commitments is summarized in four participles: being a healthy church, making disciples, training faithful men, and sending them out to plant and pastor other churches.
The doctrinal foundation extends to the ordinances. Timberlake practices believer's baptism by full immersion as a public profession of faith and a prerequisite to church membership, and observes the Lord's Supper as the second ordinance instituted by Christ. A short guide, "Preparing for Baptism," walks new believers through the meaning of the step.
Music as Ministry, Not Performance
The music ministry at Timberlake is described as God-centered, doctrinally informed, reverential, heartfelt, and joyful. The goal is edification: to help the congregation actively engage in worship rather than sit through a performance. Songs draw from a blend of old and new styles, with the Adult Choir, special music groups, and an Instrumental Team supplementing congregational singing. The pastors emphasize the singing of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs from Ephesians 5 and Colossians 3, with the text of every song treated as carefully as a sermon text.
Worship Leader Brayden Dukes and Adult Choir Director Lori Wood lead the music ministry. Any TBC member age sixteen or older is welcome to join the Adult Choir, and instrumentalists are encouraged to speak with the worship leader about joining the Instrumental Team. A formal document, the TBC Music Ministry Philosophy and Guidelines, explains the biblical convictions behind every decision in the music program.
Children from Nursery through Sixth Grade
The iNVEST Children's Ministry exists to glorify God by evangelizing children, encouraging parents, and edifying servants, so that the gospel spreads among the children, families are supported, and the church is strengthened. Nurseries with screened staff members are available for infants and toddlers through twenty-four months at every Sunday morning and evening service, and they provide age-appropriate Bible teaching alongside childcare.
On Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM and 10:40 AM, children can be dropped at the 3s class, the 4s-5s class, the 1st-3rd grade class, or the 4th-6th grade class, each in its own classroom in the iNVEST wing. The older children's ministry continues on Sunday evenings through Adventure Club, a unified curriculum that walks children ages three through sixth grade through a three-year systematic study of theology, covering the church, the Bible, the end times, man, sin, salvation, and the Trinity. Each child receives a take-home book with an adventure story, games, and Bible memory verses, and earns pins for memorized verses that decorate a personal satchel. Because the curriculum is unified, the whole family discusses the same theological topic together each week.
Timberleague extends the children's ministry beyond Sunday. The T1 division is a co-ed basketball league for 1st through 3rd graders and T2 is a co-ed league for 4th through 6th graders, both meeting on Saturdays in January and February at Williams Gymnasium on Horizon Drive in nearby Forest, Virginia. The league is intentionally recreational, focused on teamwork, sportsmanship, and bringing glory to Christ.
Anchored Student Ministries
Middle and high school students (7th through 12th grade) belong to Anchored Student Ministries, which organizes its work around three biblical goals: Gather, Grow, and Go. Anchored meets on Sunday mornings in the Adventure Club Building at 9:00 AM for a time of discussion and prayer in student watchcare groups before the 10:40 AM service, and on Wednesday nights from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM for the primary student gathering of fellowship, teaching, and fun. Matthew St. Clair directs the ministry.
The Gather goal is connection to the body of Christ through presence with a purpose. The Grow goal centers on Scripture as the source of truth and godliness, with teaching and fellowship around the Bible as the centerpiece of every gathering. The Go goal calls students to be active participants rather than casual bystanders, reaching out with the gospel through service opportunities and fellowship activities.
Boundless: College and Career
Boundless is the college and career ministry of Timberlake, led by College Pastor Michael Duncan. During the fall and spring semesters, Boundless gathers on Thursday nights at 7:00 PM at the church and on Sunday mornings at 10:40 AM in the Old Auditorium. The stated goal is to please Christ by discipling college students and young adults to maturity in Him. A foundational document called "Understanding Boundless: Toward a Biblical Vision for College Ministry at TBC" lays out the philosophy in detail.
Boundless develops digital discipleship resources, sermon series on dating, the local church, the gospel, the written Word, singleness, decision-making, and spiritual gifts, and a podcast that follows the teaching series. Recommended reading covers initial must-reads, progressive sanctification, dating and purity, decision-making, the church and body life, manhood, womanhood, marriage, work, and a thoughtful take on technology and media.
Men's Grace and Granite
Men of Grace and Granite is a three-year cyclical men's discipleship program that meets weekly on Tuesday mornings at 6:00 AM during the fall and spring semesters, led by Dr. Bryan Ferrell. The program covers developing foundation convictions, cultivating Christ-like character, church leadership, how to study the Bible, basic Christian doctrine, shepherding families, and issues related to history and culture. The group uses a substantial printed resource, the Grace and Granite book, and publishes a podcast of the teaching on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Women's Bible Studies and the Annual Conference
The Women's Bible Study Ministries encourage spiritual growth through the study of Scripture, equip women to serve Christ and others, and promote biblical womanhood. Two regular studies are offered. The Women's Morning Bible Study meets every Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in the Ministry Center Sanctuary, currently working through Lydia Brownback's study of Hebrews. The Women's Evening Bible Study meets every other Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 PM in the Multipurpose Room, working through Sinclair Ferguson's "Devoted to God's Church." Tracey Ferrell directs the ministry. A women's podcast follows the teaching.
