A Church That CARES in Spring
Resurrection Lutheran Church sits on Meadow Edge Lane in Spring, Texas, just north of Houston in Harris County. Members describe themselves with an acronym: a church that is Christ-centered, Authentic, Relational, Equipping, and Serving, often shortened to CARES. The congregation's everyday shorthand is a simple line that runs across its materials - "We Can Do More Together." That phrase captures both what the church believes about Christian community and what it spends much of its energy doing: partnering with neighbors in Spring, with ministries across the Houston region, and with mission teams in Central America and beyond.
Resurrection is a member congregation of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS), and the LCMS Texas District features the church in its Mission Stories documentary series. The single campus on Meadow Edge Lane holds three buildings, an early learning center, a sanctuary, and a gym, and on any given week the schedule reaches from Sunday morning worship through Wednesday night exercise classes, Saturday morning men's Bible study, and a Sunday morning tradition called Discipleship Hour.
Two Sunday Services Around an Hour of Discipleship
Sunday is the rhythm of the week at Resurrection. The congregation gathers twice on Sunday morning: at 8:15 a.m. for a traditional service, and at 11:00 a.m. for a contemporary service. Both are held in the Sanctuary in Building A and are open to anyone, in person and online.
Between those two services sits the Discipleship Hour at 9:45 a.m., a Sunday school hour for every age. The preschool and elementary children meet upstairs in Building C. Junior high students gather in their youth room upstairs in Building B, and high school students meet in the senior high youth room, also upstairs in Building B. Adults gather in the gym or in Room 202 of Building C, and Pastor Ted leads a Discovery Class during this hour for anyone interested in becoming a member.
A nursery for children 36 months and under is open in Building B across from the Community Room throughout both worship services and the Discipleship Hour, so parents can stay on campus while their little ones play and learn.
For those who cannot make it in person, services are livestreamed through the church's online platform. Worship bulletins, sermon archives, and other resources sit on the church's resources page, and free access to RightNow Media's library of more than 15,000 Bible studies is offered to everyone connected with the church.
From Nursery to High School: Faith for Every Stage
Children's and student ministry at Resurrection is organized by stage and led by a dedicated team. The Early Learning Center serves preschool-aged children during the week; on Sunday mornings the preschool and elementary rooms upstairs in Building C are led by consistent adult leaders who help children weave faith into everyday life.
For third through fifth graders, Club 345 meets quarterly on a Friday night for an evening of games, snacks, and Scripture. Ellie, the Director of Family Ministry, coordinates the program.
Confirmation at Resurrection follows the historic Lutheran rhythm of First Communion and Confirmation. First Communion, generally for sixth graders, is the first time a young person participates in the Lord's Supper and is preceded by family instruction, two immersions, and a family project. Confirmation is a public affirmation of faith for students in seventh grade and up who have not yet confirmed. Unconfirmed students work through a four-immersion process that includes time for students to connect, time for parents to meet with parents, and time for families to share a meal together. The immersions are held on Sunday afternoons in the home of a staff person or host family, a setting the church chose because faith is lived out in the home. Tara, the Junior High Ambassador, coordinates confirmation.
Middle school youth meets quarterly for fun activities and discussion, and high school youth meets twice a month in a home for a meal, conversation, and Bible study. Sarah oversees the high school ministry, and Tara oversees the junior high ministry.
Music, Choir, and the School of Performing Arts
Music is woven through Resurrection's worship. The choir rehearses on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary and sings during the 8:15 a.m. traditional service throughout the year. No audition or experience is required; the only expectation is a love of music and a willingness to join in. A praise team leads worship at the 11:00 a.m. contemporary service, and a media and tech team runs the slides, sound, livestream, and lighting each week.
The School of Performing Arts (SPA) sits under the Worship Ministry umbrella. SPA offers private thirty-minute lessons in piano, organ, violin, guitar, drums, voice, and digital art, taught by staff who are described as highly trained and who demonstrate strong Christian and ethical values. Tuition payments can be made online through the church's giving platform.
