Sunset Church of Christ in Lubbock: Bible-Centered Worship, a Lifelong Deaf Ministry, and a Worldwide Mission Network

Church of Christ Church in Lubbock, Texas

Sunset Church of Christ is a Bible-centered congregation on 34th Street in Lubbock, Texas, known for its longtime deaf ministry, an active Sunday and Wednesday teaching schedule, and a worldwide mission network.

About Sunset Church of Christ

Sunday Mornings, Sunday Evenings, and Wednesday Nights

Worship times and Bible classes fill the week at Sunset Church of Christ. On Sundays, Bible classes for all ages meet at 9:15 a.m., and two full worship assemblies follow at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., with the 10:30 gathering also livestreamed on YouTube. A Sunday evening service is held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday nights add two Bible class sessions at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., with the earlier hour designed for commuters. The assemblies are described as warm, friendly, and refreshing, with preaching and teaching drawn straight from the text.

A Lifelong Ministry with the Deaf Community

Few things set Sunset apart more than its deaf ministry, a work that has been part of the congregation for decades. Sign-language Bible classes and a separate worship schedule run alongside the regular services. On Sundays, the deaf community gathers at 9:00 a.m. for Bible class in room 225, then for worship at 10:15 a.m., with sign-language small groups meeting at 5:00 p.m. On Wednesdays, the deaf Bible class meets at 7:00 p.m. in room 225. The ministry can be reached by email at deaf@sunset.cc or by videophone at 806-589-4554. Members of the deaf community, including missionaries fluent in American and Mexican Sign Language, have gone on to serve in places such as Mexico City and Tauranga, New Zealand, carrying the same sign-language thread through the church's wider mission work.

Just Kids, LTC, and the Youth Years

Children's ministry runs from the Just Kids program through graded Bible classes and into Leadership Training for Christ (LTC), a year-round Scripture-and-skills program for students in third through twelfth grade. LTC events span art, speech, song leading, Bible Bowl, Scripture memorization, daily devotion, puppets, drama, chorus, and Signing for the Deaf, with participants preparing throughout the year for the Easter weekend convention in Dallas. Carolyn Wright, who has taught at Just Kids for 24 years, directs the children's program alongside Leah Rader, the Interim Children's Education Minister. The Sunset Youth Ministry gathers teenagers for Bible study, retreats, camps, and service work, with summer trips to White River Youth Camp a longtime staple. Garrett Behrends, a Lubbock Christian University graduate with more than a decade of student ministry experience, leads the effort alongside Tristen Herbert, a former AIM missionary who joined the staff in May 2024.

University-Age Ministry and AIM

University-age students are served through Cup of Christ, the college ministry based at cupofchrist.org, and through AIM Sunset (Abide Institute of Ministry), which sends young adults out to mission points such as Monrovia, Liberia; Cookeville, Tennessee; and Tauranga, New Zealand. College Minister Jeremy Aaron oversees the work after seven years on a similar campus in Wichita Falls and a five-year church-planting stint in Falkirk, Scotland, with his wife Jenny. Shanery Morrisett serves as a college intern on the team.

Adult Classes and Small Groups

Adults have several ways to study together. Sunday morning classes run on a quarterly plan with a single study guide used across all adult groups. Wednesday evenings pivot to short five-week series. Small groups fill out the rest of the week, with most meeting on Sunday evenings but others spread across different days and life stages. Groups are organized for families with young children, empty-nesters, college-age young adults, and men and women, with some meeting year-round and others gathering only in the spring and fall. Sunset describes the goal as "one-another" Christianity, drawing on Acts 2:42 as the pattern for prayer, encouragement, and shared meals. A spiritual-gifts assessment is available through an online tool for those who want to identify their fit within the body.

Strong in Christ: Single Mothers' Ministry

Strong in Christ is the name the single mothers' ministry gives itself, and the group meets Wednesday evenings, sharing a meal at 6:00 p.m. and class at 7:00 p.m. during the fall and spring. In summer the schedule shifts to a 6:15 dessert gathering followed by W.O.W. (Women of Worship) at 7:00 p.m. in the Flag Room. Tracy Coffman and Pam Crosno coordinate the group, which exists to support mothers parenting without a spouse and to provide monthly fellowship gatherings, practical parenting resources, and a place of renewal. Sunset's Women's Ministry carries a quieter profile, anchored by the verse displayed on its page: "His mercies are new every morning" (Lamentations 3:22-23). Lisa Raney coordinates intergenerational activities across the family ministries.

