A Community of Believers on West Chicago Street
South Canyon Baptist Church is at 3333 W Chicago St in Rapid City, South Dakota 57702, on the top of the hill just off the corner of W Chicago Road and Sturgis Road, next to the fire station. The church describes itself as a community of believers passionate about growing in faith, serving others and sharing the love of Jesus Christ, and its motto is direct: “Connecting People to Jesus in Rapid City.” Its mission is to connect people to God, nurture spiritual growth and equip individuals to make a difference in their families, community and the world. In the church's own terms, the goal is to make disciples of Jesus Christ who love God, love people and impact the world for His glory.
That goal shapes the whole week. Sunday starts with Bible study called Life Classes and moves into a worship gathering. Wednesday evenings hold a fellowship dinner followed by separate gatherings for children, students and adults. The same conviction guides the church's mission work, which concentrates money and energy on a small set of local ministries and missionaries considered strategically placed. Discipleship is not only a slogan at South Canyon Baptist; it describes the classes, the worship service, the children's rooms and the partners the church funds.
Life Classes at 9 AM, Worship at 10:30 AM
Sunday mornings follow a settled order. Life Classes run from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, and worship begins at 10:30 AM, usually ending around 11:45 AM. The classes are content focused, and the church grounds that choice in Romans 12:2, where believers are called not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewal of the mind so that by testing they may discern the will of God. Sunday morning classes are designed to equip the minds of believers with essential truths that will empower them to live effective gospel lives, emphasizing equipping, training and informing for Christian living. Classes are divided into four quarters during the school year, with a break in the summer.
Families have time to settle in before the service. Coffee and donuts are served starting at 10:00 AM in the Family Life Center, and the Mission Cafe is open from 10:00 to 10:30 AM. The gap between classes and worship gives parents a chance to take younger children to their age-graded rooms and then join the congregation.
What the Worship Gathering Sounds Like
On most weeks the worship band opens the gathering by leading three worship songs, a combination of newer worship songs and older ones. A scripture reading or a time of prayer follows. Younger children are dismissed to Children's Church after the opening songs, and one of the pastors preaches a practical message from the Bible for about 30 to 45 minutes. The gathering ends with a closing song and a benediction. During the summer, when Life Classes take a break, Sunday morning worship runs from 10:30 AM until about 12:00 PM, with the Mission Cafe open from 10:00 to 10:30 AM.
The church keeps weekly music playlists on Spotify, including a “This Week @ SCBC” playlist and a “Worship @ SCBC” playlist, and it maintains an archive of sermons along with a YouTube channel.
Growing Little Disciples: Kids at South Canyon
The children's ministry exists to partner with parents in raising their children by creating a secure, loving and fun environment where kids can learn and follow Jesus for a lifetime. The aim is a sense of church family in which parents and children walk through all of life together, especially raising children in the Lord. Every part of children's ministry is meant to point children to the gospel and the good news of what Jesus Christ has done for them, bringing them into a full relationship with God for eternity.
Kids Life Classes are Sunday small-group Bible studies for preschool through 5th grade, meeting from 9:00 to 10:00 AM during the school year, with summer break excluded. The classes work through the Generations of Grace curriculum at age-appropriate levels. All children's classes are on the east side of the building, to the left of the main lobby doors: the 3- and 4-year-olds in room 123, kindergarten and first graders in room 125, second and third graders in room 202 upstairs, and fourth and fifth graders in room 203 upstairs. Middle and high school students meet in the Youth Room, room 132.
Children's Church happens during the main worship gathering. Children sing two or three age-appropriate worship songs together, hear a short Bible story from one of the church's storytellers, and then break into small groups for activities that reinforce the lesson, led by an adult and student leaders. Children ages 2 to 3 meet in room 107, and children ages 4 through kindergarten meet in the main Children's Church room. During the gathering, children spend their first 15 to 20 minutes with their parents before being dismissed by someone from the stage.
Nursery Care and the Kids Check-In Center
Nursery care is available at both the Life Class hour and the worship hour for children from birth through age two. It sits on the northeast corner of the building, to the left around the corner as families enter the front doors. The Kids Check-In Center is just to the left of the main lobby doors, and volunteers there answer questions, help families check in and escort children to the nursery and children's areas.
All nursery volunteers are background checked and approved by the church's Caring Well team. Parents follow a security sticker check-in process, and children are released only to an adult presenting the matching sticker. Families receive a pager at check-in; if it vibrates, the parent returns to the nursery immediately. Nursery staff cannot feed meals from home or administer medications, so parents bring pull-ups for children in the process of toilet training. Toys from home stay home. Staff comfort children as appropriate, and a parent is paged if a child cannot be consoled in a reasonable time. A children's ministry manual covers the various areas of children's ministry for parents and volunteers.
Thrive Student Ministry: You. Me. Us.
The student ministry, Thrive, focuses on equipping 6th through 12th grade students to live the life that Jesus promises to all who trust in Him, drawing on John 10:10: “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” The goal is for every student to know what God has done for them in Christ and to live a thriving life that glorifies Him.
Thrive meets Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 8:30 PM in the Youth Room, at the back of the building connected to the gym. Middle School and High School Life Classes also meet on Sundays at 9:00 AM.
