Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church, shortened to Pentecostal MBC and PMBC, stands at 8310 Southview St in Houston. The fellowship is known for a 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service, a 7 p.m. Tuesday Bible study and a ministry structure that reaches from recovery care and scholarship support to music, drama, transportation and an Angel Tree outreach for children of incarcerated parents. The congregation's welcome addresses newcomers as part of the PMBC family and points them toward a Fellowship Class built to introduce the many opportunities for service.
Sunday Worship at 10:30 and Bible Study on Tuesday
Two gatherings anchor the week at Southview Street: the Sunday morning service at 10:30 a.m. and Tuesday Bible study at 7 p.m. Services can be watched live on the church's Facebook presence, and sermons are available for viewing through the sermon archive. The address and phone number are listed for those planning to come in person, with a contact form for messages.
Music is central to that Sunday gathering. The music ministry sets out to create an atmosphere through song accompanied by instruments that will usher in the Holy Spirit and produce ultimate praise, inviting others to participate in the worship experience and the congregation to express thanksgiving, praise, confession and supplication in every dimension. A praise team and a men's chorus carry much of that work, and the drama ministry adds a creative-arts dimension, ministering, enlightening and educating the congregation in biblical principles and doctrines through theatrical worship.
Other volunteers shape the arrival and order of worship. The hospitality ministry welcomes people with a warm smile and handshake as a prelude to worship, aiming to make each person's church experience positive. The nurses ministry assists pastors and teachers with people management, helps with seating, collects the offering and maintains a safe environment, while ushers serve alongside them.
A Church Built for Discipleship
The stated vision of Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church is to reach out to its community at large for the cause of Christ and to foster a better spiritual and physical environment for its inhabitants. Its mission is to develop productive and generous disciples of Christ using the mediums of prayer, preaching, teaching and training, to raise the awareness and focus of every believer in the fellowship to support and promote the church's programs and ministries, and to promote personal growth and development in relationship with Christ along with an understanding of obligations to others.
The church keeps visible ties to the wider Baptist family. The South Texas District Association is described as a collaborating fellowship of more than sixty churches dedicated to giving member churches the tools and resources to develop, thrive and grow in pursuit of God's Kingdom agenda. The National Baptist Convention of America is a fellowship of voluntary churches approximating three and a half million African-American Baptists whose roots stemmed from the organization of the Foreign Mission Baptist Convention of the United States. The Missionary Baptist General Convention of Texas equips and empowers district associations and churches with ministry resources, teaching, training and consultation so pastors, church leaders and attendees can make disciples of Jesus Christ.
What This Church Believes
The basic Baptist beliefs are stated plainly. God is the creator and sustainer of the universe. The Bible is the inspired word of God. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, pre-existent before the world, virgin born, sinless, crucified, risen and returning. Salvation is accomplished only by the work of Christ on the cross in a believer's behalf, and it is received as a gift from God and accepted through faith in Christ as Lord and Savior. Baptism is immersion in water symbolizing the believer's death to sin and resurrection to new life in Christ. The local church is a group of baptized believers bound together in a common faith in Christ to promote the kingdom of God.
Alongside those affirmations, the church keeps some pointed reminders. Church membership does not save, because salvation is by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and good works, culture or baptism cannot save. Christians are continually tempted, and the life in Christ is described as carrying greater joy and larger liberty rather than needless restriction.
The Covenant Members Make Together
Members enter covenant with one another. Having been led, as they believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, and on the profession of their faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, they solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant as one body in Christ.
The commitments run through the whole life of the church. Members engage to walk together in Christian love, to strive for the advancement of the church in knowledge, holiness and comfort, to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrines, and to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor and the spread of the gospel through all nations. They promise to maintain family and secret devotion, to educate their children religiously, to seek the salvation of kindred and acquaintances, to be just in dealings and faithful in engagements, and to abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drink as a beverage. They also watch over one another in brotherly love, remember each other in prayer, aid each other in sickness and distress, and seek reconciliation without delay.
New Members and the Fellowship Class
Newcomers are followed deliberately. The Fellowship Class is designed to acquaint people with the many ministry opportunities available at Pentecostal Church, structured to enhance spiritual and physical life. The Call to Joy ministry enables members to personally follow up with new believers and new members as they enter the fellowship, forming a Christ-centered friendship with each person and encouraging basic spiritual disciplines that lead toward consistent spiritual growth and the making of disciples.
The counselors ministry assures prospective new members and candidates understand that the new life in Christ is one of salvation and forgiveness, and works to foster a welcoming environment and introduction to new membership. The new membership ministry provides an overview of the spiritual and financial obligations of stewards in God's Kingdom and introduces the importance of spiritual growth. For those who have decided for Christ, the church frames that choice as a definite decision: by grace through faith, a believer has chosen to live and walk with Him and is welcomed into the full fellowship of the church's membership.
Sunday School, Bible Guild and Scholarships
The teaching ministry is Sunday School, which provides structured classes for all age groups along with specialized courses addressing present-day relevant needs of individuals and families. Rev. Donell Wright coordinates the work with Delores Jackson and Glory Thomas as co-coordinators, and class listings include a New Members Class, a Men's Class and Christian Life #3.
