Second Baptist Church Angleton sits on Shanks Road just outside the center of Angleton, where members of the congregation have learned to call it simply "your Second Family." The church exists "for the glory of God: by loving God, loving others, and making disciples," and that three-part purpose shapes every hour of the weekly schedule and every ministry on the campus. Pastor Brian Van Doren, who leads the church alongside Executive Pastor Gabe Duron, frames the congregation's life around an intentional path that moves people from worship into community and from community into personal disciple-making.
Sunday in Angleton: Worship and Small Groups
A typical Sunday at Second Baptist follows a simple rhythm that visitors can step into without much preparation. Sunday School for every age begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by corporate worship at 10:45 a.m. On Sunday evenings during the fall and spring semesters, the church offers discipleship classes for all ages at 6:00 p.m. The adult and student Sunday morning classes use discussion guides that follow Pastor Brian's sermon series, so the small-group conversation stays rooted in the same text that is preached in the main service.
The classes themselves are organized to reflect the kind of life-stage fellowship the church wants to encourage. Babies and preschoolers meet in the nursery area of the Worship Center. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade gather in the Children's Ministry Area of the main building. Students in sixth through twelfth grade meet in the Student Ministry Space, then break into separate guys' and girls' classes. Among the adults, the Young Adults class is geared toward married couples and singles mostly in their twenties and forties and meets in the gym. The Builders class is for those in their thirties through sixties, the Seekers class is multigenerational, the Bible Boomers class is for couples and singles in their fifties through seventies, and Adult 4 is a senior ladies' class taught by Gloria Moore.
The Discipleship Path: Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples
Second Baptist's ministry strategy is built as a straightforward movement through those three phrases. "Loving God" describes the gathered side of the church family, where corporate worship on Sunday morning serves as the front door for most newcomers. "Loving Others" describes the small-group side, where Sunday School classes and the people within them are the primary way the church helps members walk through life together, study the Word together, and hear about ministry opportunities. "Making Disciples" describes the equipping side, where members are trained and mentored to become disciple-making disciples themselves.
The three stages are designed to feed one another. Events, programs, and intentional connections move people from the worship service into a small group, and the small group in turn leads people into deeper relational ministry. Lead Pastor Brian Van Doren often points to this as an ongoing process rather than a one-time track.
D-Groups: Relational Discipleship
At the heart of the Making Disciples stage are D-Groups, gender-specific closed groups of three to five believers who meet weekly for accelerated spiritual transformation. A typical D-Group runs three to six months and sometimes up to a year, with the long-term goal that new groups multiply out of existing ones. The groups are not simply signed up for; they are started through preexisting relationships that often grow out of a Sunday School class or a volunteer team.
To help new groups get going, the church points them toward Bible-study resources such as the "Knowing the Bible" series for beginners and the "Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary" for more advanced study, and recommends starting in 1-3 John. A D-Group Guide and a set of Evangelism Tools are available for those who want to lead or join a group.
Children: From Nursery Through Fifth Grade
Children's ministry at Second Baptist runs from the nursery up through fifth grade and is led by Jennifer Briscoe, the Children's Ministry Director. The stated goal is for every child, from the littlest in the nursery to the oldest in elementary, to learn biblical doctrines and Bible skills that will equip them to understand the church's mission and live it out.
The core discipleship program for children is Sunday School at 9:30 a.m., divided by age, using the Answers Bible Curriculum from Answers in Genesis. On Wednesday evenings during the fall and spring, Awana meets from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. for children ages three through fifth grade. The name Awana comes from "approved workmen are not ashamed" in 2 Timothy 2:15, and the program mixes Bible-verse learning and Bible truth with plenty of games and activities.
Across the year, the children's ministry also runs Vacation Bible School for kindergarten through fifth grade, an Easter Egg Hunt on the Saturday before Easter, and Kids' Camp for children in third through fifth grade. The yearly calendar also includes outreach events designed to invite families onto the campus for a safe place to play and hear the gospel.
Students: Sixth Through Twelfth Grade
Student ministry picks up where children's ministry leaves off and walks alongside sixth through twelfth graders through some of the most formative years of their lives. The stated vision is "equipping students to be empowered through biblical teaching, discipleship, building intentional relationships, evangelism, and a growing personal relationship with Christ."