The ministry takes seriously the Bible's call for parents and guardians to be the primary disciple-makers of their children. As the church puts it, parents are the main diet and the student ministry is the vitamin supplement: parents are primary, and the ministry is secondary. Even so, Thrive offers counsel, prayer, encouragement and training to families. Student Ministry meetings inform parents about what the ministry is doing and why, and invite feedback. The church tries to offer a weekend parenting seminar each year and an eight-week Sunday morning Life Class on parenting each spring. The larger aim is to build friendships and church family around each student and parent. Announcements to students go out through Sunday morning and Sunday night events, text, email, Instagram and Facebook.
Adult Life Classes and Wednesday Nights
Adults study together on Sunday mornings in Life Classes, described as faith, fellowship and growth. The classes are content focused for the same reason as the children's and student classes: they are meant to equip, train and inform for the Christian life, and they run in four quarters through the school year with a summer break. Wednesday evenings keep the same pattern going. The church opens with a fellowship dinner at 5:15 PM, then Canyon Kids Club and Canyon Student Ministry both begin at 6:00 PM, and the Adult Devotional & Prayer Meeting follows at 6:15 PM.
The Mission Care Team: Local Partners and Global Mission
South Canyon Baptist's mission team gives of its finances and energy to serve beyond the walls of the church. Rather than spreading support widely, the church says it has a strong conviction to focus its efforts on a handful of strategic partners locally and globally, because God calls every local church to specific priorities of care. The practical emphasis is on caring for widows and orphans and the poor in the immediate Rapid City community. The mission team states that the proclamation of the gospel must always be central to ministry that meets material need, rather than one being pursued at the expense of the other.
Local partners include the Redeeming Grace Church Plant, Cornerstone Rescue Mission, the Black Hills Pregnancy Center, Love Inc. of the Black Hills and Creator's Fellowship. The global side of the team's work supports the International Mission Board and Teaching Truth International as missionaries, along with the ministries of Grace Mission and International Students Inc. These partnerships are chosen selectively and strategically, with attention to people groups in difficult and unreached places and a focus on establishing and strengthening local churches. The reasoning is simple in the team's own words: the local church is God's plan A for the sustained spread of the gospel, and there is no plan B.
What South Canyon Baptist Church Believes
The church's Statement of Faith begins from the conviction that it affirms the faith once for all delivered to God's people and the truths that have united Christ-followers since the beginning of the church. The Bible is affirmed as the sixty-six book word of God, complete, trustworthy, sufficient and without error, and as the supreme authority for doctrine, conduct and religious opinion. God is affirmed as one living and true God, eternal and triune, revealed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Humanity is affirmed as a special creation made in God's image, male and female, and every person as unique, dignified and worthy of respect. All human life is described as sacred, including pre-born babies, the aged and the physically or mentally challenged. The church's statement on marriage, gender and sexuality holds that God creates each person as male or female, that marriage is the union of one man and one woman, and that sexual intimacy belongs within that marriage, while also calling every person to compassion, love, kindness, respect and dignity and promising redemption and restoration to those who confess and forsake sin.
Salvation is affirmed as wholly of grace through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ alone, received as a free gift, with the new birth, justification, sanctification, perseverance of the saints and final glorification described in biblical terms. The church is described as an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers associated by covenant, observing two ordinances, baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper. Leadership is described as biblical officers of pastors and elders, with a plurality of qualified elders and deacons assisting them to meet physical needs, and the congregation exercising authority through affirmation and formal votes. The statement closes with the return of Christ, religious liberty, the duty of every church to make disciples of all nations, and the final interpretive authority of the Council of Elders for matters of doctrine not specifically addressed.
Your First Sunday at 3333 West Chicago Street
Parking is available on all sides of the building. The primary lot is on the north side, the most visible area from W Chicago Road, and two front doors there lead straight into the lobby. Dress is relaxed: the range runs from jeans and t-shirts to suits and ties, and the most common attire is jeans with a polo or button-up shirt. The church asks visitors to focus on the gathering rather than on what they are wearing.
Inside, friendly faces greet people at the doors and point them in the right direction, whether they are checking a child in, grabbing coffee from the Mission Cafe or heading for the auditorium. Children in first grade and above stay in the main worship gathering with the congregation, and children's bulletins are available in the lobby as families enter. Giving is intended for members and regular attenders, and guests are not expected to give an offering; those who wish to give can use the offering drop box at the Connect Desk. Giving is available online through Church Center, which handles online gifts, event registrations and more, and by text. An offering opportunity is part of the service itself.
The church's phone number is (605) 342-9000, the office email is office@southcanyonbaptist.org, and the address for visits is 3333 W Chicago St, Rapid City, SD 57702. Guests with questions before they arrive can plan a visit, and church-wide email updates carry news, events and announcements.
South Canyon Baptist Church organizes its life around four areas for people who want to belong: Kids, Students, Adults and Mission. At 3333 West Chicago Street in Rapid City, that means Life Classes and worship on Sunday, a fellowship dinner and three gatherings on Wednesday, classrooms full of children learning the gospel, students equipped for life in Christ, adults trained for effective gospel living, and a mission team that puts its resources behind a small circle of local ministries and global partners. The aim remains what the church states plainly: connecting people to Jesus in Rapid City, nurturing spiritual growth and equipping people to make a difference in their families, community and the world.
