Saint John Neumann Catholic Church is at 6680 Crestway Drive in San Antonio and serves as a Catholic community in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The parish is known for a worship life centered on the Word and Eucharist, including a Spanish Sunday Mass, Mass four mornings each week, extended Eucharistic adoration, formation for children and adults, and practical care for older adults, homebound parishioners, and people in need. Its mission joins meditation on God's Word with celebration of the Eucharist, faithful use of spiritual gifts, unity in the Body of Christ, service to those in need, and a response to the universal call to holiness.
Mass Across the Week and Sunday Morning
Mass is celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, and at 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. The 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass is in Spanish. The parish office at 6680 Crestway Drive is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Parish registration is available in an online form or a printable form that may be brought to the office, mailed, or placed in the offertory basket at Mass.
The Liturgy Committee oversees the dignity and decorum of the liturgical year, from the Holy Week Triduum through Sunday Mass, Penance Services, and devotions. Music is a regular part of worship, with a different choir for each Sunday Mass; singers and instrumentalists are welcome, and singers do not need to read music. Parish ushers greet people as they enter, while boys and girls who have made First Communion may serve at the altar at Sunday and Holy Day Masses, weddings, and funerals. Their preparation emphasizes dependability, neat dress, and a mature, reverent manner.
Adoration, Reconciliation and the Rosary
Eucharistic Adoration takes place in the chapel from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the Blessed Sacrament exposed in the monstrance. The parish understands this as a real presence of Jesus Christ and describes the hour of prayer as a way to deepen Divine Peace. Weekly sign-ups are available for time spent in prayer, reading the Bible, reciting the Rosary, or sitting quietly with Christ.
Reconciliation is offered Wednesday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. and Saturday from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m., with appointments also available during office hours. The Rosary Ministry gathers in the church at 11:00 a.m. on weekdays to pray for sick parishioners and for relatives and friends. During May and October, the months dedicated to the Blessed Lady, the group also gathers at 7:00 p.m. from Sunday through Friday.
Faith Formation from RCIA to Home Groups
RCIA, the formal process of preparing adults for full membership in the Catholic Church, meets every Wednesday from August through May at 7:00 p.m. in the Scott Room of the Family Center. It welcomes adults who are curious about Catholic teaching, preparing to become Catholic, or seeking to receive sacraments they have not yet received. Its communal pattern of prayer, faith sharing, doctrine, service, and friendship is part of the process.
Bible Study includes three groups meeting on different days, while Longing for the Holy is a small faith sharing group that meets twice a month for 90 minutes in people's homes. Groups exist in English and Spanish, with meeting times adapted to their needs, and twice a year they join for prayer, the Liturgy of the Word, and shared reflection. The Evangelization Committee also oversees CCD, workshops, seminars, talks, retreats, and home visits, with Ysabel Alvarez serving as its point of contact.
ACTS retreats are presented by fellow parishioners over three days and three nights. Talks and activities focus on Adoration, Community, Theology, and Service, using Scripture and Catholic Church teaching to deepen prayer, fellowship, and service to God, the parish, and one another.
Parishioners can create a FORMED account with zip code 78239 and select St. John Neumann to access movies, programs, audio, and books. A myParish app provides parish updates, daily Mass readings, MassMode reminders, and quick access to parish contacts.
Sacraments and Family Milestones
Baptisms are generally held on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, with no more than five children in a session, and parents are expected to be registered parishioners. The religious education program prepares second grade children for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Families with children beyond second grade make special preparation arrangements, and parents or guardians attend a required annual meeting. Students in the parish program begin Confirmation preparation in ninth grade and follow a course lasting two years.
Marriage arrangements are made at least six months before the wedding, and the priest offers Anointing of the Sick to elderly and seriously ill people. Bereavement Ministry provides comfort and hope to grieving families and assists the pastor with funeral planning, the Vigil before burial, readings for the services, and the luncheon after Mass. These ministries keep sacramental care connected to the life of the parish community.
