On the western edge of Henrico County, where Short Pump meets Glen Allen, Shady Grove United Methodist Church anchors a wooded campus at 4825 Pouncey Tract Road. The congregation's twofold mission - "Discovering and living the love of God through sharing, serving, and connecting with all peoples" - plays out each week through two Sunday worship services, deep investments in children and youth, a thriving music and arts program, and a missions footprint that reaches from Richmond neighborhoods to orphanages in Haiti and a Methodist congregation in Vietnam.
From a Cooper Shop to Today's Sanctuary
The church's roots run back to 1852, when a few neighbors began gathering for fellowship and worship in a cooper shop on Kain Road. Many of them were already members of St. Matthews over in Goochland. Three years later, on May 21, 1855, the deed was signed for one acre of land purchased from the estate of Thomas Maxwell for five dollars, and the first wooden structure was raised. Lumber was donated by Thomas E. Nuckols, and the building was designed and constructed by his brother-in-law, Thomas Wurlow.
The 1880s doubled the little building as a county school, and by the late 1890s the congregation had outgrown it. Members raised funds, men served as construction crews, and women and children fed the crews so the new structure - today's Chapel - could be dedicated in 1900 with 95 members and no debt. A photograph of that day still rests in the church library's history cabinet.
The twentieth century brought electricity in the 1940s, a loss of the front parking lot when Pouncey Tract Road was widened in the 1970s, a steeple rebuilt after a 1973 lightning strike, and stained glass installed in the Chapel in 1993. Henrico County recognized the congregation with a Historic Marker on March 5, 1995, given by Dr. and Mrs. R. H. Fennell Jr. The current Sanctuary opened in December 1999 after a building campaign that raised more than $600,000 in pledges, followed by the Education and Fellowship Buildings in 2004.
Two Sunday Services, One Church
Two Sunday services anchor the life of the church. At 9:30 am, the Sanctuary fills for Traditional Worship - the congregation that grew around a chapel in 1900, now gathered in the larger space completed in 1999. At 11:00 am, the Fellowship Hall hosts Modern Worship, led by Director of Modern Worship Stephen Manley. The contemporary service centers on a near-century-old walnut table once used by the Men's Sunday School class, repurposed as its altar.
The 9:30 am service is livestreamed, and an archive of worship services and specials is available on the church's YouTube channel. A weekly bulletin is uploaded for those who like to follow along.
Children are always welcome in worship. During the 9:30 am service, children age three through fifth grade are invited to Sunday School following the Children's Moment. During the 11:00 am hour, children ages three and up may depart for C.O.W. - Children's Own Worship - in the Chapel Building. Nursery care for children under three is open during both services in Room 111 of the Education Building.
Belong, Become, Bless
Shady Grove organizes ministry around a three-part discipleship framework drawn from Disciple Like Jesus by Phil Maynard and Eddie Pipkin and tied to Matthew 4:19 - "Come, follow me ... and I'll show you how to fish for people." Belonging to the Body of Christ is the work of drawing people into the life of the church. Becoming more like Jesus names the formation that happens through study, prayer, and worship. Blessing the world pushes the congregation outward in mission and service.
The three B's shape everything from Wednesday Night children's programming to the church's local and global partnerships. Cornerstones named by the church itself are faith, prayer, and community - threads that run through every activity and meeting.
Children, Nursery Through Fifth Grade
Children's Ministry partners with families to help children from infants through fifth grade understand what being a disciple of Jesus Christ means. Programs weave worship, obedience to Jesus, and service to others through Sunday School, C.O.W., G3, musicals, Camp Pray & Play, and Vacation Bible School.
For third through fifth graders, G3 - Grow, Go, Give - meets regularly with an emphasis on sharing kindness and serving others. G3 children take part in Operation Christmas Child, Comfort Bags 4 Kids, Sewing Seeds for Hope, and service days at Shalom Farms. Children's Music and Arts adds three choirs: Sunshine Singers for ages three through kindergarten on Wednesdays, Praise Kids for grades one through five on Sundays, and Kids Drama for children interested in the annual Christmas musical and other productions. Children are encouraged to invite friends to everything, and parents connect through the Treehouse at the Grove Facebook group.
Youth Life at the D.O.G. House and RISE
Youth Ministry welcomes students into a safe, nurturing place where faith guides exploration and self-discovery. On Sunday mornings, youth begin in the 9:30 am worship service and then head to the D.O.G. House (Disciples of God) for learning, fellowship, and donuts. The exception is Communion Sundays (the first Sunday of each month) and summer months, when youth remain in the Sanctuary for the full service.
Sunday nights belong to RISE, which meets from 5:00 to 6:30 pm in the D.O.G. House. RISE creates a home-like atmosphere where students connect with one another over warm snacks - sliders, pigs in a blanket, buffalo chicken dip - and conversation.
Music options for grades six through twelve include the seasonal Youth Explosion Choir and Youth Orchestra, both meeting Sundays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary.
Wednesdays at the Grove
Wednesday nights are a second front door. Two six-week sessions each year - one in the fall and one in late winter - stack learning opportunities for all ages: children's programming, youth ministry, adult studies, and Sanctuary Choir rehearsals. Several groups meet on Wednesdays year-round. Coffee and Community gathers at the Starbucks in Twin Hickory from 8:00 to 8:45 am. Sewing Seeds of Hope works on walker and wheelchair bags, adult bibs, port pillows, and pillowcase dresses from 12:30 to 3:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. The Braiding Bunch makes t-shirt jump ropes for Operation Christmas Child during the same hours. G.O. (God's Opportunities), an adult study, meets at 6:15 pm in Room 206.
