A Historic Sanctuary at 17th and L
St. John's Lutheran Church sits on the corner of 17th and L streets in Sacramento's Midtown neighborhood, where the congregation has worshipped for over 150 years. The historic, grand, yet intimate sanctuary was dedicated on October 6, 1912, by Pastor Charles Oehler, who proclaimed, "This is the house of God, and it is today dedicated and consecrated to God's work." Restored most recently in 2008, the building continues to serve as a landmark in Downtown Sacramento.
Key features of the sanctuary include a 59-rank Bedient Opus 80 pipe organ with 3,295 individual pipes, original pews, and church bells from 1912. A choir loft carries the harmonious voices of several musical ensembles, and the front of the sanctuary houses the Kinderraum, a kids' worship space. "This is the house of God, and those who worship here are dedicated to Living God's Love in the World," wrote former Senior Pastor Frank Espegren.
Sunday Worship in a Liturgical Setting
Two Sunday morning services anchor the life of the congregation. Worship takes place at 9:00am in person and via livestream on YouTube, and at 11:30am in person only. An Education Hour fills the 10:15am gap between services, where adults gather in Oehler Hall for faith formation, and Sunday School, Confirmation, and youth groups meet across the campus.
Every worship service is built around a liturgical framework of hymns, readings of the day, communion, and prayers. Many elements feel traditional, while prayers are written by youth and adults, and music may feature brass one Sunday and a four-part quartet the next. People come dressed in sweatshirts and suits, and everything in between. Communion is open to all.
Ushers, greeters, eucharistic servers, and altar guild members prepare the space. Children and youth serve as acolytes in the Order of St. John, and lay leaders of all ages serve as Assisting Ministers. After worship, the community gathers in the courtyard for a coffee hour.
A Robust Music Program
Music fills the sanctuary at St. John's through several ensembles. The Sanctuary Choir performs sacred choral works and festival hymns that reflect the lectionary. The Handbell Choir, ringing for two decades, plays at least once each month. Celebration Singers, an auditioned group of about 20 voices, specializes in contemporary and classical settings in four- and eight-part harmonies. Organist Elie Wu anchors the instrumental program.
The Bedient Opus 80 organ, designed and built by the Bedient Pipe Organ Company of Lincoln, Nebraska, incorporates 35 ranks from previous instruments (a 1912 Murray Harris organ and a 1967 Swain and Kates organ) along with 24 new ranks. Installed in June 2008, it is organized in four divisions: Great, Pedal, Swell, and Choir.
Children, Youth, and Family Ministries
Children from newborn through 5th grade are served through the Nursery, Sunday School, and the Kinderraum worship space. The Nursery, staffed by trained attendants, is open during both Sunday services and the 10:15am education hour. Sunday School is divided into two classrooms: Seedlings for lower elementary students and Saplings for upper elementary students, who read directly from the Bible and engage through arts and crafts.
For youth in 6th through 12th grade, Confirmation classes meet Sundays from 10:15-11:15am in the loft of The Gathering Place, inviting young people to think more deeply about their individual faith lives and their connection to scripture and tradition. The High School Youth Group gathers every Sunday at 10:15am in the Youth Room for weekly gatherings, service projects, peer ministry, and summer trips.
The Order of St. John offers teenagers ages 10-18 the chance to serve at the altar. Members ring bells, light candles, lead processions, assist with communion, present banners, and lead children to music practice. Led by lay leaders Rob Sawyer and Betsy Long, the Order serves on acolyte teams once a month.
Adult Faith Formation and Luminaria
Adults explore their faith through the Sunday morning Education Hour, where faith formation Bible studies, presentations, and explorations focus on a theme or scriptural text for a season. Luminaria is the entry program into membership, a journey intentionally designed to open one's mind and heart into the life of faith. Members of Luminaria are called Lumens and are accompanied by Companions on their journey.
The LLL Book Club meets on the third Thursday of each month at 11:00am in the church library. A Wednesday Bible Study gathers at 12:00pm via Zoom using the style of Lectio Divina, exploring the readings for the coming weekend's worship.
Direct Services to Neighbors in Need
For more than 40 years, the St. John's community has engaged thoughtfully with individuals experiencing homelessness in Sacramento. In the 1980s, the congregation launched Saint John's Program for Real Change, now a flourishing independent nonprofit that has equipped over 35,000 women and children with the tools to transform their lives.
Direct services are provided Monday through Thursday in The Gathering Place. The Pilgrimage Meal serves a hot meal on the first, third, and fifth Mondays of each month from 2:00-4:00pm. The Afternoon Snack Stop offers grab-and-go snack bags every Wednesday and Thursday, and on the second and fourth Mondays, from 2:00-4:00pm. Midtown HART Respite Care welcomes guests every Tuesday from 9:30am-12:30pm, offering a safe space to rest, recharge, and receive essential items. The Community Thanksgiving Meal, held on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, serves hundreds of neighbors each year.
Mission Partners and Community Outreach
St. John's maintains relationships with several organizations through volunteer service, financial support, and other offerings. Mission partners include Sacramento Area Congregations Together (ACT), California Lutheran University, Lutheran Social Services of Northern California, Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, Central Downtown Food Basket, Mt. Cross Ministries, The Lutheran World Federation, ReconcilingWorks, The Rwanda School Project, My Sister's House, and ELCA World Hunger.
Community Outreach Groups gather around shared interests and values. The LGBTQ+ 1128 Group creates a safe, inclusive space for LGBTQ+ people and allies. The 20s & 30s Young Adult Group meets the second Thursday of each month at a restaurant, brewery, or park. Gather Sacramento brings together young adults ages 18-35 from across the region. The Justice Making Ministry plans speakers, events, and book reads that intersect LGBTQ+ justice, the unhoused experience, racial justice, and care for creation. The Knitting Circle meets the third Tuesday evening and first Sunday afternoon each month. Pub Theology gathers at local coffee shops and breweries for conversation. Dinner Groups connect members across the Greater Sacramento area.
Congregational Care and Parish Nursing
Parish Nurse Suzi Taylor leads Congregational Care ministries, serving as health educator and integrator of faith and health, supporting the Stephen Ministry Team and Eucharistic Servers, overseeing the prayer lists, coordinating home visitations, and following up with those who have health concerns. Eucharistic Ministers to the Homebound receive training to carry communion to those who are sick or absent from worship, a practice encouraged in the Lutheran tradition since 1978.
Beliefs and Values
St. John's mission is to Live God's Love in the World, and its vision is to be a courageous, grace-filled community, deeply rooted in Sacramento and living in changing times, seeking deeper connections and healing with one another and all neighbors. Five values shape the congregation's life: Expansiveness, opening itself to new understandings of the human experience and welcoming those who are missing at God's table; Justice-making, trusting the Holy Spirit to open ears and hearts to the voices of the marginalized; Healing, meeting each person where they are in their unique circumstances; Humility, practicing honest conversations and relinquishing power; and Constancy, rooting the community in the great story of God.
An Inclusive, Reconciling in Christ Community
St. John's is a Reconciling in Christ Church of the Sierra Pacific Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Members understand diversity as inclusiveness and tolerance, giving all people an opportunity for spiritual growth. Regardless of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other characteristic, all are invited to be a part of the community.
The congregation acknowledges that St. John's Lutheran Church and the Greater Sacramento Area lie within the sacred ancestral homelands of the Nisenan, Maidu, Miwok, Me-Wuk, and Patwin Indigenous Peoples. These lands were never ceded, and the community endeavors to form new and ongoing relationships of honor and respect with these lands and peoples.
