A Southside Church Centered on Making Disciples
Southport Heights Christian Church sits on McFarland Road in Southport, just south of Indianapolis, and carries the simple motto Loving God, Loving People & Making Disciples. The congregation's stated mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ, and everything from the Sunday schedule to the midweek groups is shaped around that goal. Visitors are welcomed with a straightforward invitation: You are welcome here! Join us on Sundays at 10:30am.
A Sunday Morning Built Around the Gospel
Sunday programming begins at 9:00 a.m. with Sunday School for all ages and a youth hour called Current for middle and high school students. The main gathering follows at 10:30 a.m. The service is fairly straightforward: the church sings both traditional and contemporary music, hears a Biblically-based sermon, and takes communion together (referred to as the Lord's Supper). First-time guests are met with open arms, shown where to go, and pointed toward a free cup of coffee. A short video walks newcomers through what to expect.
Kids and Students at Every Stage
Children are a clear priority at SHCC. The Kids Ministry serves kids from birth through fifth grade with age-appropriate programming during the Sunday morning schedule, and the church invites families to learn more through a dedicated Kids Ministry page. Older students have their own space: Current is the ministry name for sixth through twelfth graders and meets at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays for teaching and connection aimed at middle and high schoolers.
Small Groups as the Foundation
The leadership team describes small groups as the foundation of the church's disciple-making work, not just another program. Groups meet regularly to study God's Word, share life's good and bad times, and walk through it together. The church believes relational community is the most effective context for spiritual growth, and newcomers are encouraged to explore the current small group options through the Next Steps area of the church's online hub.
A Women's Ministry that Builds Connection
The Women's Ministry is described as a great way for ladies to connect and grow together. It exists alongside the church's broader mission to help people belong to a relational family on mission, and women are invited to learn more through the ministry's own information card.
Serving the Neighborhood: Food Pantry
Faithfully serving the community is the way SHCC describes its Food Pantry ministry. The pantry is one of the church's practical expressions of loving neighbors beyond the walls of the building and is featured among the church's regular ministries.
Deaf Ministry: Hearing the Words of the Scroll
The church's Deaf Ministry points to Isaiah 29:18, the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, as its anchor verse. The ministry is designed to include and serve members and visitors who are deaf, reflecting the church's belief that there is a place for everyone no matter where they are on their spiritual journey.
What the Church Believes
At the heart of Southport Heights Christian Church is the confession that Jesus Christ is Lord. The church expresses a desire to trust and follow Jesus to the glory of God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit. A fuller Statement of Faith is available for anyone who wants to read more about what the church teaches.
