Sugar Land Church of Christ sits on Voss Road in the southwest suburbs of Houston, where for years it has welcomed neighbors into a family atmosphere built around Scripture, song, and the Lord's Supper. The congregation describes itself as a sincere group of believers who value the Bible and seek to live out the love of Christ, and its members greet visitors on the parking lot and again at the door with the kind of warmth that the family considers part of the church's calling.
A Sunday Built Around the Word
Sunday is the centerpiece of the week at Sugar Land Church of Christ. Bible classes for all ages begin at 9:00 a.m., with a preschool through third grade class offered as a hybrid of in-person and Zoom participation, and a hybrid adult class that is also livestreamed. The current adult study series works through Philippians, and members use the Foundations Adult Bible Study from Gospel Advocate as a guide.
At 10:00 a.m., the congregation gathers for Morning Worship. Each Sunday service follows the same simple pattern: a time of worship through singing, prayer, the Lord's Supper, a collection, and preaching from the Scriptures. The church describes the sermon as sound preaching from the Bible, and the entire hour is built to give every part of the assembly a voice. The service is offered in English and follows the pattern that has shaped churches of Christ for generations.
The day does not end at noon. At 4:00 p.m., the church family meets again for Evening Worship, a lighter gathering in which members sing, pray, commune, give, and study together. The double assembly on Sunday reflects a conviction that being the church is something to be practiced at length, and that the table of the Lord is meant to be shared on the first day of the week.
Bible Classes for Every Age and Stage
Beyond Sunday morning, Sugar Land Church of Christ invests heavily in ongoing Bible study. A Tuesday morning virtual class at 11:00 a.m. gathers seniors for Bible study and fellowship through Zoom, giving older members a dedicated hour in the middle of the week. The church also offers a Tuesday morning women's virtual Bible study at the same hour, connecting women across the area for study and prayer.
Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. are the church's midweek anchor. A class for adults and a separate class for middle school and high school students meet on Zoom, with a phone-in option for those who prefer audio only. The youth track runs alongside the adult track so that teenagers can study Scripture at their own level while their parents and other adults do the same. Parents of preschool-age children are also welcome; the church keeps the early childhood class on the Sunday rotation so families with the smallest members have a place of their own as well.
Vacation Bible School is held each summer as a concentrated week of teaching, crafts, and fellowship for children. Recent event photos capture a VBS week, and the congregation's Mothers Day Breakfast has become an annual tradition as well, a chance for the family to honor the women of the church with a shared meal.
Beliefs Drawn from the Word
Sugar Land Church of Christ draws its beliefs entirely from biblical teaching, and the congregation embraces the well-known churches-of-Christ principle of speaking where the Bible speaks and being silent where the Bible is silent. The core truths the church upholds include belief in the one true God existing in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and in the Bible as the only authoritative, infallible, and inerrant Word of God. Members affirm the deity of Jesus Christ, his virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, crucifixion, and resurrection.
The church teaches that salvation is the free gift of God's grace, received through faith in Jesus as God's only Son, and that such faith moves a person to confess that faith, repent of sins, and be baptized for the remission of sins. The church cites John 3:16, Romans 10:9-10, Acts 3:19, Acts 2:38, and Mark 16:16 as the foundation for that teaching, and notes that there is no verse anywhere in the entire Bible that speaks of the sinner's prayer as a means of salvation. The church's stated plan of salvation walks through six steps - Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess, Baptism, and Be faithful until death - each tied to specific verses.
The church also holds to the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit received by all Christians upon baptism, believes the church is composed of all those who have been born again according to biblical teaching, and looks forward to the second coming of Christ, when all people from all time will be judged by God.
Mission, Vision, and Core Values
The mission of Sugar Land Church of Christ is rooted in the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:19 - to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything he commanded. In practical terms, the congregation frames that mission as saving souls and keeping souls saved.
The vision that flows out of that mission emphasizes a positive and welcoming atmosphere, strict adherence to and respect for Scripture, a love for God, and an open expression of the love of Jesus to everyone who enters the building. Five core values shape that vision: reverence, respect, service, love, and compassion. Reverence is described as an awe of God and his works that leads to complete surrender. Respect is owed to God, to Scripture, and to other people. Service is the display of love through selfless action, rooted in humility and empathy. Love is commanded and modeled, given without limits and across boundaries. Compassion extends grace to every person, recognizing that each one has a story with a past, a present, and a future, and that everyone is still a work in progress.
