A Swedish Heritage Congregation in Stanchfield
Stanchfield Baptist Church sits on Midway Street in the small community of Stanchfield, Minnesota, where it has gathered believers for more than 160 years. The congregation's earliest members were Swedish immigrants who left their homes in pursuit of religious freedom, and the church traces its roots back to 1866. Today it remains a small, family-shaped community of believers who describe themselves as united in loving God, growing in Christ, and serving in the Spirit.
From Orsa to the Stanchfield Prairie
The story of the church begins in Orsa, a parish in central Sweden. In June of 1862, families from Orsa who had faced religious persecution from the State Church - some imprisoned for their beliefs, others threatened with death - made the long crossing to America and settled the Stanchfield area. They cleared land, began farming, and within a few years organized the church. The founding date of 1866 marks the beginning of that organized congregation.
To keep that story accessible, the church maintains the Orsa-Stanchfield Project, a research effort that records the names, dates, and documents of those founding families. Historical records, photographs, and genealogical information are gathered in a companion archive at SBCGen.com, where descendants and curious neighbors can explore the heritage of the original Swedish Baptist settlers.
Sundays at Stanchfield
Sunday mornings follow a steady rhythm that gives the whole family a place. From 9:00 to 9:15 a.m., the adult Sunday school class gathers for prayer. Sunday school classes for children run from 9:15 to 9:50 a.m., and the hour closes with coffee and fellowship from 9:50 to 10:20 a.m.
Worship begins at 10:30 a.m. and runs through singing and the study of Scripture. Two specialized rooms serve families: a nursery for children from six months through pre-kindergarten, and the Grow Zone for kindergarten through fifth grade. A separate room is reserved for nursing mothers who need a quiet place during the service.
Those who cannot attend in person can catch up through the church's YouTube channel, where sermons are posted each week. The messages typically run about an hour and are preached by Interim Pastor David Melin and guest speakers.
Wednesday Nights for the Whole Family
From September through May, the church partners with Braham Covenant Church to host Wednesday Night Church for the Whole Family. The evening begins with a light supper at 6:00 p.m. and moves into programming from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade take part in club programs, while students in sixth through twelfth grade gather for youth group that includes small groups, Bible study, and games. Adults are invited into a separate adult Bible study that runs alongside the youth and children's activities. The whole evening takes place at Braham Covenant Church, a practical expression of cooperation between the two neighboring congregations.
Children, Youth, and the Next Generation
Stanchfield Baptist invests heavily in the next generation. Sunday morning opportunities include the nursery for infants through pre-kindergarten, Sunday school for kindergarten through fifth grade, and the Grow Zone, an extended teaching hour that follows the main service from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. On Wednesdays during the school year, club programs and youth group give children and teenagers their own structured time of teaching and fellowship. Vacation Bible School and other seasonal events round out the year, and all volunteers who work with children are screened before they are placed in service.
What the Church Believes
The church's statement of faith centers on the Bible as the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, with supreme authority in matters of faith and conduct. It teaches one living and true God eternally existing in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - equal in every divine perfection and executing distinct but harmonious roles in creation, providence, and redemption.
Members affirm belief in Jesus Christ's virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension, perpetual intercession, and personal visible return. The Holy Spirit is described as the one who convicts the world of sin, regenerates, sanctifies, and empowers every believer, indwelling them as an abiding helper, teacher, and guide.
The church's mission statement gathers these convictions into three commitments: to glorify God through worship, obedience, and love; to equip and edify the body of Christ for ministry of service, fellowship, and spiritual growth; and to proclaim Christ to the community and the world by word and deed.
Serving Through the Worship Team
Music and media are central to Sunday worship, and the church welcomes new volunteers to the worship team. Singers, instrumentalists, and people with technical skills in sound, slides, or video are all invited to participate. Members who do not have a musical gift can still serve behind the scenes, and the team is an open door into the rhythms of Sunday morning.
The Historic Stanchfield Baptist Cemetery
Just outside the church grounds lies the Historic Stanchfield Baptist Cemetery, established in 1876 and laid out across land settled by the original Swedish immigrants. Many of the very first people from Sweden to make their homes in and around Stanchfield rest here. Walking the rows of plots is described by the church as a stroll through history, and a self-guided tour, along with a plot location list, helps visitors identify specific graves. Cemetery rules are simple and clearly posted: no ground-planted flowers, no permanent installations without permission, and visiting hours during daylight only. The cemetery sexton, Robert Betsinger, oversees plot arrangements and ongoing maintenance.
Growing in Scripture Together
Bible reading is treated as a foundation of the Christian life, and the church offers a handful of structured plans to help members work through the entire Bible in a year. Options include a chronological plan that moves from Creation to Revelation, a book-at-a-time plan that alternates Old and New Testament reading, four printed bookmarks that fit directly into a Bible, a thematic plan that ties Old and New Testament passages together, and a one-page weekly plan for those who prefer something portable.
Giving and Staying Connected
Gifts to the church can be made online through a secure giving service or given in person. The full events calendar, Bible reading plan library, and weekly worship recordings are linked from the church's online presence, so members near and far can keep in step with the life of the congregation.
