St. John Lutheran Church in Cypress: Connecting Neighbors to the True Riches in Jesus

Lutheran Church in Fall Creek, Wisconsin

St. John Lutheran Church in Cypress, Texas is an LCMS congregation offering traditional and contemporary Sunday worship, a midweek Wednesday Night Live program for the whole family, and ministries for children, youth, adults, women, men, and seniors.

About St John's Lutheran Church

St. John Lutheran Church is located at 15235 Spring Cypress Road in Cypress, Texas. The congregation's stated mission - connecting our neighbors to the true riches in Jesus - shows up everywhere, from the way greeters welcome visitors at the Worship Center doors to the way midweek Bible studies open their circles. A member congregation of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS), St. John offers two Sunday services in different styles, a packed Wednesday night program, an Early Childhood Education Center accredited by the National Lutheran Schools Accreditation, and a deep bench of small groups for adults, women, men, and young adults. Worship is livestreamed on YouTube, giving those who cannot attend in person a way to keep up with the sermon series.

The Four Shapes of the Mission

The church describes its life around four movements: Celebrate, Live, Serve, and Share. Celebrate happens in Sunday worship, which the church describes as engaging, inspiring, and centered on the hope found in Christ. Live happens in LIVE Groups and Bible studies that meet across the week and across the Cypress area, encouraging one another through God's Word. Serve happens through ministry teams that meet practical needs in the community and through mission trips. Share happens through intentional outreach, with new Neighborhood Groups being developed to meet in homes across the area and reach those seeking friendship and welcome in Jesus' name.

Sundays at 8:15 and 11:00

Sundays at St. John come in two flavors. At 8:15 a.m., a Traditional Worship Service gathers in the Worship Center for those who prefer classic liturgy and hymns. At 11:00 a.m., a Contemporary / Modern Worship Service offers a different feel for those who connect with newer worship songs. Both services share the same sermon series, often titled Follow the Word, in which the preaching walks through the Bible book by book. Recent series have moved through Haggai, Daniel, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Hosea, Jonah, and Habakkuk, with sermons preached by Pastor Kyle Blake, Pastor David Bahn, Pastor Ryan Neuhaus, and Vicar Seth Gehrke. Holy Week services on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are held at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and the 7 p.m. services are livestreamed on YouTube.

Wednesday Night Live: Dinner, Music, and Breakouts

Wednesday Night Live (WNL) is the church's midweek hub for families. The evening runs from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. and starts with Family Dinner at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel. A typical menu cycles between pizza one week, chicken fingers or a baked potato bar the next, with occasional home-cooked meals in between. The cost is $5 per person, payable by cash or card, and parents are asked to be present during dinner for children in fourth grade and below. After dinner, the night opens with music and fun, then breaks into age-specific groups from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. The Nursery takes infants through age 3, kids from age 4 through fourth grade have their own program, fifth and sixth graders meet as a pre-Confirmation group, seventh and eighth graders have Confirmation instruction, and high schoolers gather in the Youth Room inside the Christian Life Center. A Women's Bible Study also meets in Ministry Center 101 during WNL.

Children from the Nursery Through Fourth Grade

St. John's Children's Ministry welcomes children from birth through fourth grade. The Nursery is open Sunday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to noon in the Commons of the Worship Center, staffed by caregivers who provide a safe, nurturing environment while parents attend worship or Bible study. Sunday School gathers children ages 3 through fourth grade from 9:45 to 10:40 a.m. in the Children's Ministry Center, where each week they step into a Bible story, build friendships, and discover what God has done for them in Jesus. During the 11:00 a.m. service, children ages 4 through second grade begin worship with their families, then are dismissed partway through to Kids' Church, where the message is shared in a way that fits their hearts and minds. Kids' Church families meet back together before the service ends. Children can also join the American Heritage Girls and Trail Life troops, which emphasize Christian character in a Christ-centered, Bible-based, camping-themed environment, and the church runs a yearly Vacation Bible School program. Nikkole Cooper directs Children's Ministry.

Junior and Senior Youth: Confirmation and Beyond

Junior Youth covers fifth through eighth grade. On Sunday mornings, fifth and sixth graders meet at 9:30 a.m. in rooms 203 and 205 upstairs in the Christian Life Center, where questions are welcome and friendships grow around God's Word. Confirmation classes for seventh and eighth graders take place Sundays at 9:45 a.m. and again on Wednesdays during WNL, walking students through the basics of the Christian faith from a Lutheran perspective. Fellowship events and mission trips round out the year. Sarah Valencia coordinates youth ministry. Senior High (ninth through twelfth grade) meets Sundays from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. in the Youth Room inside the Christian Life Center for Bible study, teaching, prayer, and fellowship. Students can join the high school worship band, attend hangouts, and participate in mission trips and national youth events. WNL on Wednesday nights hosts them as well, with dinner starting at 6:00 p.m. and a breakout session just for high schoolers.

