Sycamore Presbyterian Church stands on Coalfield Road in Midlothian, Virginia, where two identical Sunday services, filled with prayer, song, and scripture, gather a multigenerational congregation each week. A member church of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), Sycamore blends traditional and modern styles of worship in a setting that prizes both families and newcomers.
The first thing visitors notice is the Welcome Desk, where greeters hand them a Connection Card and the church makes a $10 donation in their honor to a local Midlothian cause. It is a small gesture that signals something larger about how Sycamore sees itself: a community that exists not for its own sake but for the glory of God and the good of its neighbors.
Sundays at Sycamore
Worship takes place at 8:30 and 11:00 AM. Both services share the same order, with prayer, congregational singing, scripture reading, and a sermon. The music draws from both hymnody and contemporary worship songs, and the message centers on the gospel, what Sycamore describes as the good news of rest for the weary, quoting Jesus' invitation: "If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens, come to me and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, CEV).
For those wanting to know what to expect, a sample Order of Worship is available to download. Children pick up age-appropriate worship bulletins - one for ages 3 to 6 and another for ages 7 to 12 - near the Welcome Table, along with crayons. Kid's Sunday School, for ages 2 through fifth grade, meets at 9:45 AM, giving parents an option to attend an adult Sunday School class at 10:00 AM in between the two services. Worship is livestreamed on YouTube, and sermons are posted to a sermon archive.
What Sycamore Believes
Sycamore holds that the Bible is God's inspired Word and embraces its central truths: the deity of Jesus, the virgin birth, Christ's substitutionary atonement, his bodily resurrection, and his second coming. Members believe Scripture speaks with great clarity on all things necessary for God's glory and for salvation, faith, and life.
For a fuller articulation of doctrine, the church points to the Westminster Confession of Faith, the historic Reformed confession that articulates PCA beliefs. The church's own Constitution and Bylaws are also available for those curious about governance and structure.
Sycamore Kids
The Kids Ministry, led by Director Becky Hill, seeks to be a nurturing environment where children can learn about God. Every Sunday morning the nursery (ages 0 to 3) is open the entire morning, and Kid's Sunday School gathers children ages 2 through fifth grade at 9:45 AM. The Sunday School curriculum is a chronological journey through scripture from Genesis to Revelation, with time built in for all classes to come together for music and worship.
During the 11:00 AM service, children ages 4 through second grade are welcome to head to Kid's Worship before the sermon for age-appropriate lessons and activities, and are then escorted back to the sanctuary afterward. On fifth Sundays, Kid's Worship takes a break so families stay together for the entire service. All Sycamore Kids volunteers receive training and background checks.
Just behind the church building sits Sycamore Community Park, a playground built to serve the families and community of Midlothian. Open to the public from dawn to dusk Monday through Saturday and on Sunday afternoons, the park includes play-sets for ages 2 to 5 and 6 to 12, tables, shade, and lighted parking. Restrooms are available indoors during office hours.
Students and Young Adults
Donnie Clinton serves as the Assistant Pastor for Students & Young Adults. Students have multiple touchpoints throughout the week. Sunday School for students meets at 9:45 AM. On Sunday afternoons, middle schoolers gather for Youth Group from 3:00 to 4:15 PM, and high schoolers meet from 4:00 to 5:30 PM. Midweek, middle schoolers gather for Bible study on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, and high schoolers from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.
Students also serve beyond the church walls. The student ministry partners with Elijah House Academy in Richmond, a longtime ministry partner, with students cleaning, painting, and working side by side with that community. A weekly Sycamore Students email keeps parents and students in the loop on Bible study topics and upcoming events.
Women, Men, Grandparents, and Seniors
Becky Hill also serves as the Women's Ministry Coordinator. The Women's Ministry exists to provide a place of belonging, to live life together in true community, and to help one another grow in Christ. Bible studies meet Monday evenings, Wednesday mornings, and Thursday evenings, with a summer break before resuming in the fall.
Several ongoing groups give women different ways to connect. Monthly prayer meetings are held on the first Friday from 10:30 AM to noon at a member's home. MomCo welcomes women who are pregnant, have kids at home or grown, or have mothered through fostering, adoption, or step-parenting, gathering to support one another in tangible ways. Knitting His Love, a craft ministry, knits items for newborns in the church and partners like Music Mission Kiev, meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at a member's home. Aprons and Mitts serves through cooking and baking, preparing food for church functions on the second Tuesday from 10 AM to noon.