Christian education extends through the Bible Guild and Vacation Bible School, and the scholarship committee gives voice to the membership's conviction that technical and academic training matter for young people. The committee accepts and reviews scholarship applications from high school graduates and continues scholarships for college students, with guidelines and applications available. A nursery ministry serves the youngest children in the fellowship.
Care, Comfort and Recovery
Care and recovery run from grief support to addiction recovery. The Family Assistance and Bereavement ministry renders compassionate care and assistance during the loss of a loved one, helps family members navigate church administrative protocol in making final arrangements, and provides spiritual and grief counseling during and after the crisis.
The Recovery Ministry sets out to administer hope to the hopeless and improve the overall quality of life, spiritually and physically, for individuals struggling with addictions. It meets three nights each week, on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. The Homebound ministry serves those who cannot attend church worship with acts of kindness and compassion through phone calls, visitations, cards, errands and other acts of support, and the transportation ministry provides rides to and from worship services as well as social and outreach activities.
Preparation matters too. An emergency committee formulates an evacuation plan so that in an emergency, pre-planned action can be implemented. The health and wellness ministry promotes healthy lifestyles through awareness and wellness activities that encourage individuals to make responsible health choices for better mental, physical and spiritual quality of life.
Reaching Out From Southview Street
Outreach begins with the evangelism and outreach ministry, whose purpose is to spread and share the word of God and to witness to the saved and unsaved about the saving grace of God. The Angel Tree demonstrates God's love and creates evangelistic opportunities by providing gifts and clothing during the Christmas season to children of an incarcerated parent, and a foreign mission ministry extends the work beyond the neighborhood.
The culinary ministry fosters an environment of spiritual fellowship through the planning, preparation and serving of food for various church-related functions, and the financial stewardship ministry connects regular, cheerful giving to the support of the ministry, church expenses, the relief of the poor and the spread of the gospel. A wedding coordinator helps couples plan their marriage within the life of the church, and the deacons provide leadership in finance, inter-church and intra-church work, maintenance, membership and transportation, while the deaconesses carry their own ministry leadership duties as baptismal coordinators and stewards for preparing the Lord's Supper.
Ministry Teams Behind the Work
The office team lists five ministers: Rev. Donell Wright, Rev. Darnell Stephen, Sr., Rev. Sidney Luckett, Rev. Roderick Shaw and Rev. Richard Bass, Sr. Rev. Donell Wright coordinates Sunday School, and Rev. Roderick Shaw serves as vice president of the Recovery Ministry. The deacon board is chaired by Deacon Jimmy Bolden, Sr., with Deacon Bobby Green as co-chairman, and Deacon Bolden also leads evangelism and outreach and serves on the transportation ministry.
Deleatrice Washington serves as Minister of Music with Roland Smith, Sr. as director, supported by a praise team led by Ashley White and Nadine Hypolite and a men's chorus led by Herbert Lyons and Odis Pullum. Other ministry leaders include Monique Bass in women's ministry and communication, Warren Davis in recovery and Call to Joy, Patricia Davis as Call to Joy co-coordinator, Barbara Milton and Herbert Lyons in counseling, Arnell Cook in scholarship, Virginia Lyons in Pastoral Hearts, Melissa Charles and Patricia Thornton in hospitality, Darrell Carter and Joyce Lewis in media, and Josie Broussard in the nurses ministry.
Men, Women, Seniors and Young People
The fellowship groups cover a wide span of life. The Brotherhood Ministry seeks to promote leadership and brotherhood as exemplified by Jesus, in the church, home and community, as productive citizens of Christ, and to further the ministry, growth and development of the saved and unsaved. The Women's Ministry works to enlighten, empower and encourage women through prayer, training forums, mentoring and fellowship, enhancing relationships with God, family, one another and community, promoting personal growth and cultivating coping skills for life's challenges.
Golden Age gives honor and recognition to seniors for the positive influence, guidance and dedication they have shared over many years, and SR. ON THE MOVE keeps older members moving within the life of the church. Pastoral Hearts exists to support the pastor and his family, to demonstrate love and encouragement, and to help build a strong community of faith, hope and love.
Young people have their own lane, with a Youth Church, a Youth Choir and Power Hour standing alongside the praise team and men's chorus for younger members, while the scholarship ministry supports high school graduates as they move on to college.
Communication, Welcome and a Mobile App
Communication and announcements promote the church's mission and vision through public relations and publicity campaigns that invigorate interest and participation in worship and related services, ministries and other functions, and the media ministry carries similar work. Members can stay in touch through the church's mobile app, offered for Apple and Android devices. For newcomers, the emphasis remains personal: hospitality greeters meet people at the door, and the Fellowship Class is the structured introduction to a church that lists more than three dozen named ministries.
A Fellowship on Southview Street
Taken together, the ministries of Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church form a fellowship that treats worship, education, care and service as parts of one life. The Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. and Tuesday Bible study at 7 p.m. sit at the center of a church whose stated aim is to reach its community for the cause of Christ and to develop productive and generous disciples of Christ through prayer, preaching, teaching and training.