Each fall the ministry hosts the TBC Annual Women's Conference, a two-day gathering with rich biblical teaching, breakout sessions, food, and fellowship. The conferences are intentionally practical and heart-focused, with past themes such as "God's Word and Our Words" exploring how Scripture shapes prayer, conversation, encouragement, and service.
Sunday School for Every Season of Life
Timberlake offers a network of adult Sunday School classes that meet at either 9:00 AM or 10:40 AM, scattered across the campus in locations such as the Ministry Center classrooms, the Old Auditorium, the Multipurpose Room, the iNVEST wing, the Adventure Club Building, and the Expositors Seminary room. The roster reflects the breadth of the church family.
At 9:00 AM, Wisdom Seekers (older adults led by Don Bowman and Ed Crossett) meets in Ministry Center Classroom 2, Abundant Life (adults with teens and empty nesters, led by Larry Brodie and Matthew St. Clair) meets in the Old Auditorium, and Devoted (young families and couples married three years or more, led by Dr. Jeff Abbett and Craig McCarty) meets in the Multipurpose Room. At 10:40 AM, Maranatha (largely sixty and older, led by David Montgomery) meets in Ministry Center Classroom 2, Boundless (college and career) meets in the Old Auditorium, Koinonia (a cross-generational class led by Paul Clark, Tuck Boyer, and Colin Dingus) meets in the Multipurpose Room, Sojourners (cross-generational, led by Tim Moschera, Zach Riley, and Gus Pinto) meets in the Expositors Seminary classroom, and Grace Walk (primarily empty nesters, led by Mike Sweet) meets in the Adventure Club Building. Several of these classes publish podcasts on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Children's Sunday Schools at 9:00 AM and 10:40 AM are organized by age from the infant nursery through the 4th-6th grade class, with the same staff and rooms used at both hours to support the mirrored schedule.
Small Groups, Membership, and Discipleship
Small groups at Timberlake meet in homes around the Lynchburg area on every other Wednesday evening at 6:45 PM. The groups are designed to apply the Sunday morning sermons in a smaller setting, to obey the dozens of "one-another" commands of Scripture, and to build the kind of relationships that make biblical ministry to one another possible.
Becoming a member is treated as a serious privilege. The process has five steps: completing a membership request form, meeting with a committee of two deacons for a membership interview, attending a three-hour membership class, participating in a covenant commitment service, and being received by a congregational vote. Members can be received by baptism, by statement of faith, by letter, or by watchcare.
The Expositors Seminary and Timberlake Christian Schools
The Expositors Seminary was established on the Timberlake campus in the fall of 2011, and Timberlake was the fifth of the seminary's connected campuses. TES is a network of churches that together train men for gospel ministry, with Timberlake contributing pastors and teachers alongside ten other local churches and awarding a Master of Divinity with an emphasis on biblical exposition and the study of original languages. Dr. Bryan Ferrell serves as campus pastor, Tim Moschera as campus administrator, and Tracey Ferrell directs the Seminary Wives Fellowship, which prepares women to support their husbands both in the home and in the local church.
Timberlake Christian Schools and Timberlake Pre-K share an educational vision with the church, and the church is closely identified with the schools. Dr. Ferrell serves as president of the Timberlake Educational Foundation, and Larry Brodie chairs the schools' executive committee. The schools and the church reinforce one another in the priority of training the next generation in the full counsel of God.
Biblical Counseling, Missions, and the Wider Community
Timberlake Biblical Counseling, directed by Dr. Mark Hager, provides Christ-centered counsel to members, regular attendees, and those in direct contact with members. Benevolence assistance is offered to the same groups, and a Benevolence Committee chaired by Doug Elder reviews requests for help.
Through The Expositors Seminary, the church contributes to a wider disciple-making movement that plants and trains indigenous, self-perpetuating local churches. Members are encouraged to participate through contribute teams: greeters (led by Mark Sims), ushers (Jesse Marilla), building and grounds (Jim Warner), safety (Dannie Smith), medical (Joan Schnable), tech, promotions, music (Brayden Dukes), hospital visitation (Larry Brodie), and social (Tracey Ferrell). A Timberlake Baptist Church app puts sermons, events, giving, weekly bulletins, Bible study resources, and prayer requests on a phone, and a dedicated TBC Member App is available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.
The church's statement of faith centers on the gospel, summarized in four points: God as the holy and loving Creator, man as the sinful creature, Christ as the merciful Redeemer who is fully God and fully man and who bore the wrath of God in our place, and the response of repentance and faith. That same conviction runs through every ministry on the campus, from the senior pastor's expository pulpit to the pin earned by a kindergartner memorizing a Bible verse in Adventure Club.
