Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church: A 1854 Stone Chapel and a Modern Outreach in Frederick

Methodist Church in Frederick, Maryland

Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Frederick, Maryland is a 171-year-old congregation worshipping from its original 1854 stone chapel at 9:30am and from its modern Great Hall at 11am, with a large preschool outreach and a 5-school backpack food program serving the surrounding communities of Spring Ridge, Lake Linganore, Walkersville, and New Market.

About Mt Carmel United Methodist

A Stone Chapel on a Hill Since 1854

On a stretch of Baltimore Road that runs parallel to Route 144 in eastern Frederick County, a stone chapel built by hand in 1854 still anchors Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. In that founding year a faithful community pulled rocks from the surrounding hillside and logged trees from the valley to put up a sanctuary on land they had purchased for ten dollars. They named the place after the mountain in Israel where the prophet Elijah challenged the people to choose whom they would serve, and that biblical reference still gives the congregation its name and identity.

More than 170 years later, the original chapel still stands, towering over the grounds that bear its name, and it is still used every Sunday morning. Mt. Carmel has grown in waves around that fixed point. A Sunday School addition went up in the 1950s when revival swept East Frederick. Growth prompted a full-time pastor, a second worship service, and the first parking lot expansion. In 2008 the congregation pledged resources for a major new facility, and at noon on August 8, 2010 the doors opened behind the old stone church to welcome Vacation Bible School as the new building's very first ministry.

Through the pandemic and into the present, the congregation describes itself as rebuilding not a building but a community of faith, and it welcomes new beginners in hopeful anticipation for what is yet to come. The work of casting God's love and hope into the broader community is the church's stated vision, and its mission is simple: together to reach, transform, and equip people for a lifelong relationship with Christ.

Two Sunday Services, Two Settings

Sunday worship at Mt. Carmel takes two very different shapes, held in two very different rooms of the same campus.

The 9:30am Traditional service gathers inside the historical chapel. Music is led by the chancel choir, supported by piano and congregational hymns, and preaching carries the service forward. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month. Early in the service a children's moment is offered, after which the children return to sit with their families for the rest of worship. During the school year this hour also includes Sunday School for children and two adult Sunday School classes that meet in the first-floor Conference Room at 9:45 and again at 10:45.

At 11:00am the congregation moves upstairs into what is simply called the Great Hall, where the contemporary service unfolds with the Praise Team leading music, a more modern sound and lighting feel, and the same preaching tradition. Communion is celebrated here as well on the first Sunday of the month. After a children's message, school-aged children are dismissed to Children's Church and then return to the sanctuary for the monthly communion and the weekly benediction. A Coffee Hour runs from 10:30 to 11:00 on the main floor, giving families space to overlap between services, meet the pastor and one another, and form intergenerational ties.

The traditional service is also the congregation's online service: it streams at 9:30am on Facebook Live, allowing members who are traveling, homebound, or otherwise unable to attend to worship with the church in real time.

Hope Community Preschool, an Outreach of the Church

Hope Community Preschool is a major ministry of Mt. Carmel and a daily extension of its mission into Frederick County. The school opened in the fall of 2010 alongside the new ministry facility and today serves children ages two through K-Prep in half-day morning and afternoon programs. Families can extend the school day with add-ons called Lunch Bunch and Let's Play, a fitness program started by Children's Ministry Director Michele Stine that introduces young children to games, dance, balance, and an age-appropriate sampler of sports, paired with simple lessons on healthy eating.

Children at Hope spend their mornings in a state-of-the-art building with key fob entry, a security system, fenced outdoor play space, and a large indoor multipurpose room. Teachers hold four-year degrees in Early Childhood Education, design curriculum to the highest level of Maryland State Department of Education standards, and use the Common Core Standards to plan age-appropriate lessons. Twice a month the children attend chapel services led by Mt. Carmel pastors, who use multi-sensory teaching to introduce faith lessons while honoring the diverse backgrounds of the families who attend. All staff and volunteers are background-checked, CPR and First Aid certified, and sign a covenant of acceptable behavior; classrooms and playgrounds are monitored by video surveillance.

The preschool expanded in the fall of 2015 to a second location at New Market United Methodist Church, giving Hope a total capacity for 200 children across the two sites. A second site at the church's Frederick location shares all of the same features. Enrollment for the following year opens in early January, with layered priority periods for church members, current families, siblings, alumni families, and finally the wider community.

