Neals Creek Baptist Church sits between Belton and Anderson, South Carolina, at the corner of Belton Highway and Amity Road Extension. The building has stood on this stretch of Anderson County since 1985, but the congregation itself goes back more than two centuries, to a log meeting house erected in 1803 on land donated by the Vandiver family. Today the church runs a full slate of Sunday and Wednesday ministries, supports foster families through its own outreach, and broadcasts every service online for members who cannot be there in person.
From a Log Cabin in 1803 to the Present Sanctuary
The story of Neals Creek begins with a simple act of generosity. In 1803 John Vandiver, the great-grandfather of D. S. and E. P. Vandiver, donated the land on which the first house of worship was built, about three-fourths of a mile northeast of where the present church now stands. That first structure was a log building, and the description of its construction gives a vivid picture of frontier-era craftsmanship. The seats were made of split logs, smoothed on the split side with a drawing knife - a tool with a blade two inches wide and twelve to fourteen inches long with a handle on each end. Two medium-sized logs were laid on the ground twelve feet apart, and the seats were placed across them. Notches were cut in the logs to keep the seats from turning over. The floor, too, was made of split logs fitted together. The building served the congregation for sixteen years.
A second log church was built in 1819, this time on what is now the graveyard, where the second pastor, known to the church as Uncle Bobby King, is buried. King attracted such large and increasing congregations that the building could not hold them. To solve the problem, the church sold the building to the highest bidder and had it removed. With the proceeds from the sale, along with other contributions, members soon erected a larger frame building on the same site, finished properly and used for decades.
By 1870 the frame building in which the people had been worshiping for forty-three years had fallen into a dilapidated condition. Under the leadership of Pastor W. H. King, the members resolved to build something new. It was built of homemade brick and was completed in July 1871, except for the floor. For two years the congregation worshipped on a dirt floor before voting in the summer of 1873 to install a wooden one.
Improvements continued in stages over the next century. In early 1939 the church voted to build much-needed Sunday School rooms. When those rooms were finished they were paid for, with money left over. The building was then remodeled, the exterior was bricked, and a baptistery and choir loft were added later. On November 18, 1962, the members voted to build an educational building, which was completed in June of the following year. The present sanctuary was completed and occupied on April 1, 1985, and remains the heart of the campus today.
What Neals Creek Believes
The church affirms the Holy Bible as the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God and the basis for its beliefs. Members subscribe to the doctrinal statement of The Baptist Faith and Message as adopted by the Southern Baptist Convention in 2000. The congregation voluntarily bands itself together as a body of baptized believers in Jesus Christ, personally committed to sharing the good news of salvation with lost mankind. The two ordinances recognized by the church are believer's baptism and the Lord's Supper.
Neals Creek associates with three layers of Baptist life: the Southern Baptist Convention, the South Carolina Baptist Convention, and the Saluda Baptist Association. Together these connections tie the church to a network of like-minded congregations across the region and the country.
A Sunday at Neals Creek
The Sunday rhythm at Neals Creek stretches from mid-morning into the evening, with several distinct gatherings designed for different ages and stages of life.
Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. opens the day, with classes for every age from preschoolers through senior adults. The classes meet in various rooms across the campus - some downstairs, some upstairs, some in the Education Building, one in the Family Life Center, and one in the Sanctuary itself - so newcomers can easily find the gathering that fits them.
Morning Worship at 11:00 a.m. follows in the Sanctuary. Children's Church is offered during the service for children in PreK through Kindergarten, so the youngest worshipers have age-appropriate teaching while parents remain in the auditorium.
After a midday break, Adult Choir practice resumes at 5:00 p.m. The choir is a long-standing part of the music ministry, and the church has a Christmas Musical tradition that brings singers together for seasonal preparation.
At 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evenings, the Children's Ministry gathers children from PreK through fifth grade for AWANA, a program that makes the Bible alive and relevant through caring leaders, fun activities, scripture memory, and life lessons. AWANA runs during the school year.
At 6:00 p.m., two parallel gatherings take place. Evening Worship meets for the whole church family, and at the same time Youth Bible Study gathers students in sixth through twelfth grade.
Sunday School Classes for Every Stage
Sunday School is described by the church as an important part of spiritual growth and a key connection point for everyone in the congregation. Classes meet at 10:00 a.m. and are spread across the building so that newcomers can sample more than one before settling in.

Wednesday Nights: Mission Friends, GA's, RA's, Youth, and Prayer
At 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, the campus fills with a steady hum of activity. Each program is mission-focused in its own way, and each gives children and adults a regular midweek touchpoint beyond Sunday morning.
Mission Friends gathers preschoolers from PreK through Kindergarten. It introduces young children to the building blocks of faith and teaches them about God's love for all people.
Girls in Action (GA's) is for girls in first through fifth grade. Participants pray for missionaries overseas and learn about them through fun lessons and crafts.