A Global Mission Network

Missions have been at the heart of Sunset for more than a quarter-century, beginning in Mexico City and now reaching across five continents:

  • Apaxco, Mexico. Israel and Nelly Molina started the church in 2017 after earlier work in Mexico City. Their record includes nearly 200 baptisms, four AIM teams hosted, and dozens of marriage seminars. The Apaxco church building has now been purchased outright after a recent capital campaign reached its goal.
  • Mexico City. Gerardo and Carola Garcia preach for the Downtown congregation and lead men's and women's retreats across Mexico. The Garcias also serve as AIM Coordinators.
  • Mexico City (youth). Milo and Rut, both SIBI graduates, serve as evangelist and youth director. Rut is fluent in Mexican and American Sign Language.
  • Tecámac, Mexico. Amador and Nicolasa, a TIBI graduate mentored by Gerardo, planted a growing congregation now at 55 members.
  • Apaxco support. Enrique, Lulu, Eder, and Ana assist Israel in Apaxco, supporting evangelism, preaching, and youth outreach.
  • Pachuca, Mexico. A team of three families trained at Baxter School of Biblical Studies and deployed in May 2025 in partnership with Great Cities Missions. The Sunset Mission Trip visited and helped with service projects.
  • Tauranga, New Zealand. David and Olivia Nelson, with their sons Caleb and Seth, plant the Otomoti Church of Christ, with David also serving as a New Zealand military chaplain and guest instructor at the local school.
  • Athens, Greece. Peter, Peace, Purity, and Prudence serve the Evrou congregation, with Peter also teaching at the Athens school.
  • Buea, Cameroon. Aaron and Elizabeth's home Bible study has grown into a 250 to 300-member congregation with twelve satellite schools, four graduating classes, and 109 baptisms in the most recent year.
  • Current AIMers. Matthew in Monrovia, Liberia; Evelyn Molina in Cookeville, Tennessee; and Connor Baker in Tauranga, New Zealand.

The Ministerial Team

Trey Morgan has served as Lead Minister since 2023, after thirty-one years of ministry in Tulia and Childress, Texas. He holds degrees from Sunset International Bible Institute and Andersonville Theological Institute, and together with his wife Lea has written three books on marriage. Jeremy Aaron joined the staff as College Minister after seven years in Wichita Falls and a church-planting stint in Falkirk, Scotland. Steve Linscomb, the Executive Minister, came aboard in early 2024 after a long career in television broadcasting and school administration at Abilene Christian University and Judson ISD in San Antonio. Garrett Behrends, a Lubbock Christian University graduate, returned to Lubbock in September 2021 after seven years in student ministry in Murrieta, California. Bill Tracy has served as Spiritual Formation Minister since 2003, after seven years of church planting in San Diego and a stint as Assistant Dean of Missions at SIBI. Leah Rader is the Interim Children's Education Minister; she has homeschooled her three sons and has served with LTC, Sunset Youth, and White River Youth Camp for decades. Tristen Herbert joined as one of two Youth Ministers in May 2024 after AIM service in Arlington, Texas. Matt Glawe coordinates outreach and men's ministry alongside his preaching duties. Josh Wheeler leads the worship ministry, and Carolyn Wright directs the Just Kids program.

Sunset International Bible Institute

SIBI shares Sunset's campus and history, and the two feed each other. The institute trains preachers and missionaries who go on to plant churches from Latin America to Eastern Europe to the South Pacific. Several of the missionary families Sunset supports were trained at SIBI or its Spanish-language associate school, TIBI. Tim Burow, the institute's president, also preaches across the United States and in more than thirty nations.

Sermons, Livestreams, and Giving

Sermons are recorded weekly and posted in the online archive, with recent teaching series including "Unshakable," a long walk through core doctrines such as worship, the Bible, the Holy Spirit, grace, and eternal life, and "Prove It," an apologetics series covering the resurrection, science and faith, and the reliability of Scripture. The 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship is livestreamed and remains available afterward. Giving is handled online through Fellowship One, with Penny Carroll (pennyc@sunset.cc) answering donation questions.
