A Century from a One-Room Schoolhouse
St. Mark Baptist Church, better known across Huntsville simply as Remarkable Church, traces its roots to 1925, when a small congregation began gathering in a one-room schoolhouse in north Alabama. A century later, that single meeting place has grown into a multi-campus ministry with two locations in Huntsville, a Spanish-language congregation called Remarkable Español, a Child Development Center, a nonprofit community development arm, and a livestream that carries worship to screens near and far.
The church describes its purpose in a single sentence: to equip, empower, and encourage one another to live and lead remarkable lives. That word, remarkable, runs through everything from the name of the Sunday worship service to the small-group ministry, the student programs, and a long-term vision called For the Generations that looks ahead to the next hundred years of faith, vision, and resilience.
Worship Across Two Campuses
Sunday worship in Huntsville takes place on two campuses. The North Campus, at 6475 Moores Mill Road NE, hosts the REMARKABLE Worship Experience at 10:00 a.m. The South Campus, at 3250 Dunn Drive SW, gathers for worship at 12:00 p.m. Each service lasts about 75 minutes and is built to be approachable for first-time visitors. There is no required dress code, a parking team meets cars at the lot, and greeters at the front doors help with directions to the sanctuary and restrooms.
Worship is livestreamed each Sunday, and a full archive of previous services is available on the church's YouTube channel, so anyone who wants to catch up, share a sermon, or sample the church before visiting in person can do so without missing a week.
Remarkable Español
A Spanish-language congregation, Remarkable Español, has grown out of the same vision and now serves the Hispanic community of Huntsville. Pastors Nelson and Lianeth Peguero lead the work. The couple came to St. Mark after years of ministry in Venezuela, where they led a youth ministry that grew to more than 500 young people and later pastored a church that expanded from 80 to nearly 800 members. They left professional careers as an accountant and an attorney to give themselves fully to the work of the Kingdom.
At St. Mark they describe their congregation as a family ready for you, and they continue to focus on raising leaders, restoring families, and equipping a new generation through programs that model the heart of God's Kingdom. Communications and announcements for the South Campus appear in both English and Spanish, including materials about the spiritual journey and the For the Generations campaign.
The Daily 6:30 and the Rhythm of Prayer
One of the most distinctive rhythms at Remarkable Church is the daily 6:30 a.m. prayer gathering. The church family meets each morning to pray over a daily scripture and prayer point for homes, the church, and the wider community. On Wednesdays the rhythm adds a noon prayer break focused on the church's mission, leaders, and one another, leading straight into the evening Bible study and small groups.
Throughout the year the church sets aside seasons of focused prayer and fasting, including a 21-day spiritual journey with a downloadable devotional that members work through together. A separate Blessings of the Family rhythm encourages households to share a weekly meal and end with a spoken blessing from the head of the household, declaring unity, healing, and favor over every family member.
GROW Groups on Wednesday Nights
Midweek life at St. Mark centers on GROW Groups, small gatherings that meet every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., both in person and online. The acronym points to the rhythm of the groups: Gather, Reflect, Offer, and Walk. Members show up, go deeper into a Bible passage, look for ways to serve, and commit to one another through the ups and downs of life.
Separate GROW Groups meet for women, men, kids, and youth, so every member of the household has a place to belong. The men's group is called Fighting Shadows, the women's group is Real Life. Real Women., and the student and children's groups mirror the same Wednesday rhythm. Online and in-person options make it possible to join from any of the church's campuses or from home.
Forming the Next Generation
Children, students, and young adults each have a designated place in the life of the church.
Remarkable Kidz Church meets every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall on the North Campus and welcomes children from six weeks old through fifth grade. Check-in opens at 9:30 a.m., with early online check-in available each Wednesday through Saturday at 9:00 p.m. A snack is served each week, and parents are asked to flag any allergies at check-in. Children must be at least 18 years old to drop off or pick up.