Adults in Biblical Community

Adults at St. John are encouraged to join LIVE Groups, the church's umbrella for small groups and Bible studies. On Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m., the Follow the Word study meets in several rooms around campus - Ministry Center 104, the Chapel, Admin 101, and Christian Life Center 112 - each led by a different lay leader. A Discovery Bible Study meets in Worship Center 101. Online Bible studies and groups for specific seasons of life round out the calendar. A parenting class, open to any adult with a child of any age, focuses on Biblical parenting principles and helps parents disciple their children and grow closer to Jesus together. The Neighbors Group initiative is in development, with a vision of small groups meeting in homes and defined by intentional invitations to neighbors who are seeking friendship and welcome in Jesus' name.

Women's Bible Studies and Mission

The Women's Ministry offers several studies throughout the week. A Wednesday night Bible study in Ministry Center 101 has worked through Jennie Allen's Find Your People under the title Trustworthy, exploring God's design for community. Tuesdays and Wednesdays host Jesus & Women: In the First Century and Now, an eight-session study with biblical culturalist Kristi McLelland led by Celeste May in Ministry Center 104, with Tuesday meetings from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday meetings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Becky's Hosea study, God's Relentless Love, is an eight-week walk through the prophet Hosea, hosted at a leader's home on Wednesday afternoons. Sisters in Service, a women's missional group, meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in Admin 101 in the Administration Center for fellowship, refreshments, Bible study, and a short meeting.

Men's Ministry: Theology on Tap and Retreats

Men's Ministry centers on Theology on Tap, a Monday-night gathering from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at PO's (next to Creekwood Grill at 12710 Telge Road, Cypress). Studies rotate between books of the Bible and topical video studies; food and beverages are available, and the group shares prayer requests by email. Ron Angst coordinates Theology on Tap. The Men of God Retreat takes the men off-site each year - the spring retreat was held at Camp Lone Star in La Grange, Texas, with Rev. Dr. Bob Gehrke as guest speaker and an auction supporting St. John youth. Men's mission trips are also part of the rhythm, with updates shared through Seth Gehrke.

The Kitchen Table for Young Adults

Young adults have their own gathering called The Kitchen Table, led by Tracie Omlie. It meets Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. in CLC 203 (inside the Christian Life Center) and started with a nine-week study through Get Used to Different: A Student Guide to The Chosen, blending Scripture, discussion, personal reflection, and clips from the show to explore identity, belonging, following Jesus in everyday life, and trusting Him through good and difficult seasons. Tuesday-night young-adult hangouts at homes around the area round out the rhythm.

Care and Support for Every Season

A web of care and support groups wraps around the rest of the church. Joyful Stretchers meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. in Worship Center 101 for seniors and any adults who want a short devotion followed by low-impact stretching, led by Mark Simmang. Walking the Mourner's Path is a grief support program led by Joie Folkers. A new Cancer Support Group meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in Ministry Center 104; it begins in a large group and then divides into two smaller circles - one for those experiencing cancer, one for caregivers - for honest conversation, prayer, and mutual encouragement. Stephen Ministry complements these groups with one-on-one Christ-centered care provided by trained laypeople; Karen Neitzke coordinates Stephen Ministry.

St. John Early Childhood Education Center

St. John Early Childhood Education Center (St. John ECC) is an accredited preschool program, holding National Lutheran Schools Accreditation. Classes serve children from 18 months through 5 years old, including an optional Bridge class that gives children an extra year of growth in social, emotional, academic, and motor skills before starting kindergarten. Curriculum includes Bible teaching, language arts, math, science, social studies, music and motor skills, Spanish, library, and art, all in a Christ-centered, nurturing environment. The center's mission goes beyond academics - they describe their work as "Educating for Eternity."

Lutheran Identity and the Missouri Synod

St. John is a member congregation of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS), a denomination rooted in the sixteenth-century Reformation. The church teaches that life is better when connected to God and to one another, and they express their Lutheran convictions through worship centered on the hope found in Christ, biblical community that encourages one another through God's Word, and service that shares Jesus' love in practical ways. Elders serve as spiritual shepherds who support the pastors by caring for members organized by family last name, visiting the sick, and praying for those with concerns. The church practices Baptism and Confirmation as central sacraments and milestones of faith, and the entire congregation is currently walking through the Bible together in a year-long reading plan called Follow the Word, beginning and ending the year with the Gospels so that the life of Christ remains first and foremost in view.

Pastors, Vicar, and Ministry Leaders

The pastoral team includes Pastor Mark Pulliam, the senior pastor whose "Pastor Mark's List of Life Lessons" sermon has shaped the church's discipleship emphasis, along with Pastor Kyle Blake, Pastor David Bahn, and Pastor Ryan Neuhaus. Vicar Seth Gehrke preaches regularly and leads adult ministry initiatives, including Neighborhood Groups and men's missions. Additional pastors who have served the pulpit include Pastor Aaron Gehrke, Pastor Bob Gehrke, Pastor Brad Jurischk, Pastor David Kim, Pastor Gene Johnson, Pastor Kevin Hintze, and Pastor Michael Meissner, along with Rev. Dr. Jon Braunersreuther and Rev. John Cain. Nikkole Cooper directs Children's Ministry and Sarah Valencia directs Youth Ministry. Dozens of Elders, organized by family last name, serve the congregation in groups from A to Z, supporting the pastors in prayer, encouragement, and presence.