Leading the program is Director Kathy Petrill, a graduate of Hood College with a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and a master's as a Reading Specialist, and sixteen years as a public school teacher in Frederick and Washington counties before coming to Hope. The school's motto, drawn from its mission statement, is to give preschool students the foundation to learn mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially through age-appropriate lessons in a loving and caring Christian environment.

Hope4Kids: Feeding Five Schools on Weekends

One of the most distinctive ministries at Mt. Carmel is Hope4Kids, a weekend backpack food program run jointly by a Parish Mission Team that includes Mt. Carmel UMC, Fairview Chapel, and New Market UMC. Each weekend of the school year, volunteers pack bags of food for children at five schools in the East Frederick and New Market communities:

  • New Market Elementary
  • New Market Middle
  • Oakdale Elementary
  • Oakdale Middle
  • Deer Crossing Elementary

The cost of feeding one student for forty weekends is $100. The schools identify children who need the food, communicate with their families, and distribute the packs each week. Hope4Kids volunteers manage donations, plan a menu, shop, pack, and deliver the packs to the schools, packing on one evening each month. Hope4Kids is also a Maryland Food Bank Distribution Partner. Anyone interested in volunteering or donating to the program is invited to email hope4kids.foodpacks@gmail.com.

Music as a Bridge Between Services

Music is taken seriously enough at Mt. Carmel to support three distinct ensembles, each tied to one of the worship styles. The Chancel Choir sings at the 9:30 service and rehearses on Monday evenings from 7:15 to 8:30 in the Conference Room; new singers are welcome to join at any point in the season. The Handbell Choir rings on select Sundays at the traditional service and rehearses on Monday nights from 6:15 to 7:15, with all the necessary training provided for anyone without prior experience. The Praise Team carries the contemporary 11:00 service and rehearses on Tuesday evenings at 6:30; described as blending acoustic instrumentation with vocals, the ensemble is led by contemporary worship director Bekah Rogers.

Rogers, a singer, keyboardist, and member of The Frederick Chorale, joined Mt. Carmel with a passion for connecting people through song and a style that intentionally weaves contemporary and traditional warmth. She is joined by Becky DeLameter, a retired school teacher and lifelong musician who directs both the Chancel Choir and the Handbell Choir. DeLameter performs with the Cantate Concert Choir and other local groups and brings years of flute, choral, and musical theatre experience to the program.

Children, Youth, and the Nursery

Children are explicitly welcome in every worship service at Mt. Carmel. The nursery, located in a first-floor classroom, is staffed every Sunday morning for both the 9:30 and 11:00 services for infants through pre-school aged children. Every staff member and volunteer who works with children is background-checked and trained under Safe Sanctuaries guidelines. Nursery Director Alison Humphrey, who has served the preschool for over a decade, leads this care.

Sunday School is offered at 9:30 in the children's classroom for the full worship hour during the school year. At 11:00 children are integrated into the service itself: after the children's message they are dismissed to Children's Church, then return to the sanctuary for monthly communion and the weekly benediction, taking an active role in the service. Coffee Hour from 10:30 to 11:00 bridges the two services and offers time for intergenerational conversation. Families also gather seasonally for Trunk or Treat, the assembly of teacher care packages, and a Family Advent Lunch that combines a single worship service, a potluck, and Advent wreath making.

Youth ministry at Mt. Carmel centers on youth Sunday School classes throughout the school year, with young people also taking part in mission projects year-round and helping lead Vacation Bible School each summer. Children's Ministry Director Michele Stine works across the preschool, the Children's Church hour, and the Let's Play fitness program, linking the church's family ministries with its early-childhood programs.

Care, Stephen Ministry, and Caring for the Whole Congregation

Mt. Carmel takes seriously the charge to care for its own. A Care Ministry Team, working in close partnership with the pastor, provides physical, emotional, and spiritual support to the church family and the wider community. Team members deliver care packages, make friendly visits, send cards to those who are homebound or in nursing homes, and ship packages to college students and service members. The team hosts Health and Wellness Seminars in the church Great Room, holds a monthly breakfast at the Spring Ridge Senior Apartments, visits the hospitalized, and offers a meals ministry in times of need.