Students meet for Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. in a co-ed setting before dividing into guys' and girls' classes. On Sunday evenings, once a month, students gather in host homes for Discipleship Gatherings, and on the other Sundays they are welcome to join the adult discipleship classes. Throughout the week, parent-led Student D-Groups allow families to schedule gospel-centered conversation around their own rhythms.
Twice a year the ministry plans bigger events. In the spring, D-Now ("Disciple Now") is a weekend retreat built around Bible study, fellowship, worship, and service projects. During the summer, students are invited to attend Youth Camp, a week of discipleship and fun alongside other churches.
Adults: Men, Women, and Discipleship Classes
Adult ministry at Second Baptist is organized around men, women, and the broader Sunday-evening discipleship class lineup. Men's Ministry is described as a work in progress designed to edify men in their walk with God and to embrace their God-given role as leaders of their marriage, family, career, and church. Throughout the year it schedules small groups, D-Groups, and a Men's Dinner.
Women's Ministry gathers ladies who are growing in their walk with the Lord and helping others do the same. Activities have included Bible studies, luncheons, evening fellowships, and cookie exchanges. Both ministries plug into the same D-Group framework that runs through the rest of the church.
The Sunday-evening Discipleship Classes meet at 6:00 p.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Recent offerings have included Discipleship and Biblical Counseling with Don Brooks and Gospel-Centered Stewardship with Cody Vasut and Shane Minks. Those interested in joining a class can email the church office at sbc@yoursecondfamily.org.
Biblical Counseling
The Biblical Counseling ministry is positioned as a form of discipleship focused on a specific area of life. The church teaches that the Bible is sufficient to address every area of life, drawing on 2 Peter 1:3 and 2 Timothy 3:16-17, and that biblical counseling exists to come alongside people who need encouragement from Scripture.
Counseling is offered one-on-one or in small group settings and is led by trained volunteers under the supervision of Jennifer Briscoe. Sessions are free, although counselees are asked to contribute $25 to cover materials for homework assignments, with scholarships available. Registration is handled through the church center, and additional information is available by emailing the counseling administrator.
Missions: Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and the Ends of the Earth
Second Baptist organizes its missions strategy around Acts 1:8, providing physical, financial, and prayer support to partners locally, across the country, and around the world. The church's current international emphasis is Bulgaria, where a team from Second Baptist has traveled to work alongside partner churches and lead teaching on relational discipleship.
Locally, the church supports Southside Elementary, Texas Port Ministry, Refuge for Women (Texas Gulf Coast), the Pregnancy Help Center, and the Gulf Coast Baptist Association. Domestically, the church cooperates with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention. Internationally, the church partners with Bulgaria Missions, Samaritan's Purse, and the International Mission Board through the SBTC. Each fall the church hosts a Missions Conference that brings missionaries home on furlough to preach and to share a Q&A with the congregation.
What We Believe
Second Baptist Church Angleton holds to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 as its statement of faith. The church is partnered with the Southern Baptist Convention, the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, and the local Gulf Coast Baptist Association. Membership is open by profession of faith and baptism, by transfer of letter from a like-minded church, or by believer's baptism for those who have already professed faith. All candidates are expected to meet with a pastor and complete the four-week Meaningful Membership class before being presented to the church at a regularly scheduled business meeting.
Visiting and Getting Connected
The church office at 1817 Shanks Road is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and the phone number is 979-849-7220. Visitors can find their way around by arriving a little before 9:30 a.m. for Sunday School or coming straight to the 10:45 a.m. worship service. Sermon audio and video are posted online, and the church livestreams and archives its services on its YouTube channel. A weekly discussion guide follows the sermon and can be downloaded from the church site, and a podcast version is available on Spotify. Giving is available online through the church center, and updates appear throughout the week on Facebook. Whether someone is stepping through the doors for the first time, looking for a place to grow in discipleship, or sensing a call to missions, the path at Second Baptist is built to meet them where they are and walk with them toward becoming a disciple-making disciple of Jesus Christ.
