Saint Luke's Lutheran Church has stood on North Union Boulevard in Colorado Springs for more than five decades, drawing worshipers who want a Christ-centered, liturgical congregation rooted in the Lutheran Confessions. A member of the North American Lutheran Church, Saint Luke's is known for reverent Sunday worship with Holy Communion, a thriving preschool housed on its campus, and a deep commitment to serving neighbors near and far. The congregation gathers under the motto "Christ-Centered, Rooted in Worship, Growing in Community."
A Liturgical Home for All Generations
Saint Luke's describes itself as a "Christ-centered, liturgical Lutheran church where God's Word is preached, the Sacraments are celebrated, and people of all ages are welcomed into the family of faith." The mission is simple and stated plainly: "To know Christ and make Him known," a calling that shapes everything from Sunday worship to Bible study, fellowship, and outreach.
The congregation is multi-generational by design. Children, youth, families, and singles share the pews alongside newcomers and lifelong Lutherans. The church's welcome reflects the four core values of the North American Lutheran Church: being mission driven, congregationally focused, Christ-centered, and traditionally grounded.
What Sundays and Wednesdays Look Like
The principal worship service is held on Sundays at 9:30 AM, with a midweek service on Wednesdays at 11:30 AM. The Sunday liturgy is liturgical and Scripture-centered, centered on Holy Communion every week. Worship flows from Lutheran liturgy and historic Christian practice, with a blend of organ, choir, hymns, and occasional special music that fills the nave with what the church calls "reverent and joyful" praise. Services last about an hour.
Sermons are preached by the Rev. Melinda Jones, the presiding minister, and her associate, Pastor Phillips. A recorded archive of past sermons is available, and live streams are broadcast on YouTube for those who cannot attend in person. A favorite quote frames the preaching ministry: "The Sermon is simply Jesus walking among the people."
Faith Formation for Every Age
Saint Luke's nurtures growth in God's Word across the lifespan. The Education ministry gathers the congregation around the pastor's classes, Bible study, youth and Confirmation instruction, and Vacation Bible School, with programs designed for every age. The Discipleship & Service team keeps ministry alive through Women's Coffee gatherings, the men's "Dude Tuesday" group, stewardship campaigns, and volunteer teams that support the life of the church.
Fellowship is woven into parish life through coffee after worship, shared meals, and seasonal socials that the congregation calls "the family of God." A pastoral care team offers an open door for support, with home and hospital visits, a prayer chain, weddings, funerals, baptisms, and marriage enrichment as regular ministries.
Music That Enriches Worship
The Music Ministry is one of the most visible expressions of the church's liturgical identity. Under the direction of Katy Mayne, the program includes choir, handbells, organ, piano, ukulele, and soloists who contribute to worship "with the rich variety of instruments called to out in joyful sound," as the music ministry describes itself. Hymns and choral music anchor each Sunday alongside the historic Lutheran liturgical settings.
A Children's Center Born from the Church
Saint Luke's Children's Center has been a ministry of the congregation for more than 30 years, serving Colorado Springs families since 1995. The center operates Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 6 PM, offering full-time care for children from six weeks to five years old and a preschool program for ages three to five, including Universal Preschool (UPK) for kindergarten readiness.
Director Erin Cowan leads a staff of infant, toddler, and preschool teachers in classrooms named by color - Purple, Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, and Orange. Small class sizes, faith stories, chapel time, and whole-child development are the program's hallmarks. The center advertises itself as "Where Faith, Learning, and Love Come Together," with a mission to nurture God's children for faith and life. Tuition is tiered by age, with a 5 percent discount for military families. The center is governed by an advisory committee that reports to the Church Council.
Reaching Beyond the Walls
Saint Luke's tithes 10 percent of its annual budget to ministry beyond its own campus. Locally, the church supports Lutheran Family Services, Marian House, Mercy's Gate, Mosaic, Pikes Peak Academy, The PLACE, the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter, Springs Rescue Mission, and TLC Pharmacy. Nationally and globally, partnerships extend to Lunches for Learning, Samaritan's Purse, the NALC Disaster Response, the SON Network, the World Mission Prayer League, and Water Mission International.
Through prayer, service, and giving, the congregation joins "Christ's mission of healing, teaching, and mercy in Colorado Springs, across the USA, and around the world." Deaconess Kathy Berrill assists with this work, along with pastoral care across the parish.
What to Expect When You Visit
Visitors will find plenty of parking, handicap access, and ushers who are glad to help. Saint Luke's greets newcomers warmly but does not single anyone out or ask visitors to introduce themselves publicly; participation is at each person's own pace. Dress ranges widely, from dresses and suits to jeans and sweaters, and all are welcome.
Children are celebrated in worship. Little voices are considered part of God's house, and families often worship together. Nursery care is available for those who wish to use it. Holy Communion is offered every Sunday; those wondering about their welcome at the table are encouraged to speak with a pastor.