Layered on top of that is Stephen Ministry, a one-to-one lay caring program in which trained Stephen Ministers walk alongside individuals navigating grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, retirement, financial setback, empty nesting, and other life crises. Each Stephen Minister typically meets with one care receiver once a week for about an hour, and the ministers themselves meet twice a month with their Stephen Leaders for supervision and continuing education. Inquiries about receiving a Stephen Minister can be directed through the church office in confidence.

Adults Learning Together

Adult education at Mt. Carmel centers on two Sunday School classes that meet in the first-floor Conference Room during the school year, one from 9:45 to 10:30 and a second from 10:45 to noon. The LUCY (Learning Under Christ's Yoke) Women's Bible Study gathers on Mondays from 9:00 to 10:30 in the third-floor Loft, drawing on daily devotions from the book Jesus Listens. United Women in Faith, the organized women's ministry of the United Methodist Church, meets every other month on Sundays right after the 11:00 service, with all women of the church and community invited.

Men of the congregation meet for United Methodist Men on the second Saturday of each month at 8:00 in the Great Room, gathering for breakfast, fellowship, and a service project such as highway clean-up, grounds work at the church, or helping at Camp Manadokin. The men's ministry is led by President Paul Delameter.

What to Expect When You Visit

Mt. Carmel is easy to find for anyone driving into the area. The address, 9411 Baltimore Road, sits on a service road that runs parallel to Route 144, and the campus has one main parking lot with multiple tiers so worshippers rarely need to hunt for a space. The main entrance is hard to miss. For anyone without a car, the church offers a particular welcome: a bus runs to and from Spring Ridge Apartments for both the 9:30 and 11:00 services.

Dress ranges across both services in the relaxed way typical of a multi-generational congregation, with the more traditional service in the chapel drawing somewhat more formal attire and the Great Hall contemporary service running informal. Communion is observed on the first Sunday of each month at both services, with the full congregation sharing the sacrament together. Children are welcomed from day one and may participate in the service with their family or, depending on age and the time of year, head to nursery, Sunday School, or Children's Church. All who work with children have been background-checked and trained in Safe Sanctuaries practices.

If a Sunday morning is missed, the 9:30 service is livestreamed on Facebook Live and can be replayed afterward. Online giving is available through a Vanco payment portal, and a 2025 Giving Card outlines ways to give by check or cash, by stock gift, through a Donor Advised Fund, by Qualified Charitable Distribution from an IRA, by bequest, or by naming the church as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Tithes and offerings are overseen by the congregation's Finance Team.

Missions Beyond the Doors

Mission work stretches well beyond the church campus. The Hope4Kids backpack program is the largest weekly commitment, but Mt. Carmel also partners with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to respond to natural and civil disasters of major scale. A collection box in the first-floor Gathering Hall receives three items each month for Spring Ridge Elementary and the Linton Shelter. The congregation supports fundraising events such as the annual Mt. Carmel Golf Tournament, in 2026 held on October 23 at Clustered Spires Golf Course, with proceeds underwriting ministries like Hope Preschool and Hope4Kids.

The Pastor and the People

Mt. Carmel is currently served by Rev. Dionne T. Hall, an Elder in Full Connection in the Baltimore-Washington Conference. A former elementary school teacher and adjunct professor, Rev. Hall came to Mt. Carmel after serving as pastor of Shiloh, Grace, and Asbury United Methodist Churches in Hagerstown. She is also a mentor for women journeying toward ordination and pastoral ministry and a former instructor for Cornerstone for Women Leaders courses at Hagerstown Community College. In her own words, above and through everything else, she is a beloved daughter of God, and she looks forward to being home at Mt. Carmel.

A United Methodist Identity

The church is firmly rooted in the United Methodist tradition and the Baltimore-Washington Conference. Mt. Carmel holds the historic Methodist belief that all human beings were created in the image of God, that sin has broken the world, that Jesus Christ is part of God's way of restoring Creation, that Christ rose bodily and a New Creation is coming, and that the Holy Spirit is God's presence with us daily. The Bible is received as a living story of God's involvement with the world. Above all, the church says, Methodists love to talk about grace, which goes before, beside, and ahead of God's people, inspiring them to work for social holiness and a better world.

The congregation's own values mirror those convictions: Mission, because the church exists for the world and not for itself; Worship, which humbles and centers; Outreach, because the people care about others; Biblical Teaching, because the Bible points to the life, death, resurrection, and teachings of Christ; Community, lived together; and Tenacity, described simply as the Mt. Carmel way.