Children, Youth and Family Life
Elementary Religious Education serves children from kindergarten through fifth grade. The Children's Ministry supports families in passing on Catholic faith and preparing children to celebrate Eucharist and Reconciliation for the first time. Families are asked to register children for Faith Formation, celebrate Sunday Eucharist together, participate in parish events, and share their faith at home.
Youth@SJN serves all middle and high school students from sixth through twelfth grade. Its work focuses on total personal and spiritual growth and draws young people into responsible participation in the faith community's life, mission, and work. The ministry presents Life Teen as a way to lead teens toward an active relationship with the Lord, appreciation of Catholic faith, and a stronger focus on the Mass. Blanca Rocha is the named contact for Youth@SJN.
The Family Life Committee strengthens both the parish and the home through parenting workshops, bereavement activities, seminars on relationships and challenges, a Ministry Fair, and appreciation events; Maggie Medina is its point of contact. The local Catholic Daughters of the Americas court, Daughters of Our Lady of Fatima, Court 2596, was established at the parish in 2007. It donates to charities, administers scholarships, and follows the motto Unity and Charity. Its members also join parish and community service.
Care for Homebound Adults and Neighbors in Need
Nursing Home and Homebound Ministry serves faithful Catholics who can no longer attend Mass or participate fully in parish life. Visits bring prayer and Communion suited to each situation, linking people who are often hungry for the Lord with a caring parish presence.
St. John Neumann supports Northeast Senior Assistance through an annual donation and volunteer time. NESA helps adults aged 60 and older live independently with dignity by providing escorted transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping and delivery, telephone reassurance, handy helper services, socialization at special events, and information and referrals.
The Life, Peace & Justice Committee works for people at every stage of life, including the unborn, orphans, unemployed people, the poor, older adults, and immigrants. The St. Vincent de Paul Society provides a food pantry, visits people in their homes, and assists with emergency partial payments for utilities, rent, and medical expenses. Its assistance is available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The parish also offers online giving.
Liturgical Service and Catholic Organizations
The Altar Guild prepares the church and everything needed for the Eucharist and other sacraments. Rotating teams meet Monday and Friday for altar duty during their assigned month, care for linens, vestments, altar bread, wine, and holy water, and keep the sanctuary in order for each liturgical season. The guild meets on the first Tuesday of most months at 1:00 p.m. in the Scott Room and raises funds through turkey dinners, bake sales, and holy bears.
Other ministries support the flow of worship. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist with distributing the Body and Blood of Christ; volunteer Lectors learn to proclaim the Word; Baptismal Class teams help parents prepare for a child's Baptism; and the Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy meet after the Friday 11:30 a.m. Mass to study Scripture, the Catechism, Pope John Paul II's encyclical on divine mercy, and the diary of St. Faustina. They pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the sick, the dying, and special intentions.
The Knights of Columbus council provides financial support to the parish and to local and state charities, has supplied volunteers and aid to Habitat for Humanity and local Catholic schools, and supports parish organizations. Catholic men aged 18 and older are invited to join; the council meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Scott Room.
A Family Center Built for Gatherings
The Family Center, located next to the church, includes the Grand Banquet Hall, which seats up to 300 for dining with a dance floor and includes a large stage, full kitchen, walk-in cooler, and commercial ice machine. The Scott Room seats up to 60, the Parma Room up to 50, and the Jupe Room up to 40. The Scott and Parma rooms have dinette kitchens, and all three smaller rooms can be arranged for classes, board meetings, or focused groups. The entire center can support conferences, exhibitions, and breakout sessions. Rentals include personal booking assistance, table and chair setup, breakdown, and cleaning, making the rooms suitable for wedding receptions, showers, special events, and meetings.
These ministries share a common center in the mission of Saint John Neumann: meet spiritual needs through the Word and Eucharist, share the gifts given by the Holy Spirit, build the Body of Christ in unity, and reach those in need. At 6680 Crestway Drive in San Antonio, the parish continues to combine worship, formation, sacraments, service, and shared facilities as one Catholic community in the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
