Founded in 1866 on Sarver Road
St. Paul's Lutheran Church has stood at 409 Sarver Road since 1866, anchoring a stretch of Butler County, Pennsylvania that many in the congregation simply call home. For more than a century and a half, the church has gathered families from Sarver and the surrounding communities around Word and Sacrament. Today the congregation carries a simple mission: St. Paul's Celebrates, Declares, and Demonstrates the Love of God in Jesus Christ to Sarver and the World.
Sunday Morning at St. Paul's
Sunday School runs from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., with classes offered for children and adults. Worship follows at 10:10 a.m. Visitors are welcomed at the front door with a smile, and the congregation describes itself as a "come as you are" gathering - no special dress is required unless someone wants to dress up.
The service itself is steeped in Lutheran liturgy. It opens with meditative music that gives way to a time of confession, followed by the first hymn. Scripture readings, a sermon, and a sermon hymn come next, then the congregation gathers at the Lord's Table to receive Holy Communion. A closing blessing sends worshippers out to share the gospel. Many people linger afterward to keep talking with their church family.
A Founding Congregation of the NALC
St. Paul's is one of the founding congregations of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC), a body that describes its ministry as Christ-Centered, Mission Driven, Traditionally Grounded, and Congregationally Focused. The congregation's core beliefs are summed up in the Historic Creeds and developed more fully in the Lutheran Confessions.
That tradition shapes everything. The mission statement unpacks three verbs. Celebrates means remembering what God has done and being fed through Word and Sacrament. Declares means keeping the story of how Jesus saves at the center of congregational life, paraphrasing 1 Peter 2:9 about declaring "the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light." Demonstrates means putting the gospel into word and deed, what the congregation calls "the unlimited generosity of God."
Ministry with Children and Youth
Children are woven into the life of the church from a young age. Sunday School meets each week at 9:00 a.m., Vacation Bible School is offered in a special season, and the preschool gives the youngest learners a daily grounding in Bible lessons and kindergarten readiness.
Middle schoolers in grades 6 through 8 participate in Confirmation instruction along with fellowship activities. High school students are beginning to gather in small groups, service projects, and fun activities in the community. Families looking to learn more are invited to reach out to Pastor Shawn.
Adults in Study, Song, and Service
Adults at St. Paul's have a full slate of weekly and monthly ways to connect. Sunday School classes meet alongside the children's program at 9:00 a.m., mid-week Bible studies offer another chance to dig into Scripture, and a ladies' guild gathers women for fellowship and service. The church choir supports worship each Sunday morning and welcomes new voices.
Throughout the year, the fellowship ministry organizes a pig roast, a Seder Meal, a graduation celebration, concerts, and other congregational events.
Worship and Music at the Center
A Worship and Music committee plans services, recruits musicians, and organizes the laypeople who make the liturgy work. Ushers, greeters, communion assistants, communion families, lay assistants, lay readers, sacristy servers, and acolytes all serve on a rotating basis, and the committee is always glad to add more names to its roster.
Reaching Out from Sarver
Outreach and Benevolence is one of the busiest branches of ministry at St. Paul's, reflecting the conviction that the church does not exist for itself alone. Partners and missions supported by the congregation include:
- TryLife, a local youth and family ministry
- Kids Against Hunger, which packs nutritious meals for people in crisis
- Water Missions, providing clean water in developing countries
- Living in Liberty, an outreach to the persecuted
- NALC ministries, the denomination's wider mission work
- The Cabot Food Bank, serving neighbors in the next town over
An Evangelism committee works alongside Outreach to welcome first-time visitors, follow up with them after their first Sunday, run membership classes, and offer evangelism training so that members feel ready to invite others.
St. Paul's Preschool
Just across the parking lot from the sanctuary, St. Paul's Preschool meets the social, educational, and spiritual needs of children ages 3, 4, and 5. The program is led by Director and teacher Lenya Young, along with Kendra Smith, Katherine Booth, and Gwen Wadding.
Classes include a Tuesday/Thursday 3-year-old program (9:00 to 11:30 a.m.), a Monday/Wednesday/Friday 4- and 5-year-old class, and a five-day-a-week Pre-K program (9:00 to 11:30 a.m.). Bible-centered lessons, arts and crafts, dramatic play centers, field trips, parent-teacher conferences, class parties, a Christmas program, and a closing graduation program round out the year. The preschool can be reached at 724-859-5151.
Leadership and Giving
Pastor Shawn Smith leads the congregation, supported by a church council made up of elected officers and committee chairs. Worship services are livestreamed on YouTube for those who cannot attend in person. Giving is available online through Tithe.ly or by mail at PO Box 128, Sarver, PA 16055.