TRUTH Youth Group (TYG) serves students in grades 6 through 12. The group's goal is to give young people the building blocks for a life of service, free worship, and faith that shifts cultures. TYG also has its own Wednesday GROW Group.
F.O.C.U.S. Ministry reaches university students and young adults ages 18 to 24, helping them navigate the professional, academic, and spiritual transitions of that season.
Across all ages, the church's Child Development Center provides weekday early-education and childcare, a ministry that has been a steady part of the church's outreach for more than three decades.
Remarkable Community Development
Remarkable Community Development is the church's nonprofit outreach arm, working to strengthen the North and South Huntsville community through programs in education, food distribution, senior services, youth development, and crisis response. The organization is rooted in Christian values and places particular emphasis on the African American and Hispanic/Latino communities of Huntsville, with a commitment to dignity and empowerment in every program it offers.
Current and planned programs include childcare and early-education support, senior outreach, food distribution and family resources, community forums and civic engagement, support for local public school educators and families, and crisis response during local emergencies. Future plans at the South Campus also include English-Spanish language classes, after-school programs, hallway and classroom renovations, and expanded camera and online capabilities.
The People Who Lead
Rev. Jeremiah Isaiah Chester serves as Senior Pastor. A graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Fordham University, where he earned a PhD in Religion and Practice, Pastor Chester also teaches as an adjunct professor at Samford and leads the multi-campus congregation that now includes both English and Spanish ministries.
Minister Matthew L. Davis serves as Director of Worship and Creative Arts and Community Life. A native of Brooklyn, New York, and a graduate of the City University of New York-Brooklyn College and George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University, he joined St. Mark after years in worship and youth ministry in Texas. He was ordained in 2023 by Pastor Chester and the St. Mark-Remarkable Church. His guiding scripture is Matthew 5:16: "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your God in Heaven."
Sophia Heulett-Jones has served as Director of Student Ministries since December 2018. A Huntsville native with more than 17 years of experience in children's, youth, and collegiate ministry, she is pursuing a master's degree in family therapy and religious studies and was licensed to the Gospel ministry in June 2022.
Dawn Jones serves as Creative Media Director, leading digital strategy, social media, and storytelling for the church. A Virginia native who has lived in Huntsville for more than a decade, she brings years of multimedia and operations experience to the role.
Pastors Nelson and Lianeth Peguero lead Remarkable Español alongside their four children.
Dr. Clay, who served St. Mark faithfully for 35 years before retiring in December 2014, was named Pastor Emeritus in January 2016 in recognition of the physical and spiritual growth the church experienced under his leadership, including the ministries that became the Child Development Center. He continues to serve as President of Huntsville Bible College and has served multiple tenures as Moderator of the Mallard Creek Baptist Association.
The Next Step
For anyone wanting to learn more, the church offers a self-paced online course called DISCOVERY, designed to walk newcomers through the basics of the Christian faith and the life of St. Mark. Baptism is presented as a public declaration of faith and is offered to anyone who has accepted Christ, with a minimum age of 6 for children. Baby Dedication is available for parents who want to commit their child to the Lord and to the prayerful support of the church family, a moment of blessing distinct from baptism.
A Connect Card lets visitors share their information so a staff member can follow up. Members and newcomers alike are invited to join a serve team, take the MYDESIGN spiritual gifts assessment, and find a GROW Group that fits their season of life. For prayer needs, the Prayer Team receives requests through an online form and follows up with encouragement, and a GriefShare group is also available for those walking through loss.
Giving is offered online through the church's giving platform, and a current capital vision called For the Generations invites the congregation to prepare the way for the next hundred years of ministry, from a new worship center and senior adult day hub to a multipurpose center, children's area renovations, child development enhancements, additional office space, and a new café.
St. Mark Baptist Church is marking a century of ministry in Huntsville, from a one-room schoolhouse in 1925 to a multi-campus, bilingual, and global-reaching congregation today. The story that began with a handful of believers gathering in prayer is still being written, and the people of Remarkable Church are inviting the next generation to pick up the pen.