The Men's Ministry seeks to equip, empower, and encourage the men of Sycamore to grow in Christ, lead with integrity, and serve with purpose. Bible studies have historically met Tuesday mornings, Wednesday evenings, and Friday mornings, with a summer break before resuming. Each spring, more than 100 men gather for a retreat featuring personal testimonies, prayer, worship, small-group discussions, meals, and a wide block of Saturday time for one-on-one fellowship, group sports, or solitude. Activities have included ping-pong, darts, basketball, river hikes, video games, skeet shooting, corn hole, and closest-to-pin golf. The Men's Alliance meets every Tuesday at 7:00 PM at Sycamore Community Park for an outdoor workout and a real-world devotion.
The Sycamore Legacy Grandparenting Ministry partners with the Legacy Coalition to awaken the role of grandparents as purposeful, faith-shaping disciples. Seminars are hosted twice a year, with morning sessions held on three consecutive weeks in September. A prayer team and core team support the ministry.
VIPs, Very Interesting People, is the church's seniors group, gathering to celebrate blessings, share wisdom, and grow in God's grace together. The group enjoys a restaurant lunch on the second Thursday of each month at 11:30 AM (the first Thursday in November and December), and a bagged lunch at the church on the fourth Thursday at 11:30 AM (the third Thursday in November and December), often featuring presentations from church members or partner organizations.
Through the Roof: Disabilities Ministry
Through the Roof exists to glorify God by including those with disabilities in the ministry of Sycamore. The ministry invites families to contact the church office before visiting so that buddies, modified curriculum, and other supports can be arranged. Friends for Life, a gathering for adults of all abilities, meets every other Thursday evening at Sycamore for a couple of hours of shared food, conversation about Jesus, and slow, comfortable friendship. Luke Martin oversees the ministry.
English as a Second Language
The ESL program offers free classes for every level of English, from beginner to advanced, with instruction in speaking, reading, and writing. Registration Day takes place in mid-September, with placement tests taking about 30 minutes. Regular classes meet Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11:45 AM, beginning in late September and running through late May. Childcare is provided for students, though space is limited, and students purchase their own books.
A Conversation Group gathers Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:00 AM for intermediate-to-advanced English practice in a relaxed setting. A Simple English Bible Study meets Fridays from 9:30 to 11:00 AM, with vocabulary, pronunciation, and Bible discussion, open to anyone regardless of faith background. The program follows Chesterfield County Public Schools for bad weather and holiday closings. Sandra Learned directs ESL.
Sycamore Arts
The Arts Ministry is a community for creators, performers, makers, and thinkers collaborating to impact the church and neighbors with the beauty and truth of Christ. Mike Breakall directs the ministry. The Extra-Ordinary art exhibit, named for the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, celebrates the extraordinary - the true, just, pure, and virtuous - found in everyday life. The annual exhibit runs from early October through mid-November, with an opening reception on the first evening. Artists are invited to submit work that explores how the extraordinary appears in the ordinary.
Community Groups
At Sycamore, community groups are the primary way members live life together and care for one another in both good times and hard times. Those ready to join a group can browse and sign up through the Church Center app.
Giving and Mission
Sycamore's giving supports the congregation, the local community, and global mission work. Local ministry partners include Elijah House Academy and the Pregnancy Resource Center of Metro Richmond. International missionaries supported by the church include Tim and Therese Galage and the Gelstons in Germany. Within the congregation, members enjoy fellowship events like the Back Yard Bash and fresh hot coffee every Sunday morning.
Gifts can be made in person at services, by mail to the church office, or online through the church's giving platform. Year-end contributions must be delivered or postmarked by December 31 to be deductible for that calendar year. Members may also give appreciated securities held for more than one year for tax-efficient giving, transferring shares directly through their broker.
A benevolence fund offers emergency financial help for members and regular attenders facing hardship. Facility use is available for community events by request.
To stay connected, a weekly News & Notes email brings the latest on what is happening at Sycamore and around the Midlothian community. The church office is open Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 4 PM at 510 Coalfield Road, Midlothian, Virginia.
