About St Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox

A Growing Orthodox Community on Jay Road

Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church sits at 5640 Jay Road in Boulder, Colorado, where it serves as a home for Orthodox Christians on the Front Range. The parish belongs to the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver, the regional body of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America that oversees communities across the Rocky Mountain West. The church's mission statement captures its self-understanding in a single sentence: "Striving together to be a beacon for the Holy Orthodox Tradition through Christian love, worship, repentance, and service to the Heavenly Kingdom."

The parish describes itself as a growing community that welcomes everyone to join in prayer and fellowship. Visitors who are new to Orthodox worship are invited to attend any service and to read a "Where Am I" visitor's guide before arriving so that the Divine Liturgy is easier to follow. The church building is reached by RTD Route 205, and parish office hours run Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Fr. Gabriel McHugh and the Parish Family

The parish is led by Fr. Gabriel McHugh, who was assigned as head priest effective January 1, 2023, by His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver. Fr. Gabriel was raised in Santa Rosa, California, and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Sonoma State University in 2015. He moved east to attend Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Boston, where he also completed a master's in mathematics, taught middle school math at St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Christian School, and taught freshman math at Hellenic College. He graduated from Holy Cross with a Master of Divinity in May 2020, then moved to Loveland with his family to serve the parish of St. Spyridon. He was ordained to the diaconate on October 25, 2020, and to the priesthood on February 27, 2021. He and his wife, Presbytera Mercy, have four children named Joseph, Lydia, Mary, and Catherine. In his free time, Fr. Gabriel enjoys hiking and practicing Byzantine chant. He can be reached at frgabriel@stspeterandpaulboulder.org, and a meeting scheduler is offered through the parish's online platform.

Saturday Vespers and the Sunday Divine Liturgy

Worship follows the traditional Orthodox rhythm. On Saturday evenings the parish gathers for Vespers at 5:00 p.m., the appointed prayer of the eleventh hour that prepares the faithful for the Lord's Day. On Sunday morning, Orthros begins at 8:30 a.m. and the Divine Liturgy follows at 9:30 a.m. Orthros is the matins service of psalms, hymns, and scripture readings; the Divine Liturgy is the Eucharistic celebration at the center of Orthodox Sunday life. Fr. Gabriel offers a series of recorded Divine Liturgy Lessons that walk through the service in detail, explaining the prayers, the gestures, and the theology behind each part of worship.

Services are livestreamed on the parish's YouTube channel, allowing the sick, traveling, or homebound to pray along. The parish calendar, which can be subscribed to in Google Calendar, lists the full weekly schedule as well as feast-day additions. Confession is offered by appointment and on dates listed on the online calendar.

Catechism, Bible Study, and the "Alive in Christ" Podcast

Formation in the faith is taken seriously at Sts. Peter & Paul. Fr. Gabriel hosts adult education classes and Bible studies throughout the year and shares the audio through his podcast, Alive in Christ, which is available from the parish's audio page. Past recordings cover the Divine Liturgy, the Sunday lectionary, and the basics of Orthodox belief. A small online library of Helpful Articles supports newcomers who want to learn what Orthodox Christians believe before stepping into the nave. Visitors are pointed toward a few well-known Orthodox podcasts and blogs (Ancient Faith, Patristic Nectar, and others) for deeper reading.

The parish publishes weekly bulletins, the PetranewS, that follow the Orthodox liturgical calendar, naming each Sunday after its appointed Gospel reading, the cross, or a particular saint of the cycle.

Sunday School for the Youngest

Children attend Sunday School alongside the Divine Liturgy, with families signing up through an online registration form. Parishioners are invited to take turns providing Sunday snacks for the students. The program introduces children to the prayers, the church calendar, and the stories of the saints in an age-appropriate setting. For the older youth, the parish hosts community nights and seasonal events such as the Akathist to St. Olga and an annual parish pilgrimage to St. Paisius Monastery in the mountains.

Philoptochos: Friends of the Poor

The parish's women lead a chapter of the National Philoptochos Society, the Greek Orthodox philanthropic organization whose name means "friends of the poor." Philoptochos works across Boulder County to assist those in need through time, talent, and treasure, supporting local charities and the charitable work of the Metropolis. Each year the chapter runs a membership drive; of every stewardship contribution, $22 is forwarded to National and Denver Metropolis Philoptochos, with the remainder sustaining the local chapter. Members gather after Sunday services and meet regularly to coordinate outreach. New members are welcomed through a simple membership form available in the narthex.

Stewardship, Giving, and Staying Connected

The parish sustains itself through the annual Stewardship commitment of its members. Active stewards complete a yearly card that lists both their financial offering and the talents they are willing to share, allowing the parish to plan ministries and worship for the year ahead. Online giving is available through the parish's donate page. Anyone who wants to keep up with announcements can join the parish mailing list or subscribe to the public Google Calendar, which lists weekly services, feast days, and special observances.

The Patron Apostles Peter and Paul

The parish takes its name from the two great apostles celebrated together on June 29. Peter, the Galilean fisherman called by Christ to be a fisher of men, denied his Lord three times before the Passion, received forgiveness after the Resurrection, and eventually was crucified upside down in Rome under Nero. Paul, the Roman citizen from Tarsus once known as Saul, was struck down on the road to Damascus and transformed into the Apostle to the Nations, whose fourteen epistles still form a cornerstone of Christian Scripture. Both met their martyrdom in Rome, and the church proclaims them together as "first in prominence among the Apostles and teachers of the Universe." Their kontakia and apolytikia, sung on the parish's patronal feast, ask the two chiefs of the apostles to intercede for peace in the world and for the mercy of the Master of all upon every soul.