Young Adults, Adults, and the Sprint Groups
The Young Adult Ministry at Resurrection describes its purpose as a Christ-centered community where young adults are encouraged to grow, belong, and serve together. Young Adult Bible Study meets on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at Sawyer Park Ice House, an off-site setting that the group chose for its relaxed, conversational feel. The Young Adult calendar also includes quarterly events such as game nights, pickleball at the church, mini golf outings, and a pool party, all announced through the Rez YA GroupMe.
For adults, Sprint Groups are Resurrection's small-group ministry. The groups are intergenerational, meet in homes, and run from four weeks to four months depending on the time of year. Their stated purpose is to celebrate God together and cultivate relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ. Sign-ups go through the Director of Family Ministry.
Two ongoing support ministries sit alongside the Bible studies. A Widows and Widowers Support Group meets on Tuesday afternoons in the Conference Room in Building B, and the church keeps a standing prayer request form available for anyone who would like the staff to pray for them.
Women's Ministry: Bible Studies, REFIT, and Mats for the Homeless
Resurrection's Women's Ministry lives out its calling through Bible studies, the REFIT fitness program, and service opportunities. A Tuesday morning Bible study meets at 9:30 a.m. in the Community Room in Building B, with childcare available on request. A Tuesday evening online Bible study meets at 7:00 p.m. via Google Meet. Karen coordinates both studies.
REFIT is a free, Christ-centered exercise program held in the Gym in Building B on Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., and on Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m. The program describes its approach as building community, encouraging one another, and making an impact, with the belief that fitness is for the willing and not just for the fit. Brenda oversees the REFIT schedule.
On the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the women gather to make sleeping mats for the homeless out of plastic grocery bags. The plastic strips are pressed, cut, and linked into skeins, then crocheted into waterproof, washable, lightweight mats. No experience is required.
Each January the ministry hosts a ladies' retreat at Jordan Ranch in Schulenburg, Texas, with two nights, five meals, and time for fellowship and renewal.
Men's Bible Study, Retreats, and the HOGS
Men's Ministry at Resurrection centers on three rhythms. The Men's Bible Study meets on Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m. in the Conference Room in Building B, studying Scripture and challenging one another to grow as disciples who make disciples. Each fall the men gather for a retreat at Camp Lone Star in La Grange, Texas, an annual weekend of fellowship, worship, and time outdoors.
A retired men's volunteer group known as the HOGS (Helping Our Grounds Stay) meets on Wednesday mornings from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m., year-round regardless of weather. They handle plumbing, electrical work, moving, and grounds maintenance around the campus, cheerfully applying the gifts God has given them. Any retired man is welcome.
An Early Learning Center and a Full Calendar
Resurrection operates an Early Learning Center directed by Christine, licensed by the state of Texas. The Early Learning Center office line is 281-353-4415, separate from the main church office. A newer Micro School option is also listed under the church's preschool ministry.
The church runs a recurring Date Night childcare program on Friday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., typically the last Friday of each month. For $7 per child, the church provides games, a craft, dinner, and a wind-down movie for children from eighteen months through fourth grade so parents can enjoy an evening out.
Recurring community gatherings in the Gym include Thursday morning Free Pickup Pickleball from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., with the church supplying nets, paddles, and balls. Each fall the church hosts a Trunk or Treat on the campus lawn, with candy, games, and snacks for families from the surrounding neighborhoods.
Local Partners Across Spring and the 1960 Corridor
Resurrection, "Beloved/Sent", invests in a wide network of local partners. After Hurricane Harvey displaced Lemm Elementary students and teachers in 2017, the church began a sustained relationship with the school's Lions community, including Lunch Buddies, mentoring, and teacher appreciation.
Other local partnerships include Kingdom Dog Ministries, which teaches the gospel through the bond between a dog and its master in settings from youth groups to prisons; Pregnancy Assistance Center North (PACN), a Christ-centered resource for women and men facing pregnancy and sexual health decisions; Elijah Rising, a Houston prayer-and-action ministry working to end sex trafficking; Hope Center Houston, which serves men and women experiencing homelessness along the 1960 corridor; and Neighborhood Assistance Ministry, which provides a Family Violence Center, Children's Medical Clinic, Resale Shop, 50+ Senior Center, Meals on Wheels, and emergency assistance for a service area larger than Austin.
