On a quiet stretch of Welshwood Drive in Nashville, a non-denominational congregation called Ray of Hope Nashville gathers each Sunday with a simple promise stitched into its tagline: Hope Lives Here. The church describes itself as Christ-centered and committed to worship, justice, and authentic community, and it carries those three words into everything from its Sunday gatherings to its weekday prayer calls.
A Pastor Shaped by the Caribbean and by Nashville
Ray of Hope Nashville is led by Senior Pastor Dr. Martin L. Espinosa, a Trinidad-born preacher who came to the United States as a young man to study Bible and Theology at American Baptist College in Nashville, where he graduated summa cum laude. He went on to earn a Master of Theological Studies from Vanderbilt University Divinity School, focusing on Homiletics, and pursued further graduate work in Homiletics and Ethics. Raised in the Catholic school system of Trinidad and Tobago, he was later baptized at Mt. Pleasant Independent Baptist Church in Trinidad and was ordained by Bethel Baptist Church in St. Thomas in 1984.
Pastor Espinosa co-founded Ray of Hope in 1997 alongside Rev. Dr. Weems, and the two have co-pastored the Nashville congregation together ever since. His ministry is marked by what the church calls preaching healing and deliverance to people who have been hurt, hindered, or left without hope. He speaks widely on family relationships, fatherhood, male sexuality, childhood sexual abuse, and the connection between male spirituality and sexuality, and he is recognized nationally for his preaching and gospel teaching. He is also a fifth-degree black belt in hapkido and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Mu Gamma Chapter.
From Refuge to Nashville-Wide Mission
The church was launched in 1997 under the name Ray of Hope Community Church with a commitment to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and cultivating a Christ-centered community grounded in faith, love, and service. From its earliest days, the congregation understood itself as more than a place of worship. It set out to be a place of refuge, restoration, and responsibility, where individuals and families could encounter Christ and grow in spiritual maturity while also carrying that faith into the city beyond the sanctuary walls.
That conviction has run through every chapter of the church's life. Community engagement, outreach initiatives, and a scripturally rooted commitment to justice have shaped the congregation as it has grown. When the ministry relocated its place of gathering, members understood the move as an act of obedience, positioning Ray of Hope to more effectively serve the evolving needs of its neighborhood.
The congregation now goes by Ray of Hope Nashville, a name that signals both continuity and expansion. The foundation remains unchanged: biblical truth, authentic worship, strong families, and a more just and compassionate community. As the church frames its current chapter, it is anchored in Scripture, committed to community, and devoted to justice shaped by the love of Christ.
Sundays at 9:30 on Welshwood Drive
Worship is held on Sundays at 9:30 AM at 440 Welshwood Drive in Nashville. Services are intentionally kept to under two hours and follow a steady rhythm: lively music, intentional prayer, charitable giving, and a relevant, engaging message. The aim is to make the hope, love, faith, forgiveness, joy, justice, and kingdom of God easy to understand, regardless of where a visitor is coming from.
First-time guests can expect a warm welcome. Greeters help newcomers complete a visitors card upon arrival so the church can stay in touch, and the congregation treats every guest like a VIP. Dress is wide open. Dressy, business, and casual attire all fit in; jeans are just as welcome as a Sunday suit.
The worship service is designed for the whole family. Rather than separating children off into a separate program, Ray of Hope believes the sanctuary belongs to everyone. Babies giggling and responding to the message are part of the experience the church celebrates.
Daily Prayer Before Dawn
Beyond Sunday mornings, Ray of Hope Nashville hosts daily prayer Monday through Friday at 5 AM CST. The early-morning gathering is held through the church's online community, giving members and friends across Nashville and beyond a quiet way to start the day together in prayer.
Sermons and Giving
Recent messages are posted on the Sermons page of the church's site, where visitors can watch Pastor Espinosa's teachings. Past messages have included series such as The Power To Manifest More and The Peace That The Light Brings, along with special celebrations like the Ray of Hope Pink Sunday Celebration.
Giving is offered in two ways. Members and friends can give in person during Sunday worship using one of the church's offering envelopes, or they can give online through PayPal as a one-time donation or as a recurring gift from a checking account, debit card, or credit card. Online giving makes it easy for those who travel, work on Sundays, or simply prefer to support the ministry from home.
A Nashville Congregation with a Global Heart
From its earliest days, the church has described itself as a community church with a global outreach that invests its time, talent, and treasure in kingdom building everywhere. That blend of local presence and wider vision remains central. Members are encouraged to follow the church on social media at @theraynash to keep up with ongoing events and ministry opportunities, and to visit the church at 440 Welshwood Drive on a Sunday morning to experience the community in person.