Music and Arts for Every Age
The Music and Arts Ministry aims to use every gift to praise God through worship and to spark musicians and artists into making disciples. Adult choirs include the Sanctuary Choir, which rehearses Wednesdays from 7:15 to 8:45 pm in the Sanctuary and presents an annual Christmas musical drama with a small orchestra. Gideon's Call is a seasonal vocal ensemble for high school boys and adult men. The Golden Notes, a senior handbell choir for adults fifty-five and older, takes music into local assisted-living programs. Alpha Omega Ringers is a seasonal handbell choir for youth and adults. Testify RVA, a vocal and instrumental team of youth and adults led by Director of Music Ministries Robert Phanord, rehearses Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall to lead the Modern Worship service.
Adults in Word and Service
Three adult Sunday School classes meet at 10:50 am between the two worship services: the Seekers in Room 206, the Together Class in Room 201, and the Upper Room Discussion Class in Room 207. On Mondays, the Betty Fairbanks Circle gathers at 11:30 am in the Fellowship Hall on the second Monday of the month for fellowship and service projects like Operation Christmas Child packing.
Women's Bible Study meets Fridays from 10:00 to 11:30 am in Room C-2 of the Chapel Building. The Prayer Shawl Ministry gathers on Tuesdays to knit and crochet shawls for people in need, and teaches beginners, supplies included. JOY@SGUMC - Just Older Youth - is the seniors' fellowship, offering worship, study, service, and fellowship throughout the year for older adults who don't consider themselves finished with growth. The Adult Discipleship Library on the Chapel Building's second floor and Room C-8 holds study and devotional books for individuals and small groups.
A Live Love interest form lets members and regular visitors indicate where they'd like to serve; responses are entered into Realm so staff and committees can match people to opportunities as needs arise.
The Center for Creative Arts
The Center for Creative Arts, founded as a ministry of the church and open to students of all faiths, offers private music lessons and group art classes to more than 200 students in the West End of Richmond. Music recitals are held twice a year, in December and spring. Art classes run from preschool through adult. Summer brings half-day camps in art, dance, chess, robotics, and musical theatre that have earned a reputation as some of the most popular in the Richmond area. Sue Brown directs the Center.
A Preschool on Campus
Shady Grove UMC Preschool is a ministry of the church for children in the Short Pump and West End areas. The program focuses on the whole child - social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and spiritual - through a hands-on curriculum that "learns by doing." Director Kaitlin Marschke leads a staff that fosters creativity, independence, and a positive sense of self so children leave ready for kindergarten.
Missions Across Henrico and the World
The Missions Council supports a wide bench of local partners. Adult and youth mission trips travel with YouthWorks and Appalachian Service Project. Locally, the church lifts up Welborne UMC Food Pantry, Young Lives, Strategies to Elevate People (STEP), Hope House, CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter), and Butterflies 4 Smiles.
Volunteers package meals alongside Rise Against Hunger, sort and pack boxes for Operation Christmas Child, run food drives and Meals on Wheels deliveries through Feed More, dig at Shalom Farms, swing hammers for Habitat for Humanity, and staff the STEP Christmas Store. Shady Grove also supplies the Caring Closet, now located on the UMFS/Shineforth campus, which provides free clothing to clients of area agencies.
Missionaries Around the World
Global Missions partners directly with missionaries and ministries around the world:
- Holistic Haitian Alliance, which cares for vulnerable children in Haiti through shelter, food, education, medical care, and more.
- Path Ministries / Otino Waa, which rescues orphans in Uganda and Ethiopia and raises them to become leaders.
- Laura and Timo, working with Congolese and other pastors in Finland.
- Rev. Park, a Virginia Conference Partnership of Hope missionary in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where the work has grown to thirty-nine churches.
- A missionary couple in Central Asia who lead Bible studies, install water filtration systems, build greenhouses, and gift goats - details intentionally kept off public channels for safety.
The congregation has been packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child since 2014 and aims to send more than 580 each year.
Weddings, the Cemetery, and the Columbarium
Weddings at Shady Grove are services of worship. The church encourages couples married here to attend worship regularly and become part of the church's life. Members of at least six months may schedule weddings for themselves, their children, or their grandchildren up to eighteen months in advance. The Wedding Handbook walks couples through the planning.
The on-site cemetery has been part of the congregation for more than a century, with over 100 plots and a columbarium with more than 40 niches still available for purchase.
Realm, Giving, and the New Endowment
Realm Connect is the church's online community tool. Members can manage contact information, control privacy, view and make pledges, set up recurring or one-time gifts, and stay in touch with groups. A Realm Connect app is available on Apple and Android. Visitor check-in for worship uses a separate online form.
The General Operating Fund pays for the day-to-day life of the church. The Caring for Our House Fund covers periodic large maintenance - roofs, HVAC, painting, alarm systems. A new Shady Grove Endowment and Planned Giving Ministry was created in 2025, with an initial generous donation in December of that year and a matching gift offer of up to $50,000 for new donations over the following three to five months.
Gifts can be made online, by texting "serve" to 73256, through Thrivent Choice Dollars for eligible members, or by stock transfer through Financial Secretary Pam Sweeney.
For a church that began in a cooper shop on Kain Road in 1852, Shady Grove still sets its table for neighbors - and the neighbors, in turn, keep showing up.
