A Mission Born from Saint James'
Saint Martin's Episcopal Church sits on Saint Martin's Lane in the western Henrico County portion of Richmond, Virginia, and traces its origins to a mission conceived by the Vestry of Saint James' Episcopal Church in Richmond. The parish grew from that vision into a congregation that today gathers members from across the region for Christ-centered worship in the Anglican tradition, the receiving of Holy Eucharist, and Christian formation for every age.
Two Sunday Services, Two Settings
Sunday worship at Saint Martin's comes in two forms. At 8:00 AM, the congregation gathers for a spoken Holy Eucharist - a service without music that the church describes as ideal for quiet contemplation. At 10:00 AM, the liturgy is sung with the full choir and organ, offering a richer musical setting for those who prefer a celebratory worship.
A Wednesday 10:00 AM Holy Communion service adds a midweek rhythm of prayer and sacrament. Compline, the traditional close-of-day office from the Book of Common Prayer, is offered nightly at 8:00 PM, and all services are livestreamed on the church's YouTube channel for those who cannot attend in person.
Christian Education for Every Age
Christian Education is a central part of the weekly schedule. On Sundays, children ages two and under may attend the nursery, while children ages two through pre-K take part in Children's Chapel. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited into the Sunday School program, and each Sunday includes a children's sermon within the liturgy. Vacation Bible School is held for one week in June, available to children from pre-K through fifth grade.
Middle and high schoolers belong to the Episcopal Youth Community (EYC), which gathers twice a month after the 10:00 AM service for lunch, Bible study, and outdoor games such as kickball. An adult discussion group meets on Wednesday evenings for conversation around current events and topical Bible studies, and a Men's Group gathers on the second Saturday of each month at 9:00 AM at Nick's Roman Terrace Restaurant for fellowship and discussion of contemporary events, while also pitching in on parish projects.
Sacraments and Music
Saint Martin's celebrates the two great sacraments of the Episcopal Church - Holy Baptism and Holy Eucharist - and hosts weddings and funerals as part of parish life. The music program supports both Sunday liturgies and special services, with choir rehearsal typically held on Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM.
The Saint Martin's Project and Community Outreach
Outreach is a year-round commitment. The Saint Martin's Project is a weekly mission in which parishioners prepare and deliver sandwiches to several local shelters. The Outreach Committee evaluates charities and community organizations to support, with partnerships including the Evelyn D. Reinhart Guest House. The Tuckahoe Moose Lodge 1163 has also contributed to support a youth service trip.
Communication and Parish Life
Saint Martin's keeps its members connected through The Cloak, a monthly newsletter with issues archived back to 2017, and a weekly email that carries announcements and prayer notes. A photo gallery, a public Google calendar, and committee schedules for acolytes, altar guild, greeters, lay readers, and ushers round out parish life.
The church office can be reached at 804-270-6786 or office@saintmartinschurch.org, and gifts can be given through the donation page. Saint Martin's is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia.