A Leadership Team of Shepherds and Servants
Minister Dr. Lewis Parker, IV, DMin leads the preaching and pastoral ministry of the church. A Houston-area native who was baptized in 1993 and began preaching at age 11, Parker served as youth minister for the Missouri City church of Christ from 2007 to 2010, then as minister for the Darien Loop church of Christ from 2010 to 2018, before joining Sugar Land as minister in June 2018. He holds degrees from College of the Mainland, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, South Texas College of Law-Houston, Lubbock Christian University, and Abilene Christian University, where he completed his Doctor of Ministry. He and his wife Tangeniqua have two children, Zephaniah and Zehyrah.
Wendell Hart serves as Family Care Minister, a role he has held for the past several years after serving the congregation as assistant minister for twenty-five years. Originally from the Chicago area, Hart was baptized in 1977 and has been part of Sugar Land for three decades, also serving as a deacon and as a worship leader, and as one of the speakers on the former Eternal Truth Radio Broadcast on KCOH Radio. He works professionally as a senior analyst with Willis Towers Watson and holds degrees from Lubbock Christian University and Southwestern Christian College.
The elders of the church are Bobby R. Allen, Rodney Anderson, LeRoy Hall, Roy Johnson Jr., and Charles Smith. The elders oversee the work of the congregation and guard the flock against false teaching. The deacons, who serve the congregation and support its work and operations, are Ricardo Cisco, Tony Duckett, Michael Harris, Wendell Hart, Jimmy L. Holman, Reginald Phillips, Tony Talley, and George Walker.
Mission Across the Street and Around the World
Sugar Land Church of Christ carries a global vision of its own and supports a wide portfolio of mission works. Domestically, the church partners with the Prairie View Church of Christ, the MLK Street Church of Christ in Wharton, the First Street Church of Christ in Cleveland, Texas, and Southwestern Christian College. It also supports Lifeline Chaplaincy and the Church of Christ Disaster Relief Effort.
Internationally, mission fields include India and Pakistan, Swaziland, Nigeria (with specific work in Lagos), Haiti - where the church sponsors the Eglise Du Christ de Corail-Cesselesse (Church of Christ) - and Guyana in South America. The church's published mission support makes it possible for members to respond with financial gifts toward these efforts, including through a designated Haiti Mission Sponsorship Form on the church's resources page.
Worship, Giving, and Staying Connected
Sunday worship at Sugar Land includes congregational singing without instrumental accompaniment, a pattern common to churches of Christ that members describe simply as worship through singing. Communion is observed each Sunday, as is a freewill collection. For those who cannot attend in person, services are livestreamed, with recordings available on Vimeo and YouTube.
Giving is presented as an act of worship, and the church provides several ways to give. Members can give in person during worship, mail a contribution to the post office box, or give online through the church's secure giving page. A text-to-give option through My Call Now is also available.
The One Call Now system keeps the congregation informed of weather cancellations, special events, and emergency alerts through email, SMS, and voice calls. Members can update their contact information through a self-service portal at any time, and the church keeps that information secure.
A Practical Note for Visitors
Visitors are welcome to dress comfortably; the Sunday gathering draws a cross-section of the community in business casual and dressy attire without a fixed dress code. Parking is available on site, and greeters meet visitors both on the lot and at the entrance. The address is 15590 Voss Road, Sugar Land, Texas 77498, with a mailing address of PO Box 617, Sugar Land, TX 77487-0617. The church office is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and staff can be reached at (281) 561-0881 or info@slcoc.org. The Safety and Security Ministry works behind the scenes to keep the environment safe during every service and event.
Annual Gatherings That Mark the Year
Beyond the weekly rhythm, a few annual events give the church calendar its shape. The Ladies' Retreat, held every other year at area hotels, draws women from across the region for a weekend of fellowship, encouragement, and spiritual growth - the 2027 retreat is set for Embassy Suites by Hilton at Hughes Landing in The Woodlands, anchored in the theme "Anchored Even in the Chaos!" Mothers Day Breakfast and Vacation Bible School round out a calendar designed to keep multiple generations engaged in the life of the church.
Rooted on Voss Road, Reaching Far Beyond
Sugar Land Church of Christ is, at its heart, a neighborhood congregation with a worldwide family. The same gathering that meets on Voss Road each Sunday to sing, pray, commune, and preach supports work in Haiti and India, partners with other Texas congregations, and trains children, teenagers, and seniors in the Scriptures throughout the week. The church's identity is rooted in the conviction that the Bible is the final authority for faith and practice, that salvation comes through hearing, believing, repenting, confessing, and being baptized, and that the Lord's people are called to love across every boundary. Whether a visitor arrives once or every week, the welcome on Voss Road is the same - a sincere atmosphere, a warm greeting, and an open invitation to study the Word and worship the God who gave it.