Locally, the church has also hosted neighborhood gatherings called "Party with a Purpose" and "Neighborhood Tables for Spring Creek," and supports Spring Creek Village, Constable 4, and surrounding families through its "Celebrate, Cultivate, Connect" personal missional map.
Mobility Teams and Mission Trips to Belize and Beyond
Resurrection has been collecting wheelchairs and other mobility devices from across the Houston area for nearly two decades. Working with Joni and Friends, Hope Haven, and World Access Project, the church helps refurbish the equipment and distribute it through Mobility Mission Trips to families in Central America. Volunteers can serve on a Calling Team, Pick Up Team, or Mission Team, and the church accepts donations of mobility devices through the church office.
Since 2006, Resurrection has sent teams to Belize. Work has ranged from rural churches near Belize City to a Christian feeding center in the inner city, churches and preschool in Lord's Bank, house building in Ladyville, and a home for displaced children near Flowers Bank. The teams focus on building up local leaders and infrastructure that strengthen the Christian presence throughout the year.
The church also partners with India Transformed (community development, child care, women's empowerment, and child sponsorship), PLI Leadership (raising up missional leaders for church planting), and Mission of Christ Network (MCN), a Lutheran-grounded outreach organization that equips everyday Christians to be sent and supported around the world. After hurricanes Ike and Harvey, Resurrection was active in disaster relief alongside other groups on the Gulf Coast.
Church Planting Through the Harvest Partnership
Resurrection's most distinctive outward work may be the Harvest Partnership, a Spirit-driven effort to multiply disciples and churches by investing spiritual, relational, intellectual, physical, and financial capital. The partnership's daily prayer habit is named in Luke 10:2: "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few."
Harvest Partnership began in 2015 with Christ the King in Kingwood and Lamb of God in Humble. In 2017, planting pastor Seth Kunze and his wife Jacklyn launched The Dwelling in Porter. In 2018, Resurrection served as the sending church for Mark and Laura Pulliam, who launched Lazarus in Spring. In 2019, Trey and Kathy Sansom launched Project 242. Most recently, Paul and Rose Korabandi joined the partnership to reach the North Houston Telugu community. The partnership uses a residency model based on the Texas District's framework of right place, right person, right plan.
What Resurrection Believes
Resurrection's stated beliefs are rooted in the Lutheran confession. The church teaches that the Bible is the true Word of God, citing 2 Timothy 3:14-17 and 2 Peter 1:20-21. It teaches that Scripture tells the story of God's heart for bringing people back into a right relationship with Him (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). And it teaches that through faith in Jesus believers receive new life (John 5:24), a life expressed in joy for serving and worshiping and in transformed relationships (Romans 6:1-14). The Great Sending, a book that reflects the congregation's vision, frames every part of life as an opportunity to be on God's mission.
The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod affiliation shapes the church's sacramental life. First Communion is offered to sixth graders after a season of family instruction; Confirmation follows for seventh graders and up through the four-immersion process described above.
Visiting and Getting Connected
Worship is held on Sundays at 8:15 a.m. (traditional) and 11:00 a.m. (contemporary), with a Discipleship Hour at 9:45 a.m. in between. Both services are available in person and online. Visitors are welcome at any service, and the Discovery Class, led by Pastor Ted during the Discipleship Hour, is the natural next step for those interested in membership. The church office can be reached at 281-353-4413, and the Early Learning Center at 281-353-4415.
Giving is available online through the church's giving platform, and a weekly e-letter can be subscribed to from the main navigation. The church maintains active Facebook and Instagram pages under Resurrection Lutheran Church and resurrectiontx, along with a YouTube channel and a prayer request form. The Great Sending prayer journal PDF is available for free download.
