Smyrna Baptist Church: A Fundamental Baptist Church on Pensacola Boulevard
Smyrna Baptist Church sits on Pensacola Boulevard on the west side of Pensacola, Florida, where it has served as a steady gospel witness for decades. The congregation describes itself as an Independent, Fundamental, Baptist church whose ministries share one purpose: fulfilling the Great Commission of Christ through evangelism and discipleship. Its motto, "Reaching Pensacola for Christ," is matched by a packed weekly calendar, a bus ministry that has rolled through local neighborhoods since 1958, and ministries that span toddlers, military families, teens, and the Spanish-speaking community.
Sunday: Three Services and Sunday School
Sunday is the heart of the week at Smyrna. Sunday School begins at 9:45 AM with classes for every age, and the morning worship service follows at 11:00 AM. The Sunday morning service runs a little over an hour, and after it ends Senior Pastor Bill Adams likes to greet first-time guests personally in the foyer, where ushers are on hand to help newcomers find their way.
The evening brings more activity. Choir and Orchestra Rehearsal starts at 5:00 PM, followed by Special Prayer Meetings at 5:30 PM and the Evening Service at 6:00 PM. During the school year, Master Clubs for children also meets at 6:00 PM, running from September through May.
Wednesday and Thursday Nights
Wednesday evening brings the church together again at 7:00 PM for an Evening Service, with a separate Teen Service running at the same hour for students 7th through 12th grade. On Thursdays, the Revival Prayer Meetings gather at 6:00 PM, offering a midweek time of focused prayer for anyone who wants to come.
Outreach on Wheels: The Bus Ministry
Smyrna's bus ministry has been part of the church's identity since 1958. Every Sunday, buses run up and down the streets of Pensacola and surrounding communities, bringing children, teens, and adults to church who might otherwise have no way to attend. The church describes the bus ministry as one of the greatest evangelistic tools in the history of the local church, and Smyrna has seen countless boys, girls, teens, and adults come to faith through it over the decades. Anyone who needs a ride can request a pickup through the bus contact form, and Bro. Daniel Camara directs the ministry alongside the children's work.
On Monday evenings at 6:30 PM, the church conducts first-time guest visitation, and on the first Saturday of each month at 8:00 AM, volunteers gather for breakfast and then canvas neighborhoods to invite new families and follow up with bus riders. The rest of the month, canvassers visit assigned areas.
Sunday School Classes for Every Age
The Sunday School program at Smyrna runs from infants through senior adults, and almost every class is led by name and paired with a clear age group:

Children's Ministry and Master Clubs
The nursery is open for every service and is staffed by trained workers in a clean, age-appropriate environment with a private area for nursing mothers. Children's Sunday School meets during the 9:45 AM hour with lessons geared to each age group's comprehension level, plus verse memorization and crafts. During the 11:00 AM morning worship service, Children's Church is available for K-5 through 6th grade, with interactive songs, object lessons, games, prizes, and a snack.
Master Clubs is the church's midweek discipleship program for children K-3 through 6th grade. Modeled on scout-style programming but entirely Christ-centered, it uses curriculum from Master Ministries. Children earn badges for Scripture memorization, special projects, and Christian service. Each meeting begins with the pledges to the American flag, the Christian flag, and the Bible, and a key verse, Matthew 23:10 - "For one is your Master, even Christ," is recited together. After singing and devotions, they divide into groups for table time with club leaders and finish with a group game. Badges are awarded once a month during a special game and snack time. Master Clubs runs during the school year, from September through May.
Teen Ministry
The teen ministry, led by Youth Pastor James Tate, is for students in 7th through 12th grade. Teens have their own Sunday School class with Pastor Tate teaching the boys and Mrs. Tate teaching the girls, and they gather again for a separate service at 7:00 PM on Wednesdays. The teaching covers topics with real-world relevance for teens: how to defend the Christian faith in a secular culture, how to apply biblical wisdom to life's big choices, and how to find joy through a relationship with God. Beyond the weekly meetings, teens serve in other ministries around the church and take part in activities throughout the year, including game nights, bowling, ice skating, family fun center outings, youth conference trips, and a MORP night.
Ministerios Hispanos: The Spanish-Language Ministry
The Spanish ministry is led by Pastor Mark Schuler and his wife Susan, who joined Smyrna in 2023 after nearly two decades of full-time Spanish ministry, including eighteen years in Honduras, where they planted a Baptist church and a Christian school. Their goal at Smyrna is to exalt Christ among the Hispanic community in the Pensacola metro area. The Sunday Spanish-language service begins at 10:00 AM and includes transportation for those who need a ride. Wednesday evenings at 6:30 bring a Spanish Bible study, and Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM add a prayer and Bible study service. Bro. Daniel Camara serves as the director of the bus and children's work for the Hispanic ministry.
The Spanish-language doctrinal statement affirms the Bible as the inspired, inerrant Word of God; God as creator of the universe in six literal days; the fall of man and redemption through the cross; salvation by repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as the only Savior; and the eternal destinies of heaven for the saved and hell for the lost.
What We Believe
Smyrna's doctrinal statement is rooted in the King James Bible, which the church holds to be the inspired and infallible Word of God and the final authority for faith and practice. The church teaches the Trinity - one God eternally existent in Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and affirms the deity, virgin birth, and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. Salvation is by grace, received through repentance and faith alone; justification is declared by faith alone through the merit of Christ alone. The church also teaches the visible, personal, and premillennial return of Jesus Christ, the everlasting conscious blessedness of the saved in heaven, and the everlasting conscious punishment of the lost in hell. Worship is intentional, conservative, and biblical in style, centered on the preaching of the Word rather than on emotional entertainment.
Pastors and Staff
Senior Pastor Bill Adams has led Smyrna since 2006, building on a pastoral career that has spanned more than three decades, including 17 years at Temple Baptist Church in Manchester, Tennessee. He holds nearly a Bachelor's Degree in Theology from Tennessee Temple College and a Master of Ministry from Great Plains Divinity School. Youth Pastor James Tate joined the Smyrna staff in January 2015. He was saved at Middle Tennessee State University, trained at Ambassador Baptist College, and earned a Master's degree from West Coast Baptist College in 2017. He and his wife Tracy lead the youth ministry together and have five children. Pastor Mark Schuler leads the Spanish ministry with his wife Susan after eighteen years of ministry in Honduras. Bro. Daniel Camara directs the bus and children's ministries.
Plan Your Visit
First-time guests can plan their visit in advance through the church's online form, and on Sunday mornings, ushers greet newcomers in the foyer and help direct them to the right classrooms and services. Nursery care is available for every service for children two years old and under, and Bible-centered classes for ages three through twelve are taught by friendly, trained teachers. The church does not require a particular dress code; members simply try to look their best and dress modestly, but newcomers are welcome as they are. Visitors are not expected to give during the offering. The morning worship service lasts a little over an hour, and the church is fully accessible, with nursery care and interpreters for the deaf available at every service.
Livestream and Giving
Services are broadcast live through the church's Boxcast livestream, allowing members who are sick, traveling, or serving in the military to keep up with the preaching and worship. Giving is available online through the church's secure giving page.
The Bethlehem Event
Each year in mid-December, the church opens its campus for a multi-night walk-through event called Bethlehem. Visitors enter a recreated first-century town filled with live animals, a working marketplace, and the bustle of travelers, designed to put families in the middle of the Christmas story and walk them through the gospel of Christ.