Royal Ambassadors (RA's) is for boys in first through fifth grade. The boys engage with the Bible and missions through service and relevant activities that bring the Word of God to life.
Youth Worship meets upstairs in the Youth Room from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. The night includes games, a time of worship, and a message from God's Word. Each month brings a new teaching series, and Wednesday gatherings are paired with Sunday-night discipleship groups that meet from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Students split into same-gender groups for deeper Bible study - girls led by Erica Smith and guys led by Bryar Fisher and Brandon Gunter.
Adult Prayer Meeting and Bible Study meets in the Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m., giving adults a chance to pray together and study Scripture in a smaller, conversational setting.
Children's Ministry: Foundations for a Lifetime
The children's ministry at Neals Creek exists to build biblical foundations for children so that, in time, they can accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior and develop a growing relationship with Him. Three weekly touchpoints shape this work.
On Sundays at 10:00 a.m., children join age-appropriate Sunday School classes that engage each child in the story of God and help them understand God's love for them. During morning worship, Children's Church is offered for preschoolers and kindergartners.
On Sunday evenings at 5:30 p.m. during the school year, AWANA brings kids together through games, scripture memory, caring leaders, and life lessons. The program is designed to make the Bible come alive in ways children remember.
On Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m., Mission Friends, GAs, and RAs teach children about missionaries serving around the world. Kids hear about specific missionaries and the work they do, pray for them, and learn to tell others about Jesus.
Youth Ministry: Discipleship in the Middle of the Week
The youth ministry at Neals Creek exists for one purpose: to see every student have a relationship with Jesus and to grow deeper in their walk with Him. Leaders describe the ministry as aiming to make disciples who follow the Lord's call wherever He may lead, with the conviction that Jesus is the sustainer and hope for the future.
Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. are the anchor of the youth calendar. Students meet upstairs in the Youth Room for games, worship, and a message from God's Word. Each month brings a new teaching series - for example, the recent summer series Masterpiece in Progress.
Sunday nights from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. are reserved for discipleship groups. Students split into same-gender groups of sixth through twelfth graders to study the Bible more deeply. Girls' groups are led by Erica Smith; guys' groups are led by Bryar Fisher and Brandon Gunter. A medical release form is required for any student to attend a trip with the youth ministry.
Music Ministry
Music has been part of Neals Creek since the choir loft was added to the building decades ago. The Adult Choir rehearses each Sunday at 5:00 p.m., preparing to lead congregational worship and special musical offerings. The ministry also produces a Christmas Musical each season, with vocal parts - soprano, alto, tenor, and bass - posted online for choir members to access digital files in advance. The most recent title in the rotation is Hope in a Manger.
Fostering Faith: Supporting Foster Families
Fostering Faith is a ministry of Neals Creek that partners with the Anderson County Department of Social Services to support children and families in the local foster care system. Throughout the year, Fostering Faith helps provide comfort items, beds, bed linens, and clothing to foster families in need.
The ministry is funded in two ways. Members can donate new or like-new items for foster families, or they can give directly to the Fostering Faith Fund through the church's online giving portal by selecting the Fostering Faith Fund from the fund menu.
Bible Reading Plans
Each year the church publishes a set of Bible reading plans to help members engage Scripture on a daily basis. Five plans are offered, ranging in length from six months to a full year.
- Six-Month New Testament Plan: Designed for flexibility. If a day is missed, the reader can catch up by reading a little extra the next day. Each day includes reflection without an overwhelming number of chapters.
- Jesus Is King Plan (52 weeks): Five readings each week, leaving a few extra days to meditate more deeply on something significant, catch up on missed readings, or revisit favorite passages.
- Book-by-Book Plan (12 months): The first reading each day alternates between Old and New Testament books, with the Gospels spread throughout the year. The second reading takes the reader through a chapter of wisdom literature and Isaiah.
- Whole Bible Reading Plan (12 months, six days a week): Each week gives six readings, leaving a free day - often Sundays - to catch up on missed readings.
- Whole Bible Daily Plan (12 months): Divides the entire Bible into manageable sections to read every day for a year.
A prayer and study guide is also available as a downloadable companion to the reading plans.
Weekly Bulletins and Archived Messages
The church publishes a weekly bulletin that keeps members informed about the life of the congregation. Bulletins are archived by year going back to 2021 and are available as downloadable PDFs from the church's media pages. Past messages from worship services are likewise archived on the church's SermonCloud page and on its YouTube channel, so anyone who missed a Sunday can catch up at any time.
Livestream and Online Giving
Every worship service at Neals Creek is broadcast live through the church's SermonCloud livestream, and recordings remain available afterward. The church's YouTube channel also hosts the video feed. Online giving is set up through the church's Realm account, allowing members and supporters to give to the general budget or to designated funds such as Fostering Faith.
